Giant white Arum Lily (Zantedeschia Aethiopica)

She Who Must be Obeyed has made a jolly good job of growing the old Calla Lily’s this year! Splendid display, you know, good form. We’re off to the withdrawing room for a large Pimms, Pip Pip!

"When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it is your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else." ~ Georgia O'Keeffe

For You!

Calla lilies always evoke, for me anyway, thoughts of Georgia O’Keefe, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo and Luther Burbank. Besides the delicate white whorl of a blossom there is the overall grace of a white flower. I pay tribute here to all those who came before me in their appreciation of callas.

Calla palustris

Cala lily at a friend's house

Arum d’Etiopia:

Arum d’Etiopia ,calla:

once, give the calla meant having respect and esteem for the person to whom you gave, it was also considered a sign of strong friendship.

Today, give a woman a bouquet of calla lilies, means express appreciation for its beauty.

The callas are widely used as cut flowers in ceremonies as a symbol of purity, innocence, sincerity.

In the language of flowers can also mean modesty.

A flower with many meanings, beautiful, elegant and durable, just like that at all!

Flower haters (you know who you are...!) be warned... I'm going to get as much mileage as I possibly can out of these calla lilies while they are handy!

ODC - Handy (a bit of a stretch, but true... they are handy, after all )

Seen at Longwood Gardens, Pennsylvania

Kind of fun to make...the rainfall is diffused by an overhead screen making the drops finer and more difficult to capture in the low light, necessitating throwing the Calla Lily out of focus even more.

White Calla Lilly

Sweet 16 hot pink calla lillies with black and white accents for a girl named...Lily! :)

Calla Lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) in the early morning dew. Almost approximates the golden mean in nature.

When I started I thought I was going to paint white flowers...

But while I gazed the calyxes of these graceful callas, at a certain point I began to see colored shadows and unexpected shades in their white...

In the white callas I found

a pure cobalt blue

an orange pink

an iridescent gray

a greenish ochre

a merely hinted mauve...

... how many other colors are hidden inside white?

Calla Lilies are very popular for wedding bouquets as they signify magnificence and beauty.

More info

I went to the grocery store on the way home tonight. Needed some new subjects for photos. It was such a gray day this morning and it was dark when I left work. So I got some new flowers. The tag says it is a Calla Lily

I never would have appreciated what a work of art these flowers are if I didn't have a camera that day when walking by a garden.
