Inorganic Calix by KingK

Edit: Eh, probably going to adjust the color layering

Hey guys, if you've been keeping up on my DA, you know I've been doing a lot of 3D modeling lately. And I thought it was about time I get some of those for myself (and my friend Llortor). From left to right:

Kanohi Kihore. This mask was a commission from Llortor and probably the most complicated design I've done yet. I love how it turned out though (seriously, click that link to check out the render). The mask was designed to be more titan-scale like the Olmak, but as I was getting ready to photograph I thought it would be funny to have it on a little Tiki Matoran :P

Eltanin's Kanohi Pakari. Another project for Llortor that I've been working on for a while. Finally, I got that G2 connection worked out.

Mask of Mutation. Another commission from BrianK2355 that I had a lot of fun doing. The mask was designed like the Kanohi Kraahkan with two faces, and I just had to try the top face as a replacement for Virse's Zesk helmet.

Inorganic Kanohi Calix. With any luck, you'll be seeing more of this mask soon. The red one was purely for tradition's sake, but the green is intended for Onuku's teammate Boju. For now, Toa Kaon was a good stand in.

Custom Bionicle Lower Leg, by Exota Forge. This is the only design here that isn't mine, but that of an awesome designer I really look up to. You guys should all go check him out on Shapeways or DA. The design seemed a good replacement for the Piraka shins that I always thought were too bulky for Kopen.

Nelson was my pal in FDR HS. We were in Graphic Arts Printing shop all 4 years. We were part of the school photographer team. Pompillio is his cousin. The had a band named "Lempira" All of their family was from Honduras. Nelson and I would go to KISS, Black Sabbath, RUSH and Led Zeppelin concerts along with his brother Milton. When Nelson often visited me when my father happen to be there, they both spoke Spanish. I do not speak Spanish. [My father lived in Argentina for 15 years] I just found Nelson's brother Milton on facebook! I have not seen them since 1983! I dunno how I missed these two last year, but I won't make the same mistake again! Happy birthday to The Mugbearer and DA's Scorpion-Strike, two of the coolest artists in the community. On the left we have Calix, a never before seen OC of Mug's that for some reason I fixated on and prodded at until I got enough detail to finish him. Mug probably thought I was crazy. :P Calix is a Techpriest in the project Technorealm.

And on the right, Toa Scorzen, Scorp's self-MOC and the origin of Freya's Kanohi Crast. I just love the contrast his technical red color scheme makes against the smooth cloak of Calix.

"Hic est enim calix sanguinis mei..." 'For this is the chalice of my blood'. Legend has it that Joseph of Arimathea, who buried Christ, brought the Holy Grail - the chalice which the Lord Jesus used at the Last Supper - to Glastonbury. This stained glass, which survives in the parish church of Glastonbury, but which is from its ancient and famed abbey, shows an angel holding that Holy Grail.

But the chalice itself is only considered precious because of what it once held - the blood of Jesus Christ. If so, then the Holy Grail is found in every Catholic church, for Christ is present in the Eucharist, and gives us his precious Body and Blood. This mystery is celebrated on Corpus Christi, which is today (14 June 2009) in England & Wales.

12 Moves

Photographs from the Victorian Collection we discovered at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum. The collection features in SDNA's film “The story of Robert Fletcher” commissioned by Dancefest for 12 Moves. The film unfolds the story of an obsessive Victorian Collector who finds and traps six magical water creatures. These Creaturae Aquae cast a spell on Worcestershire’s inhabitants. Only a dance routine performed by a very large number of people has the power to release the water creatures and bring happiness back to the county.

The film contains the work of hundreds of Worcestershire dancers.

12 Moves has been the biggest dance project to have ever taken place in Worcershire, touching the lives of thousands of people. From community classes to spectacular outdoor events, 12 Moves got Worcestershire dancing!

SDNA were appointed as Artistic Directors of 12 Moves, to bring a fresh digital perspective to this ambitious dance project.

Over 6400 people have witnessed 12 Moves events, and nearly 4000 people have participated in activities that included guerilla projections, flash mobs, interactive installations, shop window performances and a large scale outdoor event.

12 moves creative team included composer Mira Calix (Warp Records), choreographer Jennifer Irons (ironINC Dance), code master Evan Raskob, dramaturg Stephen Wilson and costume designer Julia Kalache.

