Cuban School Students (4)
Cuban school children wear a simple, but standardized school uniform. The uniform varies by school level. Kindergarten children wear a white top, blue bottom, and blue scarf. Primary children wear a white top, red bottom, and red scarf. The secondary school uniform is a white top and yellow bottom.
We traveled to Cuba to see what could very well be the last episode of a true Marxist-Leninist socialist state, ruled by The People, and by Fidel of course. Che Guevara is still a big hero here but he'd turn over in his grave if he knew that already a 'second economy' is emerging in Cuba. Many Cubans are equal but a growing number is 'more equal'. Orwell had a point.
Anyway, Cuba was -and still is- an interesting experiment, so much more cheerful than communist Eastern Europe was before The Wall came down. But Cuba is just as poor and broken down...
It's also very pretty.

As Cubans head out to the beach to escape the summer heat of crowded cities, many are making the drive in relics from another era.
Tens of thousands of vintage American cars remain scattered throughout the country, manufactured before the revolution and subsequent US embargo in 1960. In the summers and at classic car shows, the old American models end up on display.
With no automobile imports coming in, the cars are preserved by Cuban mechanics and improvised fixes by the owners themselves.

Cuban children today begin to box at 8 or 10 years of age. There’s no time to lose—there are many competitors in an island filled with boxers. If you don’t start to train at an early age, you’ll never get to be a champ. Also, Cubans are famous for their skills in all combat sports. A chain of gyms throughout the country give young boys the chance to practice boxing under all requisite rules and regulations as well as safety measures. “Sport is the right of the people” is the slogan of the National Institute of Sport, Physical Education and Recreation.
