The Quran describes the oppressor or tyrant as "deaf, dumb and blind", which is essentially the spiritual reality of the tyrant. He cannot hear the cries of his victims; he cannot communicate with those he oppresses because he imperiously views them as representatives of a lower order of being than himself, and thus as mere commodities to be exploited or, even worse, as plagues to be cleansed; and he cannot see the harm he does. Aristotle (d. 322 BC) reminds us that all tyrants invariably surround themselves with sycophants because they cannot bear the truth. But the tyrant also needs these sycophants because he demands tacit approval of his beliefs and actions, and most of all he fears an honest and critical view of himself. The more the tyrant's power grows, the less he tolerates dissent. What is true of the tyrant is also true of the tyrannical nation. He demands that everyone agree with him and affirm his position because he cannot see, hear or speak to anyone but himself. He believes that his vision is clear, his understanding is unsurpassed, and his words, and only his words, are worthy of utterance or consideration. As human beings, only through others can we truly see ourselves, hear ourselves and talk to ourselves; but in his fixation on himself the tyrant is totally incapable of such reflection.

We arrive at Carrasqueira / the Kermes Oak. It is a stone wall, almost entirely smooth, 35 meters (114,83 ft) high. It is considered an easy, first-degree climb, with the proper equipment.

In ten minutes, I overcome the wall; in less than half an hour I am at the top of Pedra da Gávea and I sent an SMS “I got at the top”.

Any turn of the trail does not deserve great consideration: the path is known and, downhill, all the saints help. But the journey back from Pedra da Gávea is much more tiring than expected. The knees need to act as a shock absorber, receiving a load equivalent to 3.5 times the weight of the human body.

I don't think that kindness is a weakness,

I don't have a problem with compassion,

Tell me what you're thinking?

Would you like to be so high?

Could you give consideration to something that you did not realize?

Would you close your ears to the things you did not believe?

Tell me would you be strong? Would you be the one to carry on?

Half don't come here, half don't come here,

Half don't come here, so I do.

It's gonna be alright.

Citadel ('Tvrđa' in Croatian) of the city of Osijek, Croatia

It is the best-preserved and largest ensemble of Baroque buildings in Croatia and a unique example of an eighteenth-century military, administrative, and commercial urban center, as described by the World Monuments Fund.

After the fortress's military importance decreased at the end of the 19th century, Tvrđa became the center of administrative, educational, cultural, and scholarly life in Osijek and the entire region. The first school in Osijek was organized at Tvrđa and the first printing press started working in 1735. The significance of educational institutions of Tvrđa are best underlined by the fact that Croatian Nobel Prize laureates, Lavoslav Ružička and Vladimir Prelog, along with Serbian scientist Milutin Milanković (Milankovitch cycles), were all alumni (graduates) of the Tvrđa schools.

Tvrđa is on UNESCO's 'Tentative List' for consideration as a World Heritage Site.

In these days when statues are toppling on a daily basis, Darlington should say a word in praise of Mr Pease who stands on a plinth in High Row.

In 2008, this statue, erected in 1875, was one of 21 across the country to have their listing schedules enhanced because of their importance to the anti-slavery movement.

Four friezes on Joseph Pease’s plinth tell his life story. On one of those friezes, a slave writes the word “freedom” above the heads of a rejoicing crowd.

The Peases were Quakers, who believed that all people were equal before God. Joseph’s uncle, also called Joseph, lived at Feethams where the Town Hall is today, and from the earliest years of the 19th Century, he led a national campaign against slavery in India.

He fired his daughter, Elizabeth, with enthusiasm for the cause of fairness, and she founded the Darlington Ladies Anti-Slavery Society in the mid-1830s – it was one of the first women’s political movements in the country.

In 1840, Elizabeth was one of six women to attend the World Anti-Slavery Convention in London where, to her horror, she discovered that because she was female she was not only forbidden from speaking but she had to sit behind a bar and a curtain. This unfairness fired her further and she became a feminist, arguing that women should be equal also.

In 1853, though, she married a Glasgow university professor of astronomy who was not a Quaker. “Marrying out” was still frowned upon and so broke ties with Darlington and lived the rest of her life in Edinburgh, campaigning for women to get the vote.

In 1832, Elizabeth persuaded her cousin Joseph to break with Quaker tradition and stand for Parliament so he could further the cause of anti-slavery. He won the South Durham seat, and became the first nonconformist MP in the Commons for 200 years.

Joseph joined fellow MP William Wilberforce in campaigning to free slaves.

In his longest speech, Joseph appealed to other MPs "on behalf of their poor brethren of colour whose sufferings under the present system were of a nature to stimulate every feeling bosom to concede to them a paramount consideration”.

