COPA is proud to support this and the many other initiatives that work tirelessly to promote women’s involvement in all different aspects of the aviation industry. Each day during WOAW week, we are profiling a COPA member who is promoting aviation in her own area of the industry. Today’s WOAW member profile is Capt. Sarah Dallaire, of Quebec, who is a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force. We asked Capt. Dallaire about what inspired her to get involved in aviation, about her plans for the future, and how she sees COPA’s role in aviation:

The Griffon helicopter is used by the Army to spot hostile forces and quickly insert troops into tense situations. The aircraft also provides medical support and search and rescue capabilities to the Land Force. It is equipped with the latest navigation, GPS, thermal and "night vision" systems.

The 5th Canadian Division bid farewell to Brigadier-General Carl Turenne and welcomed a new Commander, Brigadier-General Derek A. Macaulay at a Change of Command ceremony presided over by the Commander of the Canadian Army, Lieutenant-General Paul Wynnyk at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site earlier today.
Thanks to Brigadier-General Carl Turenne for the leadership and guidance that he imparted on the soldiers that served for 5th Canadian Division during his two years in command.

This year they had a lot more hands-on/interactive displays, some of which made me feel a little unsettled, as children were playing with real guns and grenade launchers as if they were toys. That aside, the Canadian Forces did have some interesting military hardware on display and the rain made for some gritty photos.

Combat engineer searches the grounds for improvised explosive devices
A combat engineer attached to Oscar Company, 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group, prods a mud wall with his bayonet while searching the grounds near a Canadian forces leaguer in the Panjwa’i district for improvised explosive devices. Working under extreme heat and pressure, engineers work around the clock to clear dangerous routes and mitigate the dangers of improvised explosive devices.
In close cooperation with Afghan National Security Force, 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group provides security by conducting counter-insurgency operations throughout Panjwa’i district located south-west of Kandahar City. The Battle Group conducts partnered operations with the 2nd Kandak of the 1st Brigade, 205 Corps of the Afghan National army, Afghan National Police and the Panjwa’i district Governor in order to advance governance, reconstruction and security in the area.
Operation ATHENA is Canada’s participation in the International Security Assistance Forces in Afghanistan. Focused on Kandahar Province in southern Afghanistan since the fall of 2005, Op ATHENA has one over-arching objective: to leave Afghanistan to Afghans, in a country that is better governed, more peaceful and more secure.

Construction of Access Control Point
Combat Engineers from 5e Régiment Genie de Combat (5 RGC) pull supplies from a sea-can at the construction point for Access Control Point for the Afghan National Police (ANP) along Route Hyena.
Task Force Kandahar is engaged in a major road-building project in the Panjwa’i district of Afghanistan in order to improve mobility and increase quality of life for the area’s residents. The main road construction project in the Horn of Panjwa’i (HoP) consists of widening and improving Route HYENA, from Sperwan to Mushan. The existing dirt road is in extremely poor condition and the project will improve it into a paved, all-weather road that is eight meters wide and 18-kilometers long. This is a joint project using local labour, Afghan National Security Force (ANSF) and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) resources.
Operation ATHENA is Canada’s participation in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. The mission of Task Force Kandahar, the Canadian-led brigade in ISAF Regional Command (South), is to set the right conditions for sustainable progress in security, governance, development and peace in the districts of Panjwa'i, Dand and Daman in Kandahar Province, in conjunction with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Afghan national security forces, and other coalition and civilian partners.

L’opération Athena est le nom donné à la mission que le Canada mène au sein de la Force internationale d'assistance (FIAS) à la sécurité en Afghanistan. La mission de la Force opérationnelle – Kandahar, brigade dirigée par le Canada au sein du Commandement régional (Sud) de la FIAS, est d’établir des conditions propices à la sécurité, à la gouvernance, au développement et à la paix durables dans les districts de Panjwayi, de Dand et de Daman, dans la province de Kandahar, en collaboration avec le gouvernement de la République islamique d’Afghanistan, les Forces de sécurité nationale afghanes (FSNA) et d’autres partenaires civils et de la coalition.

