Members of the North Carolina Air National Guard come together during a 1-mile walk/run to support family and friends of recently deceased U.S. Air Force Recruiter Master Sgt. Valanda Pettis. Master Sgt. Pettis’ battle with cancer came to an end this Fall and to honor her memory, the NCANG Recruiting office hosted the Color Run, which involves a 1-mile walk/run with colorful chalk thrown in the air and on participants, to inspire cheer in those she left behind. The theme of the race, “Livin’ my best life,” is a phrase Pettis was often heard singing or using around her loved ones to instill faith, joy, and love.

My concept for this bottle of hope was based upon the desire to give a bottle that illustrates being filled with love and hope, not empty. But how to decorate the outside of the bottle to allow for the hope inside to show through? This problem was solved by covering part of the bottle with translucent liquid polymer with inclusions of embossing powder, to create a translucent but colored layer. Part of the bottle was left naked, in the shape of a heart on 2 opposing sides, to create a window to see the inside clearly. The spiral lentil on the top of the lid is attached securely to the lid with a screw. And the "hope" that is inside consists of many tiny polymer hearts and spirals in glittery white. It was my original intention that the owner could make a wish on each heart and spiral, or share the tiny tokens with anyone she wants to give a little love or hope. The bottle is tiny, measuring in at 3" tall and about 1" wide at the widest point, the hearts and spirals inside the bottle are about 1/4" wide and 1/4" long. I've been posting dark shots, lately. Let's pick it up a bit!

This is from a recent client-shoot: Shannon Gerard, Toronto's most delightful comic and book artist (in my humble opinion) had an installation at CanZine (at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto) to promote her most recent project, called 'Boobs and Dinks."

I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but it's a wonderful and inspiring project: Shannon crochets little… well, bodyparts… and puts a little lump in them, and has also developed artists books that accompany these crocheted items. The books teach in plain and even fun, natural, casual and silly language, how to examine these parts in order to find the lump. It's a difficult project to describe, but very positive and preventative. it instructs, but it doesn't feel 'educational' in the annoying way that typical leaflets would.

I'm proud to have been involved in the project, even just in this post-development sort of a way! In this image, Shannon feverishly tries to finish crocheting finger-puppets for the event, before everything gets started.

For more information about the project, please visit www.shannongerard.org.
