Day 168 of 365 (Year Three)

I learned my last technique in class today which puts me well on my way to testing for my orange belt. Considering how long it took before I was able to test for my yellow, this seems awful fast, but considering that I started knowing nothing and that I now pick them up a lot faster I guess it isn't all that fast. I still have work to do on almost all of the techniques polishing them off, but I know them and they are getting smoother every day.

Before I test I still have to learn my kicking set, but I've got my first two walls down pat and the third wall is coming along nicely. The next test date is in July and I think I'll be ready. Now I just have to hope my instructors feel the same. I'm not too worried about that though. They haven't come right out and said it, but I get the sense from them that they are on board with it. I think the effort and extra time I spend in the studio is noticed and appreciated. Even on non-class days I am there with Savanah for her class. While she is in class I am in the back studio practicing so hopefully next month I'll be able to shoot this with an orange belt.

I'm so amazed and proud California Living Museum has used some of my photos on their new signs. The photo on the left is one of mine.

Grandpa Marshall and his napping skills are just what the dogs ordered. They gravitate towards calm people. "Oh, you're sitting down? I think I will join you." It's cute to see our matching pair fall asleep near each other.

“According to Buddhism, our individual mind plays a very important role in

our day-to-day lives.

That means we can be much happier if our minds are calm, positive,

and undisturbed by negative thoughts and emotional feelings. We will be very unhappy and gloomy if our mental state is negative, unwholesome and disturbed.

So, it’s very important for us to cultivate the calm and wholesome state of mind and attitude so that we are able to live happily.

For example, if your mind is in a calm and wholesome state, you will find good taste

in ordinary water.

But if your mind is disturbed you will not even find good taste in champagne!

This is very clear for everybody, in the same way, all our pleasant experiences and unpleasant experiences depend on our state of mind.

So, now there is a reason for us to cultivate a calm and wholesome state of mind in our lives.

We cannot expect something simply to bring us happiness without cultivating happiness within ourselves”.

“The State of Mind” (transcript of a teaching given August 29, 1997 by Geshe Dakpa Topgyal)

Two monks were sitting next to each other on the stairs of the Tibetan temple located in Sarnath where I usualy come on Sundays when I need calmness and tranquility.

They were reading and chanting mantras, it was such a peaceful moment that I could almost feel the sound of silence.

It was at sunset, I was leaving the temple.

I took a few shots trying not to disturb them, the only noise was the click of my camera.

“Keep Calm- Drink Beer” is a word play on the adage often repeated by Sir Winston Churchill during the height of World War II: “Keep Calm and Bugger On”."Keep Calm- Drink Beer” is an adage that is perhaps viewed a lot like typical public reactions to a politician. It may resonate with some and repulse others. Churchill is a favorite historical figure of mine and I enjoy books and movies about his celebrated life. I think Sir Winston would have liked this word play on his adage.

This calm is not a small thing.

It is the deep, still water

that reflects the moon without distortion.

It is the strength that will allow you to hold

the world's chaos without spilling.

There's something about a Hydrangea for me that offers a welcoming calm. I rarely can walk by one without slowing my stride or stopping all together so that I can spend a few moments lingering as I study their blossoms. These blossoms just beckoned me to get out the camera. And so I did. In the post processing I added just a bit of purple to this to accentuate the white a bit more.

I've never been there early before, without the crowds. Normally the cafe is packed with people talking, but today we were in before twelve and had the back of the cafe to ourselves for a few minutes. The room had very pleasant areas of light and shade.

Nature’s symmetry reminds us of life’s quiet rhythm—calm waters reflecting steadfast trees, a tranquil balance between growth and stillness. A gentle reminder to pause and marvel at the beauty around us.
