Calzone with mozzarella, Gouda cheese, tomatoes, basil
- A calzone is a folded pizza or turnover shaped like a half-moon and made of salted bread dough.
Sandwich-sized calzones are often sold at Italian lunch counters or by street vendors because they are easy to eat while standing or walking.
As a rule, calzones are usually stuffed with tomato and cheese(s) such as ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan, Provolone or a type of regional cheese.
The dough is folded into a half-moon shape then sealed with an egg wash mixture, or formed into a spherical shape and baked or fried.
After cooking, calzones might (depending on region) be served with marinara sauce or topped with a combination of garlic, olive oil, and parsley.

Een calzone is een soort dubbelgevouwen pizza, gevuld met tomaat, mozzarella en diverse andere ingrediënten.
Gefühlt ist sie doppelt so groß wie man sie kennt. Der Teig ist dünn, aber nicht hart .. und sie ist oberlecker! Ich war am nächsten Abend noch einmal dort und habe nochmal eine Calzone gegessen .. jetzt zeigt meine Waage 2 Kilo mehr .. 😜👍
It feels like it's twice as big as you know it. The dough is thin, but not hard... and it's delicious! I was there again the next evening and ate another calzone.. now my scales show 2 kilos more.. 😜👍
