South Shore's pair of ex-Iowa Interstate SD38-2's approach the Dearborn Ave crossing in Hammond, IN with the Belt Job, AF-4.
October 9, 2020
I’m going to take a day off from posting my NS 911 shots. So here is the pair of ex Iowa Interstate SD38’s that now belong to the CSS are seen here leading the Belt Job back to Burnham Yard. They are seen here just South of Chicago as they pass the Kensington Tower. This was my first bagging the CSS SD38’s and first time shooting the tower.

Built in 1913 in Newcastle upon Tyne. A Canadian survey ship that served in both World Wars and survived the Halifax explosion. She surveyed the waters of Canada's Arctic and the coast of Newfoundland and was also used as a patrol and training vessel. Now permanently docked in Halifax Harbour next to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.
Working with a three man crew, the AF4 heads back north after working multiple industries including Kingsbury, Pigfeed, and interchange with the CN at Stillwell. Here the Chicago South Shore Kingsbury local is seen passing by the pond in La Porte as the sun begins to set. Big thanks to the conductor on the job for giving us a run down of the day's work.

CSS train AF2 just came through the drawbridge on Amtrak's Michigan line. The CSS works a couple industries on this side of the river. It was another frigid day in the Midwest. I woke up to -12 degrees, drove the 2 1/4 hours to Michigan City to chase the CSS down the Kingsbury line. When I arrived, I received the disappointing news that they were not running down there today. But found out the AF2 job was waiting near Drawbridge for Amtrak to go by. Thanks to KV for the tip.
The theme of my weekend was MOODLE and INTRO to CSS. Saturday am woke up at 4am burning with the desire to record my top ten tips for new edna Groups users. Shared it in the edna Group Owners forum and will work up a blog post soon.
Saturday night watched a great series of how to videos from the Moodleman himself Julian Ridden on how to create a Moodle template.
Tonight, I dug in and gave it a go. This is NOT the finished product, it's where I had to stop for tonight. I had a fantastic time learning and love, love, love Firebug, Dreamweaver, Filezilla and Gimp in concert. Also LOVE Colour Picker. (Yes I know Dreamweaver can FTP, no I haven't set it up yet cuz I was impatient.)
DOM = document object model (everything on a single web page *document* everything on that page is an object. Colour picker can spit back a palette of a web.
It seems I blew off the caption yesterday. So this is an eastbound passing the NKP milepost that says it's 17 miles from Chicago - probably LaSalle Street Station as that is where the Nickel Plate passenger trains arrived and departed. I think the other side was "BUF 506" or close to that on the mileage to Buffalo. In the background on the right, the Pennsy's "Burnham Tower" marks the crossing with their "SC&S" secondary line that connected the mainline to Pittsburgh with the mainline to Indianapolis. Two GP35's and two GP30's, probably original N&W (with high short hoods), and a few reefers on the head end, mean this is probably the "CB12" from Chicago to Buffalo, a longtime high priority freight that dates back well into NKP days. This was my second visit to Hegewisch (as my older friend and guide called it), named after the nearest station on the South Shore from which we had to walk to this crossing. The current CSS&SB station is situated right at the former PRR crossing. At our first visit there were abundant locos in Nickel Plate and Wabash paint, barely renumbered by N&W. I was thrilled, as this 14-year-old was convinced that the Nickel Plate was very cool. Alas no Nickel Plate units in their expired (since 1964) paint scheme, BUT....

Seeing a South Shore 800 was always a treat for me. The CSS&SB's version of the Little Joe was massive, powerful, and sleek. It didn't make any difference if it was moving or standing still, the 800's were hard to beat.
South Shore's SD38-2 pair was in charge of an afternoon belt job I accidentally stumbled upon while leaving Michigan City. There was hardly a cloud in the sky back east, but after chasing them west some 20 miles a wave of rain moved in making me loose motivation in Gary.

A set of South Shore Freight GP38-2's ease around the "city track" from Kirk Yard to head back east to CSS trackage at Curtis. This shot just off of Clark Road sure makes the area look like a complete wasteland.

A South Shore trainman is seen in the rear vestibule of a disabled southbound train on the ICG at 95th Street, in July 1983.. An air brake pipe on the lead coach blew out, putting the train into emergency braking. I helped the motorman find some pieces of wood from old ties that we wrapped in a rag and then he pounded same into the hole with his wrench. Our makeshift repair filled the hole and he was able to recover the air and resume their journey to Michigan City. The Rock Island / C&WI and BRC bridges are seen behind.
I REALLY wanted the pond shot south of LaPorte and after a cloudless dawn was rudely interrupted by low level condensation clouds pushing off of Lake Michigan I was pretty sure I wasn't going to get it.
With help from Mike I knew they had work to do at LaPorte so I set up for a smoker of them going over the diamond with the NYC and hot annihilated by a last second cloud. Once I was south of the Central I started running hot and got this and a couple others.
