Some national parks have a particular spot or place that many would consider representative or iconic. For Canyonlands, Mesa Arch is that place. I was excited to visit this arch despite deeply-rooted fears from many online readings about how insanely overcrowded this place can get (especially at sunrise). Thankfully, I showed up in the late afternoon with only a handful of people and a relatively peaceful scene. Although I intended to brave the crowds/horde for sunrise, I instead opted to stay out shooting astro the night before. I'll be back again one day to get this "trophy shot" at sunrise, likely with this exact composition...or whatever spot is left available, as I've heard many stories of people showing up two hours before sunrise to claim their spot by this actually very tiny arch.

A Lower perspective than my previous post and a bit later. A few minutes later, Mt. Hood would be enveloped by lower clouds.

When I consider perspective, the word distance comes to mind. Distance from people, places, and things. Distance from past occurrences both good, comfortable and bad, uncomfortable. In this image, I am looking at a more in-depth perspective or distance within and out of my person. Most often, I believe, holding on to a positive attitude helps to maintain a healthy outlook on life.

I'm forever evaluating my behavior. Am I kind enough? Do I say the right things? Is my presence a positive light, contributing more rather than less?

There is a wide-world swirling with pockets of darkness that seem to have an unexplainable magnetism. For myself, holding on to perspective begins within me, the hope of retaining positivity and sharing the light matters.

Je me souviens !

I love his freckles.

I consider today a milestone for my 365. This is my third 365 photo project and I always find the first 99 days the hardest to get through and I get a little bit excited once I have reached the 100 day mark. Triple digits!! As a kid I remember being so excited to turn 10 years old. Double digits! Geez, I wish I could go back to being a single digit age. :)

When I went to the Dollarstore and bought the candles the cashier got excited and asked me if someone in my family would be celebrating their 100th birthday. I replied "No, these candles are just for a project I am working on." If she only knew lol. The candles might not be used for a birthday, but today deserved cupcakes, right?

100 down....only 265 more to go! lol

I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to shoot the last great Alco show in the west. Back in May of 2012 I went on an epic week long tour of the west with three friends centered around chasing the 3751's journey to and from the Grand Canyon. But, of course, we railfanned much of the BNSF transcon and the Phoenix Sub as well. While in Holbrook we were extremely lucky to run into the once weekly "Blue Looper" coal train heading to the Cataylst Mill. This train would only run for two more months until the mill shut down and the famous blue hoppers were all scrapped in short order.

But on this day all was right with the world as a brace of six classic 4-motor Alco C420s & MLW C424s lug the heavy coal train around the S-curves approaching the end of their 38 mile run.

Portrait of Pope Innocent X is an oil on canvas portrait by the Spanish painter Diego Velázquez, executed during a trip to Italy around 1650. Many artists and art critics consider it the finest portrait ever created. It is housed in the Galleria Doria Pamphilj in Rome. A smaller version is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and a study is on display at Apsley House in London. The painting is noted for its realism as an unflinching portrait of a highly intelligent, shrewd, and aging man. He is dressed in linen vestments, and the quality of the work is evident in the rich reds of his upper clothing, head-dress, and the hanging curtains.

The pope, born Giovanni Battista Pamphilj, was initially wary of sitting for Velázquez, but relented after he was shown reproductions of portraits by the artist. A contributing factor for this large advancement in the painter's career was that he had already depicted a number of members of Pamphilj's inner court. The pope, however, remained cautious, and the painting was initially displayed only to his immediate family, and was largely lost from public view through the 17th and 18th centuries.

The portrait was painted during Velázquez's second voyage to Italy, between 1649 and 1651. The subject's vestments are of light linen, suggesting that the picture was probably painted during summer, most likely in 1650. Velázquez included his signature on the paper in the pope's hands, but the date is not readable. There are two versions of the story of how Velázquez came to paint the portrait. According to one of these, while visiting Rome, Velázquez, already a renowned painter, was granted an audience with Pope Innocent X. He offered to paint a portrait of the pope, but Innocent X mistrusted Velázquez's fame, and asked for proof of Veláquez's skills. It would have been then that Velázquez painted the portrait of his servant Juan de Pareja (today at display in the Metropolitan Museum of New York). Once Innocent saw that portrait, he agreed to sit for the artist.

