Chicago Surface Lines "Matchbox" 1374 (St Louis 1905 order 715) @Illinois Railway Museum 7-4-89
The Matchboxes were too small for even the lighter lines in Chicago. As more of the lighter lines were converted to bus and as the PCC's made larger cars more available, the y were gone from revenue service by the CTA takeover. 1374 survived by being converted to a salt car to de-ice the streets in winter. This is a good restoration job.

Despite their cheap flimsy construction its amazing just how frequently old Summer models appear at charity shops and car boot sales, often in almost untouched condition such as this BMW 3.0 CSL. I can only imagine they were made in truly vast quantities, I certainly remember the brand dominating the budget diecast market when I was growing up.
A recent charity shop found gift.

CTA "Green Hornet" postwar PCC 4391 (St Louis 1948 order 1662) @ Illinois Railway Museum, Union IL 7-4-92
Unlike the prewar "Blue Geese", the postwar PCC cars were built as Pay As You Enter cars as were most of Chicago's two-man cars. One boarded the car through the triple stream rear doors and paid one's fare to the conductor who stood directly in front of them on the opposite side. One could then take a seat and/or exit the car either at the single center door or the double-stream front doors. Chicago had one of the largest PCC fleets but the size of their system was such that they could be found only on a few heavily used routes.
The CSL makes another appearance for my camera, this time with both SW1500s reversing through Hammond, IN.
