As we were driving around Merced Wildlife Refuge we were checking all the trees for nesting birds. We saw at least 4 owls on nests but they were all tucked in and harsh shadows and tree branches blocked our view. This Great Horned Owl was taking a break from sitting on the nest. Instead, it was perched on a rather sturdy branch and just stared at us with a look of a confidence and greatness. They usually adopt a nest that was built by another species, recycling at its best ! This powerful predator can take down birds and mammals even larger than itself, but it also dines on daintier fare such as tiny scorpions, mice, and frogs.

Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) males are striking royal blue above with bright orange throat and breast and bright white belly. Females are paler overall; grayish with orange on breast and sides of neck, and white belly. In this picture an adult male is sitting on a dried thistle.
About the location:
Last night I was lazing around the house, not really motivated to do anything. At around 2:00am I realized that sunrise was only a couple of hours away so I checked the Yahoo weather map conveniently located in the titlebar in Flickr, and it was showing a thin cloud layer to the west moving around 5 mph in my direction. This location is only 35 minutes from my house so I decided that I would stay up through the night and get a super early start. I always face a difficult choice on my way up into the mountains. If I head west on Hwy 138 then I have only this view without any backup locations, but if I head east I have several other options but no view that includes the city, so I have to feel pretty confident about the cloud coverage to head west but I could feel the light coming on this morning. This is a view over Lone Pine Canyon road, the city in the distance, because of the angle looks like one but is actually 3 cities, San Bernardino, Redlands and Beaumont blending together and leading up to Mount San Jacinto in the background.
About the shot:
This was shot using a technique in which you trick the camera into thinking something it's not seeing. I first set the camera to spot metering and metered the sky. Then it set the camera to underexpose by 2 stops switch to manual focus and refocus on the city lights, then I light painted the foreground with a couple of lights at a WB of 5000k.

Rosellas are in a genus that consists of six species and nineteen subspecies. These colourful parrots from Australia are in the genus Platycercus. Platycercus means broad-tailed or flat-tailed, reflecting a feature common to the rosellas and other members of the broad-tailed parrot tribe. Their diet is mainly seeds and fruit. There are, broadly speaking, three groups of rosella species. They are the blue-cheeked species which includes elegans and caledonicus, the white-cheeked species, eximius, adscitus and venustus and the yellow-cheeked species, icterotis. 16558
This week, for the first time since Jimmy died, Mack sprawled on the sidewalk. Jimmy used to do this all the time. In fact, we often saw people walking on the grass to avoid disturbing him. Mack was more confident when Jimmy was around and so he would also sometimes come out from underneath a bush to sprawl on the sidewalk. He hasn't done this since last August. I was so happy seeing Mack look relaxed with his fluffy belly showing. Luckily for me, there was also a "6" in the frame which made this photo appropriate for the Happy Caturday group this week.

An absolutely stellar lashup brings a westbound over the James River on an absolutely graffiti vandal ruined bridge. This might have been a chase for the rest of the day but it was going into the Huron Yards before continuing west. I'm pretty confident that I haven't seen a GP-9/RSD-4/RSD-4/SD-7/SD-7 lashup in the 40 years since this one....Lol. And in a strange reversal of everything looking worse now than then, this bridge was actually in nice decent paint the last time I was up here two years ago.
Young lion (Panthera leo) part of a small pride who are calling the area by Tanguila Mara their home. Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. Conservation Status: Vulnerable
Distinctive, small social crow with contrasting, silvery-grey neck shawl and staring whitish eyes; juvenile has duller shawl and eyes. Walks confidently, and can be easy to see where not persecuted; associates readily with crows and Rooks. Flocks can number in the hundreds or thousands in the non-breeding season. Inhabits open and semi-open habitats, from towns and wooded parkland to farmland and sea cliffs; often around stone buildings and chimneys. Nests in cavities. Listen for its distinctive high-pitched “tchaw, tchaw” calls.
Rufous Bush Robin (Cercotrichas galactotes) with insect Spain_9952
A distinctive sandy-brown songbird with a long rufous tail tipped black and white, often held cocked. The head has a strong white eyebrow and dark eye-line. The song is melodic and thrush-like and the call is a harsh “tek.” Usually seen foraging on the ground in open areas with dense bushes.
Thank you for all your kind comments on my photos here on Flickr. I read them all and I really appreciate them.
Warmest regards, Stephen.