The speech covers 40 pages in Hansard, the Parliamentary record, and as Joseph delivered it, he became increasingly wrapped up in the emotion of it, much to the delight of the Whig MPs opposite him.

Hansard records: "He felt the inadequacy of his powers in pleading such a cause. (Here, the hon gentleman was so affected he was obliged to pause for a moment. Much cheering.)

"The house will pardon me (concluded Mr Pease) for having so long trespassed upon their attention. I am unable to go on. But when the great and solemn day shall come, when I shall myself stand in need of mercy, I hope it will be meted to me in the same measure as I am disposed to mete it to others."

Despite the ridicule, Joseph's speech was widely regarded by anti-slavery campaigners as for providing moral justification for the cause, and the Abolition of Slavery Act received Royal Assent on August 28, 1833.

Unfortunately, Wilberforce never lived to see it – he died a month earlier, just as the Stockton & Darlington Railway was taking delivery of its engine No 23.

The Wilberforce engine crossing the Gaunless.

It was designed by Timothy Hackworth, but had been built by Robert Stephenson & Co in Newcastle. It was a major step forward for the railway: Locomotion No 1 of 1825 had been able to pull 250 tons of coal per mile per hour but locomotive No 23 was able to pull 1,250 tons of coal per mile per hour, and it was the first engine in the dark green paint that the S&DR then adopted for all of its locos.

No 23 was named Wilberforce in honour of the anti-slavery campaigner.

While it may not seem like the most important consideration, color was the first thing I knew when I began looking for Blanca's successor. The color I saw in my mind was gold. It had some kind of deep mystical significance to me that my next dog should be painted in gentle golden tones. When I first laid eyes on Tidda, I couldn't help noticing how she fit this vision to a T.

And then I happened to notice one day while she was playing with one of Blanca's toys that pink looks surprisingly good on her! What's more, Tidda has been leading me to discover the magical pink world of dawn, so I continue to feel there's a deeper meaning to the new colors she brings into my life.

When I drove past, this unusual-looking piece of wood caught my eye. After quick consideration I did a U-turn and went back to see what it was. The Bittern had come out a bit more and presented itself for photographs, in its typical posture imitating its environment. And then it slowly moved away.

Ronda is the most spectacular and popular example of hilltowns in this area. It is easy to underestimate Ronda and not give it the attention it deserves. It is also where bullfighting started and the newer (but still old) town that you can see to the right is quite extensive with some of the best tapas restaurants in Spain. Often a tapas crawl in places like Seville caters to tourists and does not offer a truly authentic experience. Spending less than a full day in Ronda is a crime and several days if you want to take in the local environs is worth serious consideration. More can be learned here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronda

I recently turned to a “random decision maker” app to help get me motivated again. The info that I entered for consideration consisted of location, camera and lens, b&w or color and aspect ratio. My spin for today told me to go to Waterloo, Wisconsin and use my Leica D-Lux 4 set to b&w in 16:9 ratio. That isn’t a combination I’d think of using but it was fun trying something different.

It's a time for everything.

It's always a time for afterthought, I sure have done that this year.

It's a wonder that I still have one or two brain cells left, lol.

Brain cells aren't used only for work.

Difficult tasks within can blow your mind away.

Why is that?

When you are at work you use your brain in a relatively calm, rational way, it's mostly based on knowledge.

When you are dealing with your inner being you will touch your feelings as soon as you open the door only a tiny bit.

And that hurts.

We normally don't like to be hurt.

Therefore we leave things to be instead of dealing with them, even though you know that you do things in a way you know isn't proper for you or others.

And then you are stuck.

It only gets worse, it never gets fixed without your attention.

Somehow the problem keeps growing and will become like a domino, leaving you with even more tasks to deal with, but the same problem is there like a basis, a foundation, it just transforms into different shapes.

"The story of my life..", you can think, "Why am I always so unlucky?"

Giving it attention is the same as giving the problem light.

Darkness is never a solution.

Light is.

Attention can be done in many ways. When you first are aware of that something is wrong, then you have taken the first step.

We all deal with our stuff in different ways.

The most important is that you actually deal with it.

Some don't need dwelling, back an forth, some know exactly what to do and proceed.

Some needs breaks in thinking, to let it all mature and when the time is right, they do what they need to do.

I'm a slow one, taking into consideration all and everything.

But when I know I'm right, I act like a tsunami. 2018 has been filled with emotional tsunamis, followed by action and intuition.

Tsunami after tsunami.

My tsunamis are like fire in the forest, my foundation gets cleansed, purified and leaving me with a new respect and love for myself and leaving me ready for new adventures.

The unknown is always a nice pillow, we can make many excuses to just be left stuck.

We often don't see that we are doing just that.

