The history of calligraphy in Iran dates back to the pre Islam era. In Zoroastrianism beautiful and clear writings were always praised. [1]
Around one thousand years ago, Ebne Moghleh Beyzavi Shirazi (in Persian: ابن مقله بيضاوی شيرازی) and his brother invented six genres of Iranian calligraphy namely "Tahqiq", "Reyhan", "Sols", "Naskh" and "Toqih" and "Reqah". These genres were common for four centuries in Persia. In 7th century (Hijri calendar), a new genre of Persian calligraphy was invented and named "Ta'liq".
Morteza Gholi Khan Shamlou and Mohammad Shafi Heravi invented a new genre called "Shekasteh Nastaliq". Abdol-Majid Taleqani brought this genre to its highest level.

Calligraphy Art and Art Studio Apps
Freehand from a photo of Bonnard's painting.
A few hours.
Still intent on studio housecleaning, a mostly black and white book on Elsworth Kelly went straight into the donations bag without hesitation.
Next in hand, a book on Bonnard, published in the 1960s, and inherited from my mother. It too has lots of black and white but a sufficient color plates section to warrant keeping unless/until I acquire a better Bonnard book. I do love his paintings.
I started this piece in the morning using the Calligraphy Art app and was really enjoying it. Until it crashed on me and I lost some work. Although I had saved a little while before the crash, there's no way to import an image back into Calligraphy Art so I had to finish it in the evening a different way.
I looked in Brushes, Sketchbook Pro & Art Studio, and Art Studio most easily enabled me to make a sort of chisel pen to emulate the marks made in Calligraphy Art, so that's where I finished it.
As I also wanted to stick to the limited palette of Calligraphy Art, I made a page of color swatches, and imported that into Art Studio. I selected only colors from the swatches, and used only the chisel pen. I can tell which part is which but I hope it's not obvious to anyone else.

Because Islamic leaders saw in figural arts a possible implication of idolatry, Islam's early theocracy looked to the artistry of calligraphy for religious expression. In Islamic and Arabic cultures, calligraphy became highly respected as an art -- the art of writing.
The Qur'an, played a central role in the development and evolution of Arabic script, and by extension, calligraphy. Today, calligraphy has become the most revered art form in the Islamic world because it links the literary heritage of the Arabic language with the religion of Islam. The result is an artistic tradition of extraordinary beauty, richness and power.
Calligraphy is an extremely demanding activity, and most of the great Muslim masters devoted their lives to perfecting their art. Mastery of calligraphy requires not only the discipline of developing technical skill, but also the engagement of the calligrapher's moral force and personality.
The scope of Arabic calligraphy is vast and diffuse. What I am presenting is merely a sample of the aesthetic, cultural, and scholarly wealth available.

Copperplate flows - it's a lovely style to write. The technique is different to other calligraphy styles, the tools are different, but with practice Copperplate is a lovely style for wedding invitation calligraphy and addressing envelopes etc.

"Calligraphy (from Greek κάλλος kallos "beauty" + γραφή graphẽ "writing") is a type of visual art related to writing.
Islamic calligraphy (calligraphy in Arabic is Khatt ul-Yad خط اليد) has evolved alongside the religion of Islam and the Arabic language. As it is based on Arabic letters, some call it "Arabic calligraphy". However the term "Islamic calligraphy" is a more appropriate term as it comprises all works of calligraphy by the Muslim calligraphers from Morocco to China.
Islamic calligraphy is associated with geometric Islamic art (arabesque) on the walls and ceilings of mosques as well as on the page. Contemporary artists in the Islamic world draw on the heritage of calligraphy to use calligraphic inscriptions or abstractions.
Instead of recalling something related to the spoken word, calligraphy for Muslims is a visible expression of the highest art of all, the art of the spiritual world. Calligraphy has arguably become the most venerated form of Islamic art because it provides a link between the languages of the Muslims with the religion of Islam. The holy book of Islam, al-Qur'an, has played an important role in the development and evolution of the Arabic language, and by extension, calligraphy in the Arabic alphabet. Proverbs and passages from the Qur'an are still sources for Islamic calligraphy.
It is generally accepted that Islamic calligraphy excelled during the Ottoman era. Turkish calligraphers still present the most refined and creative works. Istanbul is an open exhibition hall for all kinds and varieties of calligraphy, from inscriptions in mosques to fountains, schools, houses, etc."