12 was commissioned by Dancefest as part of London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

The ancient Roman calix was a drinking vessel consisting of a bowl fixed atop a stand and was in common use at banquets. A chalice (from the Latin calyx) is a standing cup used to hold sacramental wine during the Mass and was intended for drinking watered wine during the ceremony of the Eucharist (also called the Lord's Supper or Holy Communion).

Chalices have been used since the beginning of the Christian church. Because of Jesus' command to his disciples to "Do this in remembrance of me." the celebration of the Eucharist became central to Christian liturgy. Since the wine was supposed to be transformed into the blood of Christ, naturally, the vessels used in this important act of worship were treated with great respect. Until Vatican II, it was even considered sacrilegious for laymen to even touch a chalice, what more with his bare hands!

In Western Christianity, chalices often have a pommel or node where the stem meets the cup to make the elevation easier and to prevent the cup from slipping. In Roman Catholicism, chalices tend to be tulip-shaped, and the cups are quite narrow. Catholic priests will often receive chalices from their families upon their ordination into the priesthood.

Often highly decorated, chalices in the colonial period were often made of precious metal and even enameled and jeweled. If funds were short, religious tradition required that the inside of the cup at least be plated with gold.

This silver-gilt chalice has a circular base,an urn-shaped knopf and surfaces embossed and chased with acanthus leaves that are delicately shaded with fine parallel lines. The large leaves on the base are interspersed with sixoval reserves chased with signs of the passion. Both the leaves and the reserves are bordered with fine beading.

The base of the cup is embossed and chased with four oval reserves surrounded by concave molding and containing signs of the Passion. Each reserve alternates with a bunch of grapes with leaves and tendrils. A border of finely line-shaded leaves running above the vines and reserves is topped by a circlet of tiny beads, called rosario de perlas in contemporary inventories. This decorative detail is painstakingly laborious, as each bead is formed and filed individually from a square silver wire welded into a ring. The fact that the beads are uniform in shape shows the great skill of the silversmith who created the pieces.

A ciborium is a metal vessel that was originally a particular shape of drinking cup in ancient Greece and Rome. Later, the word was used to refer to a large covered cup designed to hold and store the consecrated hosts of the sacrament of Holy Communion. It resembles the shape of a chalice, but its bowl is more round than conical and is surmounted by a cross or other sacred design. Because it is used to hold the ‘Body of Christ’, as the consecrated host is believed to be, the ciborium was typically made, or at least plated, in a precious metal.

This particular ciborium has a simple circular base and is decorated with chased foliate and floral patterns on a stippled ground. The base is edged with a chased gadroon border and decorated on the upper portion with a repetitive design of single bloom alternating with a foliated shield. Rows of chased acanthus leaves decorate the lower part of the stem and the bun-shaped knopf, the latter placed between a pair of spindles chased with a beaded collar. The rounded bowl of the ciborium and its cover are plain. The latter was originally surmounted with a cross that is now missing.

This particular chalice is ‘dorado afuego’ or fire-gilded, a process wherein pure gold is combined with mercury to form a paste which is then painted over the surface to be gilded. When the object is baked, the mercury oozes out leaving a coating of pure gold on the surface. The process is highly toxic due to the mercury fumes exuded and is seldom used today. Nowadays, an object gilded in this manner is called vermeil.

Background info:

The village, whose original name was just Sainte-Theodosie, changed its name to Sainte Theodosie Calixa Lavallée in honour of of the musician that was born in this village that went on to compose the music to Canadas' national anthem,Oh Canada.

The lyrics were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier who was born in May 8, 1839 in Saint-Placide,Quebec.He studied at the University of Laval, and was a distinguished lawyer in Kamouraska.

He was appointed judge of the Quebec Superior Court in 1873, and later became Chief Justice of Quebec from 1904 until his retirement in 1906.

He was probably better known as a poet than as a judge, and it was natural that the Honourable Théodore Robitaille, Lieutenant Governor of Quebec, should turn to him to write the words of an hymn for the great "Congrès national des Canadiens-Français" in 1880. His poem "O Canada!" was widely praised on its first presentation.

Sir Adolphe was made a knight of the The Most Honourable Order of the Bath in 1911. He was a founding member of the Royal Society of Canada, and was president of that society from 1914-1915.