Apparently, when the pope saw the finished portrait, he exclaimed: "È troppo vero! È troppo vero!" ("It's too true! It's too true!"), though he did not deny the extraordinary quality of the portrait.[4] Experts doubt the veracity of this story, and argue that the pope allowed Velázquez to paint him because he had already painted with great success other people from the inner papal court, including the pope's barber.

The portrait was kept at private display by Innocent's family, the Pamphilj, who would display it in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery where it remains to this day. For much of the 17th and 18th centuries, it was a relatively unknown work, familiar only to a few connoisseurs who regarded it to be one of the finest portraits ever. French historian Hippolyte Taine considered the portrait as "the masterpiece amongst all portraits" and said "once it has been seen, it is impossible to forget".

The art dealer René Gimpel noted in his diary in 1923 "Morgan would have offered a million dollars for it. Velázquez was faced with a ruddy Italian, and the artist, accustomed to the pale complexions of his country, unhesitatingly steeped his brush in red the color of wine and brought the bon vivant devastatingly to life.... That face is a whirlpool of flesh, and blood, and life; the eyes are searching.

The 20th century artist Francis Bacon painted a series of distorted variants, often known as the "Screaming Popes", which total more than forty-five known variants executed during the 1950s and early 1960s. The picture was described by Gilles Deleuze as an example of creative re-interpretation of the classical. Bacon avoided seeing the original, but the painting remained the single greatest influence on him; its presence can be seen in many of his best works from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. In Bacon's 1953 version Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X, the pope is shown screaming yet his voice is "silenced" by the enclosing drapes and dark rich colors which have been said to create a grotesque and nightmarish tone. The pleated curtains of the backdrop are rendered transparent and appear to fall through the representation of the pope's face.

A reversed form of the portrait features on the cover of occult rock band Ghost's 2018 album Prequelle.

Another treasure found while poking around Finn Slough. Every time I go there I see something different.

Having artificially darkened the sky of this panoramic shot of Happisburgh Lighthouse I did consider adding a light but with a lot of these things, it's knowing when to stop.......

From Wikipedia : "Happisburgh Lighthouse in Happisburgh on the North Norfolk coast is the only independently operated lighthouse in Great Britain. It is also the oldest working lighthouse in East Anglia......

In 1987 Happisburgh was one of five lighthouses declared redundant by Trinity House and deactivation was planned for June 1988. Villagers organised a petition to oppose the closure, and as a result the date was postponed.

Under the Merchant Shipping Act of 1894, Trinity House may dispose of a working lighthouse only to an established Lighthouse Authority. On 25 April 1990 the Happisburgh Lighthouse Act received the Royal Assent establishing the Happisburgh Lighthouse Trust as a Local Light Authority, and Happisburgh became the only independently run operational lighthouse in Great Britain."

DEAR FRIENDS

Please consider this picture as my last upload from this account. Being busy with many other things, I find it difficult to manage things here, as I used to.

Anyway, I do not want to give up my passion, and I wish to be in touch with my wonderful friends here. So I have opened a new account to continue with my friends. Please add me if you consider me as your friend :-)

THIS IS MY NEW FLICKR ID

See you there :-)

Romanesco: Some consider it a variety of Broccoli, others a variety of Cauliflower. I consider it a variety of "WTF? That's seriously cool!". I picked this up at the Farmer's Market on Saturday. It should make a pretty interesting curry, though I might try and get a better picture of it first.

Update: I kept this around in the fridge with the full intention of getting a better shot before I ate it. Unfortunately, I procrastinated too long and it went bad....double damn! I never saw this again at the farmers market either. Oh well, maybe next year.

Personalidades

Consider Tour Montparnasse as an alternative to the endless queues (or lines if you don't like French) of La Tour Eiffel... After all you can't see the Eiffel Tower from the Eiffel can you? (Normally you can go on the top of the roof of the 56 floor Montparnasse Tower seeing Paris 360° but we were unlucky arriving on that one day when the roof was closed and had to see it from a window).

