Cranberry Harvest Time

Water reels are driven through the flooded bog, knocking the berries off their submerged vines. Because cranberries contain air chambers, they float, making them much easier to collect.

cranberry relish with added orange, bramley apple, pomegranate seeds, orange juice, ginger and cinnamon, sugar optional. now in the fridge to hopefully become flavoursome and exciting :)

i followed Thomas Cizauskas recipe flic.kr/p/Bkne7k with thanks

i used dried cranberries as i couldn't find fresh cranberries. the orange juice will soak into them and plump them up. i'll give it the occasional stir just to make sure. cranberry relish will be a side serving on every meal throughout the festive week

update

leftover cranberry relish was spooned into small pots and placed in the counter top freezer to be eaten as and when in the new year

Cranberry flowers, so tiny I had to get my nose to them to see properly, are they tiny or does that say something about my eyesight :-)

In our part of the world we have lots of cranberry and blueberry fields. This is part of a very enjoyable two hour loop on the dykes where you get to see numerous types of birds. In the distance is one of the many cranberry fields.

Thoughtful feedback, constructive criticisms, and suggestions are always appreciated. Use of this photo without permission is not permitted. Contact me if you would like to use it.

Well, they will be when I get it all together....

I've finally perfected a great muffin with one whole orange pureed in a blender ...yep, skin and all.

The recipe .. from 'Company's Coming', calls for dates and I left them in as well...but added cranberries because that was what I wanted.

What a yummy muffin!

The reason? One time, 2 years ago...I had a cranberry/orange muffin from McDonald's of all places....and, ...it was pretty good. I enjoyed the flavours and wanted to make my own, seeing as I never (okay.... hardly ever) buy ready made food.

It's a bit fiddly with having to use the blender .. and clean it .. and chop cranberries, etc...but, hey .... it's worth it for these babies!

Happy Saturated Saturday!

♫ The Cranberries - Zombie ♫

∎ Dolores O'Riordan

_______________________________________________

"Zombie" is a protest song by Irish alternative rock band the Cranberries, written by the band's lead singer Dolores O'Riordan about The Troubles in Northern Ireland. It was released on 19 September 1994 by Island Records as the lead single from their second studio album, No Need to Argue (1994), two weeks ahead of the album's release. Music critics have long recognized "Zombie" as "a masterpiece of alternative rock", as well as a grunge number uncharacteristic of the band's other work.

"Zombie" reached No. 1 on the charts of Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, and Iceland, and although it did not chart on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, it did reach No. 1 on the US Billboard Alternative Airplay chart. In addition, the song was voted by Australian radio Triple J listeners as No. 1 on the 1994 Triple J Hottest 100 chart. It won the Best Song Award at the 1995 MTV Europe Music Awards. The accompanying music video was directed by Samuel Bayer.

In 2017, the song was released as an acoustic, stripped-down version on the band's Something Else album. In April 2020, it became the first song by an Irish group to surpass one billion views on YouTube.

Background

The Troubles were a conflict in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to 1998. During the conflict more than 3,500 people died and thousands more were injured. The Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), an Irish republican paramilitary organisation, waged an armed campaign to end British rule in Northern Ireland and unite the region with the Republic of Ireland. Republican and Unionist paramilitaries killed thousands of people. Over 10,000 bomb attacks were perpetrated by paramilitary groups in Ireland and England.

The song was written in response to the death of Johnathan Ball, aged 3, and Tim Parry, aged 12, both of whom had been killed in the 1993 Warrington bombings, when two IRA improvised explosive devices hidden in litter bins were detonated in a shopping street in Warrington, England. Ball died at the scene of the bombing as a result of his shrapnel-inflicted injuries, and five days later, Parry lost his life as a result of head injuries. 56 others were injured, some seriously. Parry died in his father's arms in a hospital in Walton, Liverpool. The two boys had gone shopping to buy Mother's Day cards on one of the town's busiest shopping streets.

There were a lot of bombs going off in London and I remember this one time a child was killed when a bomb was put in a rubbish bin – that's why there's that line in the song, 'A child is slowly taken'. [ ... ] We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard – I was quite young, but I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' – that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension.

Highly endangered species in the Netherlands and very vulnerable in Belgium, so we were very excited we could capture some of this beautiful butterflies.

Set of glasses at an auction

All our auctions are online- similar to eBay. The only difference is that you have to pick up your bought items locally, though "locally" is kind of misleading- the place is in Fayetteville TN, and we are at least 50 miles away. It's a pretty drive, though, so no complaining, and LOTS of fun!

When there seem to be too many people about, we call ahead and they will bring our items out and leave them at the car. If we go inside to pick up, we are always masked and distanced. The warehouse where the items are is huge, and we get to look at the next week's items, if we want to! Otherwise, really, it's kind of a risk in bidding because you don't really know if something is as good as it seems, or what all may be in the box, but that's exciting, too! :)

I used about 15 ounces of cranberries and about 3/4 cup of sugar, mix well and set in fridge overnight. I'm guessing an hour or so would be okay too. I then chopped 8 jalapeno peppers, 1 large sweet yellow pepper, 1 small sweet onion, ( green onions would be nice but were not available for me) chopped cilantro, zest and juice from one lime. Mix together and allow to chill in fridge for an hour before serving. Delicious on multi grain crackers. I've read that you can serve it with cream cheese.

Two beautiful sunny winter mornings this past weekend. This one is from Saturday morning. It's definitely more difficult to get out and shoot in the winter, but mornings like this are worth it.

Abstract of a cranberry bush from along side the horseshoe lake trail near the Denali park headquarters. This is captured in camera, not a photoshop effect. There are a lot failed attempts as you make brush strokes with the camera across the subject, but eventually you'll get one that works. I hope you like it.