Soldier scans the area for potential threats
Sergeant Derek Hopper, Reconnaissance Squadron, 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group, scans the area for potential threats during a recent task in the Panjwa’i District of Kandahar Province.
In close cooperation with Afghan National Security Forces, 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group provides security by conducting counter-insurgency operations throughout Panjwa’i District located south-west of Kandahar City. The Battle Group conducts partnered operations with the 2nd Kandak of the 1st Brigade, 205 Corps of the Afghan National army, Afghan National Police and the Panjwa’i District Governor in order to advance governance, reconstruction and security in the area.
Operation ATHENA is Canada’s participation in the International Security Assistance Forces in Afghanistan. Focused on Kandahar Province in southern Afghanistan since the fall of 2005, Op ATHENA has one over-arching objective: to leave Afghanistan to Afghans, in a country that is better governed, more peaceful and more secure.

CFB TRENTON, Ont. — The media was kept at a distance as soldiers said their emotional goodbyes to family and boarded planes to join in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).
Though the press was invited to cover the departure of 117 members of the Canadian Armed Forces bound for Kuwait early Thursday morning, journalists who arrived were strictly told not to photograph faces or talk to the soldiers.
The soldiers are part of Operation Impact, Canada's contribution to the coalition hitting ISIS with airstrikes to keep the terrorist army from furthering its violence in Iraq and Syria.
The members who left from the Ontario base Thursday will be responsible for setting up operations before the rest are flown over in coming weeks.
The Air Task Force will include six CF-18 Hornet fighter jets from 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alta., a C-150 Polaris aerial refueller from CFB Trenton, and two CP-140 Aurora surveillance aircraft from 14 Wing Greenwood, N.S., and about 600 personnel in total.
Capt. Julie Brunet, public affairs officer at CFB Trenton, said the "photo op" was organized by Defence Minister Bob Nicholson's office, and that she was unable to provide any information about the operation.
Brunet asked photographers to delete some of their photographs that showed a Pelican transport case with a destination sticker that read "Kuwait City, Kuwait" with Canadian Forces members lining up in the background, waiting for custom clearance.
"They saw you taking the photo and now they are very worried about it and asked if you could delete them with me here with you," said Brunet.

Lieutenant General Peter Devlin, Chief of the Land Staff and the Army Regimental Sergeant Major Chief Warrant Officer Giovanni Moretti visit the Canadian troops deployed to southern Afghanistan. They took that opportunity to highlight the work the Canadian Army has done, and to receive feedback from the troops.
Task Force Kandahar will continue robust security operations in conjunction with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Afghan National Security Forces, and its coalition and civilian partners in order to eliminate insurgent violence and set the conditions for successful and sustainable governance, development and peace in southern Afghanistan.

On August 27, 2018 Latvian Land Forces Mechanized Infantry brigade, National Guard 1st Riga brigade and Canadien led eFP battlegroup Latvia personnel conducted delay and defence operations in Vecumnieki region, Latvia during military exercise “Namejs 2018”. The opposing force was soldiers from Polish Armed Forces and Czech Armed Forces.

Within a cloud of dust created by the CH-147D Chinook Helicopter, Royale 22e Régiment, Charlie Company, soldiers move away from the Chinook as they are dropped at their starting position for OP CRAZY FLIGHT II.
Canadian Helicopter Force (Afghanistan), Task Force Freedom contributes to the overall effectiveness and security of OP CRAZY FLIGHT II by providing transportation and protection to ground forces. This aerial advantage allows ground forces to arrive faster, safer and confident with the knowledge that they have aerial support at a moment notice.
OP CRAZY FLIGHT II is the last operation for Royal 22e Régiment, Charlie Company before the Canadian Forces ends its mission in the Southern region of Afghanistan.
Operation ATHENA is Canada’s participation in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. The mission of Task Force Kandahar, the Canadian-led brigade in ISAF Regional Command (South), is to set the right conditions for sustainable progress in security, governance, development and peace in the districts of Panjwa'i, Dand and Daman in Kandahar Province, in conjunction with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Afghan national security forces, and other coalition and civilian partners.
