The brightest thing a house can do,

When morning fills the skies,

Is just to catch the sun's first rays,

And flash the brilliant prize.

No eighty-candle lights within

Can match the dazzling sight,

And every window-pane becomes

A fusillade of light!

Today, the terrestrial order, the order of the earth, is coming to an end. It is being succeeded by the digital order. Heidegger was the last thinker of the terrestrial order. Death and pain do not belong to the digital order. They represent disturbances. Mourning and longing are also suspicious. The pain of the nearness of distance is alien to the digital order. Distance is inscribed into nearness. The digital order transforms nearness into the absence of distance, so that it is no longer painful. Under the compulsion of availability, everything is rendered accessible and consumable. The digital habitus is: everything must be available at once. The telos of the digital order is total availability. This order lacks the 'slowness of the hesitant shyness in the face of what cannot be done'.

A mysterious figure appears in the branches as the Milky way rises above the ancient one in The Ancient Bristlecone Forest.

Both William and I were really itching to get out during the Milky Way season and particularly at this time of year which provides a very nice arch. On my last trip here I was rained out, which put me behind schedule for my ideal MW position so I didn't get the shot I hoped for, but I swore that I would return one day to exact my revenge and attack this spot for a panorama. During the day we had checked the MW positioning with photo pills and it worked out to be the perfect time to grab the shot. We returned at midnight and began shooting. About 15 minutes in, a headlamp appeared down the trail and soon we where joined by a courteous young man from Canada. Luckily, he was already familiar with the low level lighting technique so there would be no issues with conflicting light sources, Nice!! We had a great time chatting and shot way past 2 A.M. As I was setting up this comp we were talking about how creepy this tree looks so we made several different lighting situations, backlit, side lit, and also used a couple of t-lights which were provided by our new "canadian connection" Mike Kukucska. When we settled on a good lighting scenario Bill took a few test shots and ended up with a shot that looked like a dead body tangled in the branches. Holy Crap!!! CREEPY!!!

The elevation at this location is around 10,000 feet so the air is crisp with very little haze and relatively low light pollution levels, it is even designated as a "dark sky" location.

When temps started to dip into the 20's Bill and I decided it was about time to bail, he took off for the cars and I remained behind to remove all the light sources and as I stumbled back down the trail found a strong compulsion to occasionally look back over my shoulder. Hehe. Man is night photography exhilarating and addicting, I must be addicted because I still haven't passed this damn kidney stone. :)

When I arrived home and started processing this shot I noticed a "Creepy" hob goblin, looking thingy crawling up on the branches in the middle of the tree. Man, there goes the hair on the back of my neck again, LOL. The line poking in from the right side of the frame is the tip of a fallen tree. I would have removed it but thought it was interesting that it was pointing right at the man in the milky way.

After a challenging week, there's nothing I'm craving more than sipping cocktails by the beach. The cool sea breeze across your face, the warmth of the sun enveloping you. Today's inspiration for the breathtaking Ionic Promise Land home. This 51 Li gem offers both low prim count and exceptional quality. With nearly 360-degree views, it welcomes nature and light into your living space effortlessly.

In my landscaping, I've incorporated classic elements such as the pebble shoreline from Studio Skye, creating a natural and picturesque beach setting. Delicate palms from Compulsion, scaled up for added height, and larger palms from Studio Felgo add to the scene's beauty with their thick, detailed trunks. To introduce a touch of greenery, I've scattered Creosote bushes among the beach rocks.

For lounging and unwinding, I've chosen a versatile outdoor (or indoor set) from KraftWork, boasting beautiful neutral tones and a rattan base that complements the beachy atmosphere perfectly. This scene comes together beautifully with around 400 prims, making it an ideal setting for a low prim permanent coastal retreat.

No one noticed the change at first. It began as a hum—soft, constant, like the world itself was vibrating. Scientists blamed solar winds, engineers blamed faulty towers, and everyone else kept scrolling, swiping, and tapping as if the glow of their mobile screens was the only real light left in the world.

But the electromagnetic haze thickened, weaving itself into the air like invisible fog. It happened gradually, then all at once: humanity shrank. Legs multiplied. Skin hardened. Voices collapsed into clicks.