Time for heavy food has been and is definitely over for me, for a long time.

Heavy food can make me sleepy and slow in my body and mind.

I can feel the urge of going for a hike instead of eating the dessert.

But I'm not rude, so of course I don't do that, lol.

The company I have had this Christmas was just as perfect as it should be.

Everyone was thankful for the nice time we could have together, everyone in a good mood.

One special person was missing, but this year has indeed been an adventurous year and we all needed to end the year in this way.

I'm thankful for what has been.

I'm thankful for what is.

I'm thankful for what is to come.

Dear diary, thanks for listening to me this year 😁 I will continue in 2019, I promise, lol.

My journey isn't over yet.

And remember, when I'm in 97 I will be jumping in parachute from a plane 😅

Wikipedia: Phanom Rung Historical Park is an archaeological site in Thailand, covering the ruins of Prasat Phanom Rung, a Hindu Khmer Empire temple complex set on the rim of an extinct volcano at 402 meters (1,319 ft) elevation. It is located in Buriram Province in the Isan region of Thailand, and was built at a time when Khmer social-political influences were significant in Srisaket. It was built of sandstone and laterite between the 10th and 13th centuries. It was a Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva, and symbolises Mount Kailash, his heavenly dwelling.

Thailand's Department of Fine Arts spent 17 years restoring the complex to its original state from 1971 to 1988. On 21 May 1988, the park was officially opened by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. In 2005, the temple was submitted to UNESCO for consideration as a future World Heritage Site.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phanom_Rung_Historical_Park

Photographers note: This was my second visit to this site. Family was visiting and wanted to see some ancient Khmer ruins. We visited four sites in two days.

The first modern Christmas card was sent in 1843, commissioned by Sir Henry Cole in London, who wanted a simpler way to send holiday greetings. Designed by artist John Callcott Horsley, the card depicted a family celebrating and scenes of charity, kicking off the tradition of commercial Christmas cards, with about one thousand printed initially for a shilling each. By the time this three dimensional card of the Adoration of the Magi was produced in 1905, production values and printing quality had improved vastly, as this chromolithographed card shows.

I am not an overly religious person, but I know there are a number of my Flickr friends and followers, for whom their religious beliefs are an intrinsic part of them, and others gain comfort and valuable insights about life lessons and how to navigate our ever more complex world from readings of their Holy texts. Regardless of whether you are religious or not, or whether you read the Bible, the Torah, the Qur'an or something else entirely, one cannot deny the valuable lessons our Holy texts teach. They teach us to have humility, be kind to our fellow human beings, compassionate, caring and considerate.

So this Christmas, amongst all the tinsel, festive garlands and baubles, please take a moment to show kindness, compassion, care and consideration to those around you. I firmly believe that you reap what you sow, so making a difference starts with you. You have great power at your very fingertips to make a positive difference to someone with a single gesture: a kind word, a smile, a helping hand or an act of generosity.

The festive season is one of good cheer and goodwill to all, and this world needs as much of that as we can muster collectively.

Merry Christmas!

Laurent Trezegnies’s sculptures are largely conditioned by a consideration of places of intervention and by a desire to modify the way in which they may be understood. For Art Public Liège, he developed an installation using lashing straps stretched between the base of the two piers of the Saucy footbridge and the structure of its deck. The red lines thus define two beams which radiate upwards. There are games with the presence of the river: oppositions with the blackness of its waters; reflections with its surface; of resonances with the movement of waves. “I work on the expressive richness of the line, on its interpretations. With a piece like this, I question how drawing can be applied to environmental forms to expand, renew, enrich the perception of the place and offer a new vibration. As in most of my interventions, the materials are industrial, those whose expressive power is generally held to be non-existent. In addition, the straps modify the frequency of the wind and bring a sound dimension. "

Amazed to see this new house being constructed in a decidedly old-fashioned style. It's called a gambrel roof. A bit of the original is still standing to the rear and it appears that this will be clad with clapboards and have neo-classical trim and color. Perhaps the original was so riddled with termites that it couldn't be repaired. But the property with house is still too valuable to jettison. Whatever they do, in Berkeley it will recoup the expense!! People will pay anything to live here!

No consideration of a chimney in this re-build, because open fires are now against the law in Berkeley (bad emissions and working for better air).

Shadows and Light, A careful consideration of light's impact on color is reflected in the work of the masters of the Venetian School period. Whereas other movements would mimic the actual color of a subject as a whole, Venetian colorists would incorporate the subtle shifts of hue caused by the reflected light on the subject with their unique layering and blending techniques. With the interplay of shadows and light across a subject, traditional Venetian color application suggests form without sharp edges, creating a difficult to achieve sense of depth and realism.
