AI Overview

The image features a Delahaye 135, a classic French luxury and racing car.

Model History:

The Delahaye 135, also known as the "Coupe des Alpes" after its success in the Alpine Rally, was first introduced in 1935. A modified version, the 135M, was released a year later with a more powerful engine.

Racing Success:

The Type 135 gained significant fame for its achievements in motorsports, including winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1937 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1938.

Design and Features:

The 135 was available in various body styles, including open and closed versions, and also as a rolling chassis for custom coachbuilders. Notable features on some models included patented designs by Figoni & Falaschi, such as the front fender design, ultralight tubular seats, disappearing soft tops, and windscreens that could recede into the body.

Post-War Challenges:

Despite its pre-war success, Delahaye faced financial difficulties after World War II due to a heavy French government tax on large displacement engines and the high costs associated with custom coachwork.

Legacy:

The Delahaye 135 remains a significant example of post-war French luxury and automotive design, often featured in concours d'elegance and vintage touring events.

Oh, this car is white all right.

White paint, a white ragtop, white hubcaps . . . must be the California look! :-) And to think, this car has Pennsylvania plates.

This is a 1990 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet - marketed as just the Cabriolet in North America - featuring a 1.8-liter inline four with just 94 horses. It remained popular after the Mark 1 Golf/Rabbit on which it was based was replaced by the second-generation Golf, and given the success of the Mark 2, I think it was a mistake for VW not to make a convertible based on that car. Fiat and Talbot had introduced new compact convertibles in Europe in the early eighties, and Ford soon followed up with a European Escort convertible (which, sadly, was never offered in North America). Automotive journalists expected Volkswagen to respond with a Mark 2 Golf convertible, but that never happened.

Oh, well, the old Golf convertible still sold well, As usual, the majority of American customers were women.

I'm not sure that the big plastic bumpers do the old Mk1 shape any favours.

Sadly I haven't been able to get a photo of any Mk1 hatchbacks yet. I did catch sight of one yesterday outside a garage, but wasn't able to stop.

One of the very first lots of Matchbox I bought as a child and kept in mint and boxed condition was a blue Ford Escort XR3i Cabriolet very much like this, sadly it was also one of the first I stupidly sold on Ebay many years ago! :-(

Thanks once again to my Fairy Diecast Angel Mikaela I know have one again in my collection. A few chips here and there on account of it being a charity shop rescue but that gleaming dark blue paint colour is still very much intact and instantly reminds me of why I bought one back in the late 1980's.

A great and inspiring model for Matchbox to make back then due to the popularity of the real vehicle in an era when FORD badged vehicles still had a lot of kudos in areas of the market it wouldn't now. Very well cast with ESCORT branding at the rear and clear lense lights up front.

PEUGEOT 205 Cabriolet