By the time the first phones slipped from now-tiny hands onto the dirt, the human race had already become ants.

Panic spread through the colonies that formed where cities once stood. Towers became mountains; sidewalks became plains of cracked stone; skyscrapers, once filled with people, now loomed like impossible cliffs. The surface world was still there—just too enormous to reach. All they could do was crawl into the cracks, the tunnels, the places humans had once tried so hard to avoid.

It wasn’t fear that drove them underground. It was instinct—the leftover human longing for shelter now twisted into an insect’s compulsion to burrow.

In the dark beneath the earth, fragments of the old world remained: a shattered phone screen reflecting faded blue, a glittering field of lost earbuds, tangled charging cables like the roots of some technological tree. The ants remembered these objects—not clearly, but like dreams. Some ants slept curled beside a fallen phone as if waiting for it to wake them. Others tapped at its glass, producing only the faintest flicker of static.

Legends spread through the tunnels: stories of the surface, where sunlight still shone and wind still carried warmth instead of static. A few brave ants made the climb every day, scrambling up through drainpipes and cracks, but the open world always overwhelmed them. The sky was too vast, the ground too exposed, and every bird overhead meant death. They returned below, trembling.

Deep in the earth, the colonies began to whisper—if clicking mandibles could be called whispering. They spoke of the Great Hum, of the screens that had once glued their attention, of how they had traded the world’s wonders for glowing rectangles that fit in their palms.

Some believed they could change back. Others accepted that humans had simply become what they had behaved like for years: small creatures, living in tunnels, blind to the real world above.

But every night, when the hum faded and the tunnels grew still, the ants dreamed of walking upright again… of holding hands instead of antennae… of standing on the surface beneath a sky that no longer felt impossibly far away.

And sometimes—only sometimes—they swore they could hear a phone ringing somewhere above them, calling them back to what they once were.

But none were ever able to answer.

Dante wrote the Comedy out of the one compulsion, that is, simply for truth’s sake – for truth’s sake you write theology because there is something that needs saying that calls for it, and you write poetry because that is the only way truthfully to say it.

I don't know why but I've had this itch to pose as Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast at Tiffany's for the past few days. I've done it before, but the compulsion resurfaced. And I've seen other ladies doing the same, so maybe there's something in the air.

We decided to take the 'back roads' up through Victoria, mainly to visit the pub at Alexandra which featured on 'Selling Houses Australia' During our picturesque journey I was amazed by these handsome tall trees, their attractive peeling barks were highlighted after some light rain. Unfortunately I had to drive a few kilometers up to the top of the range as it was not possible to pull over. Such was the compulsion that I went all the way back down again and I walked in to capture this view despite almost missing our planned lunch stop.

What is left of the light returns and shines

And I am not sure if that’s my salvation

Or some cruel last twist

A burst of sick atomic glory

Ready to burn me to a crisp

The pale horse has passed over this land

And the ground suddenly withers

Shrivels eerily without a sound

How can you let me see this

Is it in my dreams

Are you telling me I am the horse-rider

The harbinger of death

And the end of all things

I started to compose this work earlier on last year in 2024, and it was this image that made me think I could create a series out of the images that I took that chilly afternoon in February. It became a compulsion as the visions would not leave me alone.

The words for this work came quickly actually, but sat in my notebook for quite a while until I put the image and the poem together in the Spring of this year.

Parts of the world have descended into a perilous state as the days and weeks have passed during this year and now we have reached the 80th Anniversary of the dropping of two nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan on the 6th August, 1945, which eventually brought about the end of World War II.

This particular work from this series has become a lament for what was…and what could be again. There is no going back from such a decision if it is made and carried out, and all of our Gods and Angels would weep for our souls yet again.

This work is from my Winter Stories Series, and the image was taken on the Litlington Road in East Sussex in England. To see other works in this series have a look at the “The Winter Stories Series” Flickr Album, click link here:

www.flickr.com/photos/193518971@N02/albums/72177720328400...

And this series also appears on my website where you can appreciate the works as a designed piece without distractions and in the order I wish them to be viewed and read. There is also an extensive introduction on this page which gives more detail about how the work was created.

“You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch.”

In celebration of Virginia Woolf's 136th birthday.

