The E9 Model BMW 3.0 CSL was built as a homologation special to allow the cars to be raced in the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC). The 'L' part meant Leicht, as in light-weight. Just 1265 were made. Toine Hezemans won the ETCC in 1973 driving a 3.0 CSL, and the car won the title again in each year from 1975 to 1979.
