I returned to this location last week, and conditions have changed. The ice edge seen here has expanded, pushing out of the shadow of the tall riverbank behind me. Consequently, the cool-warm contrast that I've been playing with is no longer present. There was still some open water, but not much. I think this amazing combination of colours and shapes is gone until next winter.
But that's why we do it, don't you think? Being a nature photographer is to recognize the temporal beauty of all things wild and cyclical, and to feel a compulsion to capture some of the essence even as it fades or makes the transition into something else. And to understand that every moment is unique. The clouds above that peak will never again look precisely like this; the combination of lines, shapes, and textures in front of my lens right now will never be repeated, no matter how long the future stretches out for our species. It's the same with human faces, with fingerprints.
And yet, even as the ice melts away - or in this case, expands until the river fully freezes over - I experience a sort of speechless wonder when I'm out there, especially when I'm alone, as if I have entered a zone of timelessness. This seems to happen most often when I'm shooting macro. Somehow, the viewfinder image becomes the world. After twenty minutes or so of intense concentration, I may look up and feel astonished, because I've lost track of the larger world and where I am in it - in this instance, lying flat on the ice with my tripod, a few inches from the edge of a rushing river. It's almost an out-of-body experience. It's when I feel most alive.

Another day, another storm on the march. Another moment where I am caught between two masses. The more I visit places like this, the more in tune I feel with the land and the environment. It's not easy to explain the sort of irresistible compulsion that draws me here virtually every evening. It's strangely comfortable emotionally, even at times when I"m apprehensive or even frightened by the circumstances. I'm continually probing into the desolation under increasing darkness. It's definitely a case of pushing the boundaries. Storms really play into the intensity, both physical and emotional. Photographically this has morphed into a form of scrying for lack of a better term. At times like this, the camera is a sort of gazing ball, an extension of my mind more than anything else. I seldom even look at what I am shooting and mostly just point the camera in the direction where I sense the most energy. I'm not sure I'm even fully in control of the process. It seems as if turning off the analytical part of my mind allows some other force to fill in the void. This photo exemplifies that thinking (or lack thereof). It is a vision not merely of the effect of wind, rather of how it might feel to be the wind itself, flowing out over the the corn rows, answering to no-one. It's perfect in its imperfection.

A cold rainy day. I'll take the garbage out, but I'm not going to wander around out there with my camera.
I have a shot from Golden Ears Park. Maybe not that interesting to begin with? HDR'd. Three exposures merged in Photomatix. Processed the heck out of it in Lightroom. I read an article on Photoshop blur. I have been sitting inside for most of the day. I have a compulsion to post something to Flickr. I try the blur. Some further manipulations using Topaz Adjust. It probably qualifies for Slider Sunday, but it's only Monday evening. Here it is anyway! :-)

Compositionally, not an exhibition winning image I must agree; but still, to me, it is a defining picture of the annual progression to reproduction that sustains the populations of the countless number of species in our World.
Birds and animals ( including ourselves) on this, our small planet, lost in the vastness of the immense Universe in which we are merely the minutest of specks. ……………Driven by the power of Nature, mistakenly believing we have a choice…………………
