12 Moves

Video stills from SDNA's film “The story of Robert Fletcher” commissioned by Dancefest for 12 Moves. The film unfolds the story of an obsessive Victorian Collector who finds and traps six magical water creatures. These Creaturae Aquae cast a spell on Worcestershire’s inhabitants. Only a dance routine performed by a very large number of people has the power to release the water creatures and bring happiness back to the county.

The film contains the work of hundreds of Worcestershire dancers.

12 Moves has been the biggest dance project to have ever taken place in Worcershire, touching the lives of thousands of people. From community classes to spectacular outdoor events, 12 Moves got Worcestershire dancing!

SDNA were appointed as Artistic Directors of 12 Moves, to bring a fresh digital perspective to this ambitious dance project.

Over 6400 people have witnessed 12 Moves events, and nearly 4000 people have participated in activities that included guerilla projections, flash mobs, interactive installations, shop window performances and a large scale outdoor event.

12 moves creative team included composer Mira Calix (Warp Records), choreographer Jennifer Irons (ironINC Dance), code master Evan Raskob, dramaturg Stephen Wilson and costume designer Julia Kalache.

Beyond the Deepening Shadow: The Tower Remembers

(4-11 November 2018)

As the nation commemorates the centenary of the end of the First World War, a new installation at the Tower of London, Beyond the Deepening Shadow: The Tower Remembers will fill the moat with thousands of individual flames: a public act of remembrance for the lives of the fallen, honouring their sacrifice.

Beyond the Deepening Shadow is an evolving installation, which will unfold each evening over the course of four hours, between 17:00 and 21:00 each evening, with the Tower moat gradually illuminated by individual flames.

The unfolding visual spectacle will be accompanied by a specially-commissioned sound installation; a sonic exploration of the shifting tide of political alliances, friendship, love and loss in war.

At the centre of the sound installation lies a new choral work, 'One lighted look for me' by Sound Artist Mira Calix with words from War Poet Mary Borden’s Sonnets to a Soldier.

[Historic Royal Palaces]

"Chorus" art installation by United Visual Artists in the newly restored Howard Assembly Room at Leeds Grand Theatre. A couple of local flickr-ers were invited to come along to the preview evening to take some photos.

Suspended from the ceiling are 8 light-emitting pendulums that swing from side to side in various patterns to an ethereal soundtrack by Mira Calix.

The assembly room itself is newly renovated and opened to the public as an art space, as part of the multi-million renovation of the Leeds Grand Theatre.

For this photo i wanted to demonstrate that Chorus was as much about the sound as it was the visuals, so asked the amazingly patient stripey anne to pose as if she was cupping her ear to hear it. Used a bit of fill-in flash so actually looks a lot lighter in there than in reality - took ages to get the focus right!

Chorus runs from 6th to 28th February, Monday to Saturday and is free :-)

Calix Solutions Director Juan Vela prepares to speak on Next Generation Access Network Technologies.

I’m Reina Isabal Calix, I’m a survivor of the massacre of Santa Clara and Horcones. The massacre happened on the 25 June 1975. There was a plan by landowners and military, Coronel Chinchilla. They confused work for the common good with work for communism. We were working for the common good. They prepared to crush us. We were a group of religious people, priests, farmers, women. We were struggling for agrarian reform. All we really wanted was for people to have enough land to plant food for themselves, to have their daily bread, for their children and families. We were united, teachers, poor farmers, young people, students, workers, priests. It was a big struggle, but they wanted to crush it.

There was a Colombian priest here called Ivan Betancourt. There was also an American priest called Casimiro Zypher. They were both killed too, along with the campesinos and students.

At that time, speaking about the common good, was like promoting communism. There was a plan, to destroy everything we were doing and slow down the agrarian reform.

We had a shop, radiofonica school, they killed the person who ran it. We used to train carpenters and mechanics here.

We planned a march, 5000 people came. They couldn’t stop it. But, the soldiers came in here using students as a cover, it was a trick. Three people died right here, in the centre.

Others were taken to the prison. Father Casimiro died being tortured during interrogation. Later they took them to a farm, and most were killed there, they threw the bodies down a well. Fourteen people were killed.

If an angel can fall, can a demon ascend?

The Port of Caen is the harbour and port authority of the Norman city of Caen, France.

The port of Caen is composed of a series of basins on the Canal de Caen à la Mer, linking Caen to Ouistreham, 15 km (9.3 m) downstream, on the English Channel.

The Viaduc de Calix, a large concrete viaduct, passes over the Orne valley and the canal. It has been built high enough to permit the transit of large tonnage ships.

The Bassin de Calix, directly below the viaduct is the only basin in regular use. Several cranes are used to load and unload cargo, mostly wood, onto lorries or trains.

César Abraham Méndez Calix, 31, Jutiquiles

We’ve seen people leaving Syria, going through France, thousands of them. We never thought we’d see thousands of people leaving Honduras at the same time. But, if you all go together, you don’t pay smugglers, and it’s safer.

I lived in a really dangerous neighbourhood. Really dangerous. Lots of my friends were killed.

The first three times I got up to Laredo.

Then I went on the train, on top of the train, up to Mexicali.

All in all, I went six times, I was deported five times.

The last time, the people I was with got impatient, they tried to get across, they were deported. I got homesick, I decided to come back here, to eat beans.

But, it’s hard here, economically.

I was lucky to survive it, I saw someone killed in front of me, I was with this guy from Choluteca, we were tired, it was six in the morning, we hadn’t slept much, we were perched in between the train wagons, he slipped off and went straight under the wheels. God knows how many people have died on the journey, and plenty come back with limbs missing. Another time I saw someone reach out for a mango from an overhanging tree, the train will full, 60 people on each wagon, we were hungry, so he reached out, he slipped, he went between the wagons, landed on his teeth, he was dead straight away.

One time I nearly died myself. I was travelling between Nayarit and Guadalajara. I was on the train and I touched a high-tension cable, it just brushed my face, burned me, two Mexicans stopped me from falling off, they grabbed my legs. I’ve never been closer to death. I have never got on a train again.

Sometimes the Mexican throw stones at you while you’re on the train.

I have done training with the LWF, I am making a living painting, painting houses and businesses, and doing signwriting and tattoos.

LWF’s program for returned and deported migrants is supported by ELCA.