To The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf is a novel about childhood emotions and adult relationships. It is about loss, subjectivity, the nature of art and the problem of perception …

“She was like a crinkled poppy; with the desire to drink dry dust.”

― Virginia Woolf, The Waves

“I make no apologies for who I am. I thought to put all sadness on another account; to squirrel it away; to cry in silence, but today I am decidedly against it. I am me and I must be able to express myself because to keep those feelings of such magnitude inside me is untenable. So many people suffer in silence, but why should they … Always I come back to the words of my Wisest Friend … “understanding is the first step towards love.” To understand me is to love me, you understand …

Soon I will be leaving for my little island where I can sleep like a baby; where there is only peace and where I can be at one with nature; where I feel no pain or anguish; where time stands still and where my mind is stilled; a place where I can just be … “ - AP

Soundtrack : www.youtube.com/watch?v=597lnTSyTyI

THE WAVES – TUESDAY – MAX RICHTER

Virginia's words read by Gillian Anderson

Virginia my love; my soul mate

I have an affinity with you

deeper than the ocean

the depths of emotions

that took your life

deprived the world

of such a beautiful heart and soul

a brilliant mind; a tenderness

a gift for words; a capacity for love

that surpasses all mortal understanding

and yet, am I not mortal then

I often wondered …

sometimes I feel a yearning

a strange compulsion grips me

I find myself on the beach

the sea stretched endlessly before me

absent-mindedly I fill my pockets

the heaviest pebbles; the densest stones

as if my heavy heart

is not enough to weigh me down

still I need the comforting weight

the weight that took you from this world

yes, I feel that too, almost every day

but in these dark days that overwhelm me

when I cannot sleep unless I purge myself of my emotions

the floods that dampen my pillow

ironic how water always plays it's part

the sharp scalding salty tears

like the waves, the waves, the waves

the current; the rip-tide is strong today

it pulls me like a magnet

draws the steel sword driven through me

a metallic taste so bitter on my tongue

I am other-wordly

my unseeing gaze disturbs the birds

the mournful cries of the gulls overhead

soft wings sweep the tears from my cheeks

this life I have is not for the mild; the meek

I find myself on the mud flats

sinking slowly; more slowly than my pulse that quickens

how strange and precious is our time here

we let it trickle through our fingers

like the sand in an egg timer

one minute; two minutes; three …

hard-boiled; no, not me; not ever

no matter what fate decides for me

my heart will still be gentle

it hurts to feel this much

everything seems too big; too loud; too much

like the images in the rear view mirror

smoke and mirrors; dust to dust

ashes to ashes; needs … needs must

to overcome my present state

I cannot and maybe that is how it should be

who knows where our end will lie

are we, after all, not born to die

I hear a shout; barely audible on the wind

seems more like a whisper

carried away so swiftly

horses hooves; ah yes, I remember

as a small child falling asleep to this sound

only now I know it was just an illusion

the sound of my own beating heart

resounding within my ears

the rythmn of my life; of all life

have you ever put your ear to the ground

and heard the earth beat

have you ever fallen to your knees

in resolute defeat

this world was never meant for me

the subtle little cruelties;

the violent vivid passions that engulf me

some sleepwalk through their lives

they do not notice or understand such things

“Do not abandon me!”, I cry

I am only 8 years old and I have already twice died

now that child is still within me

TRAPPED; no-one can hear me scream

there is no escaping me; my inner child

the one who allows me to see the beauty of the world

is also the one who makes me want to run

to end it all here on my beach

where as a child I ran

and then I drowned; yes really drowned

pronounced dead at the scene; my family told

but by some strange fate it was not my time

I was brought back to this life

but I was different from the child before

I was so much more; too much more …

is this my purpose then; the place where I should be

to tell you all my stories; divulge the innermost of me

I wonder; how I wonder …

am I up to the task; the skies are dark and distant thunder

drags me down; drags me under

the waves, the waves, the waves

salty tears on my eyelashes

salty waves and thunder crashes

all around me so surreal

this is it then; the meaning of my life

to end it here, my dear Virginia

to end it here with you …

your words; your thoughts; your feelings

so closely resemble mine

and yet I wonder even now

am I still to live or am I yet to die …

I sigh

my heart aches

my head hurts

the ground shakes

earth to earth

I cry …