Dear Flickr friends, this marks the end of my travel blog (and my vacation days) from France, posting 27 images in 10 days "on the run" while exploring Paris and Normandie. Big and humble thanks to everyone who took time trying to keep up....

It has been a ragbag of postcards and streetshots, of monochrome and color, that really put the "fun in photography" back, as traveling always do for me. I enjoyed the liberty of not considering if it "fitted in" on my stream, or if I had the time to post to groups, to visit contacts, to leave time to get more comments...

Still, the feedback - as always - is the main reason why I enjoy Flickr so much. And after being a "hurricane" of new images to upload it is back to work - and to a regular pace from now on.

As time goes by, there will be more additions to the "Paris/Normandie 2011" set though, obviously. Cheers :-)

They're worth considering in some detail.

In my inworld profile, I concluded myself : "I'm so many things to different people, but I consider myself a pixel poet, a gardener."

In my little garden, I have grown different plants: little poppies, daisies, roses, lavenders, forget-me-not, just to name a few.

At the beginning, I planted alone. After a while, some people walked past my garden and saw the beautiful flowers. Most were kind to compliment how beautiful they are, very few would stay and ask if we could grow a plant together. Usually I would politely refuse. I know gardening is not for everyone. It takes lots of patience, love, cooperation and communication. Many people want the beautiful flowers only, not the difficult process to achieve the beauty.

Now and then I would agree to try when I see people showing initiative and interest. At first, they visited the garden regularly. We chatted, we shared love with the flowers.

After a while, their lives got busy. Some would kindly tell you that they can't continue cos they have other things to do. I thanked them for the participation, and let them go. I took care of their flowers.

Some just didn't show up without a word. I was upset, yet, I let them go too. We know gardening is not for everyone, right? So, I looked after their flowers.

A few of them showed up now and then. But everytime they were in the garden, they were being absent-minded. They watered the wrong flowers. We know gardening is not for everyone, right? After a few times, I asked if they would like to continue planting. They smiled and said yes. But then, they started to show up at the garden less and less. Sometimes I had to call them and see if they still wanted to grow the flowers. It would be okay if they were not available. They insisted yes.

Two weeks, three weeks, four weeks passed. There was once I went out for more fertilizers. I walked past the garden not far from mine. A face looked familiar to me. Oh, him. I remembered that he worked there for sometime. But the owner of the garden was on business, so he was looking for something to do to kill time. He saw my flowers so nice, so decided to garden at my place. I wondered if he would have enough time to manage the flowers here and there. He said not sure but he would like to try.

He was happily excitedly chatting with the owner while removing the weeds. I looked at them for a bit, didn't say a word, then I left.

I stared at the flowers we grew and all other flowers in the garden. Sorrow surged. I cried under a big sunflower. The flowers were abandoned.

The next day, my friends came. They visited regularly to water our flowers as usual. They saw me sleeping under the big sunflower. They cried. "Why wastes your soul on flowers that were discarded? They were meant to be grown together with other gardeners." Without an hour, they threw away all those flowers that were no longer wanted.

The garden became empty but came with some freshness. "We are not the best gardeners, but we knew that only when we have the willingness to do it together, there is a chance to keep them growing."

We can consider this species as an other grey bird without any special characters certainly, but one can also consider that this species has been observed up to 5,600 meters in altitude ! The photo itself was taken 4,400 meters above sea level, near the Chimborazo volcano, the highest peak in the Ecuadorian Andes.

This mountain is sometimes also considered the highest in the world when measured from the center of the Earth, due to its position along the equatorial line. So it is a bird perched on one of the rooftops of the world, well above the clouds, which form the background in the image. At this height the ground is mostly barren, but plants, adapted to cold climate and windy condition in growing horizontaly, still persist.

Along with him about 40 species can be observed in the Chimborazo area, which is quite staggering from an European point of view, a continent where life disappears above 3000 m.

Plumbeous Sierra-finch (Geospizopsis unicolor, french : Haplospize gris-de-plomb), taken at 4400 m near El Arenal pass, Chimborazo Province Ecuador.

A very stormy day on the Oregon Coast.

My family recently started commenting on how birds in my shots lately seem perfectly placed, to the point where they had to wonder if they were photoshopped! Nope, just have good bird luck.
