I recently discovered my love for calla lilies and frankly I think they deserve their own album.

Calla lilies always evoke, for me anyway, thoughts of Georgia O’Keefe, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo and Luther Burbank. Besides the delicate white whorl of a blossom there is the overall grace of a white flower. I pay tribute here to all those who came before me in their appreciation of callas.

I normally only publish flower photos with a natural backgroud. This time I thought I'd try out my photoshop skills and add a plain backgroup. I think probably though I will continue to go for the natural background in future though your specific comments about this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Another lighting variation while trying for a different look. I was looking for backlighting to make the flower look translucent, and put an SB600 in a snoot behind and underneath the flowers, and another SB600 in a softbox front left to provide some fill light. Both strobes triggered by the pop up flash on my D90 in commander mode. Strobes were in manual mode and I adjusted output until I got a look that I liked. This stuff is fun to play with and has a great effect on how the subjects look.

Other plants and flowers that I've photographed using strobes can be seen in my Strobe Lit Plant set. In the description, I list resources that I've used to learn how to light with off camera flash. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157628079460544/...

More pictures from the Calla Lily series can be seen, logically enough, in my Calla Lily set.

Celebrating the first day of spring!

This is a new flowers that's just opening on the plant that I've been photographing for the last week or so.

I lit this very simply by placing a YN560-II in a softbox behind the flower so that the light was primarily backlighting. The flash in manual mode was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603 radio trigger.

any photo of calla lilies is cliche, right?? or does it have to be black/white??

I just finished a massive upload of pictures, mostly from a trip to Monterey a few weeks ago. Probably won't be adding anything new in the next two weeks, since I'll be in INDIA!!! :)
