I found this scene compelling because it showed two extremely destructive forces - the effects of fire and the effects of mankind's machinery.

As you can tell, both threaten this magnificent old tree. The fire scorched the branches and the machinery is tearing away at the very ground the tree stands upon...

This is a high dyanmic range image which is comprised of three shots taken with a tripod on auto bracketing and blended with Photomatix software.

As with all HDR imagery, this image is better when viewed at the larger sizes.

Phoenix Custom's Endgame Iron Man arrived yesterday and I was compelled to whip out the ol'DSLR and take some shots at him!

I didn't exactly have a proper full-on "photoshoot" planned for him, but I suppose it was for the best because I may not have ever taken these cool images! Besides, whatever I may have had planned might've taken months to complete anyway! ...This took far less brain power and that's what's important... I think

Anyway, I was kind of trying to channel the vibes of an old shot I did almost eight years ago (GEEZ) with my very first Iron Man minifig... boy time sure does fly! :P

It may be old and overly edited, but it holds a dear place in my heart: flic.kr/p/cWgNpb

This figure is gorgeous in just about every way! It blows my mind so it's only fair that I gush about it a little so if you want more, check out Patreon or Insta! :)

Whatever compelled me to shoot this I don't know, and uploading it is just insane. I even tried cropping out the extremes to make a nicer image, but put 'em back cuz it felt wrong. Maybe I need help.

Personal log of crewman Beringeir Strauss (the sea Shrike) 5/29/61.

It has been some time since i've had time to sit down and write out my thoughts. i'm homeless now, my family is gone, my home, taken... a group of brigands calling themselves the Zalkutz or "ghost swarm" attacked my home, the peaceful village of Thillis. i was training with my father guardsman Roderick at the time. we were nearly done with our daily drills when the shouting started. my father told me to run home and barricade the doors. i didn't of course, i wanted to help. i thought i could at least use my magic to aid him from a distance, i watches as he joined wit the other guards and soldiers as they rallied against the attackers. they fought their hardest, but were overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of these bandits. i saw my father run though with a spear.... i ran, i wanted to get my mother Headmistress Lucinda Strauss from the school for the arcane arts. but when i reached the school it was already swarming with the Zalkuts! how did they get past the wards? the ward stones are inside the barriers, some one must have shattered one of them from the inside before the attack?!? a spy? a traitor? or just bad timing? i couldn't get into the school, i just home mother got out of there in time, but i don't think she would have just left her students so quickly...

After a few days hiding on the outskirts of town, dodging brigand patrols and occasionally take one or two stragglers out, i came to the realization they weren't just pillaging and moving on like pirates and bandits normally do, but they are occupying Thillis! defiling my home with their presence!... i've heard of a place that might have stones with enough arcane energy to act as a replacement ward stone. i just need to get there and back. i've met an archer, Vincent, he knows little of magic, but is a skilled combatant. together we found passage to this island, an illness of magical origin had ravaged the area. those affected by the illness were compelled to climb to the top of the island's mountain, once there they had their life force siphoned by an unseen malevolence. that is where i meet the crew of the sea shrike, a band of pirate hunters!

Together with the crew of the sea shrike, Vincent and i escorted the villagers back to their homes before resupplying and heading back up the the mountain. there we discovered the cause of the sickness, some sort of demonic entity had been imprisoned on that mountain, the arcane bonds that held her were weakening though, and she could now influence our realm. against my better judgment we shattered the stone that kept the infernal creature in check, releasing her into our world so we could put her down properly. it was a hard fight but we finally managed to kill the demon with no losses on our side. and i managed to recover a pice of the stone large enough to replace the once at the academy.

The Captain of the Sea Shrike a rather malodorous man named Phlub agreed to allow Vincent and myself join the crew. i agreed to work with them, even though i have the stone i needed, i still need allies as well as more power if i'm going to retake my home. the individuals i interact with most seem to be a good lot, i sometimes worry i will wake up in the reptilian one's mouth though. i've never been on the open ocean before, it's thrilling, but a bit terrifying too, i wish i had learned some spells that would help with the water, maybe i'll look into that at a later date. the first few days on the water were rather uneventful, until we were attacked by a pirate vessel! they called it the "Black Bride." it was much larger and more intimidating than the Sea Shrike. i heard some of the crew talking, they said a boarding party would be the best cause of action. so at the first chance i did just that, i wasn't expecting to be the first one on the enemy ship, now be alone for so long! thankfully the pirates swordsmanship was hardly what you could call..... competent. the greatest threat was the pirate mage, i used one of the first spells i learned and blasted her over-bored! i think she couldn't swim, because i never saw her again after that. i'm sure she wont be back anytime soon!

While myself and the other close range fighters were holding off the pirates aboard the black bride, the casters were taking shots from a distance, i was in the melee, so i didn't see what happened, i'm guessing an errant or well aimed fire spell hit some black powder kegs and ignited them, the explosion was had me reeling, my armor was scorched, my ears were ringing, my head was throbbing! i noticed the rest of my allies were jumping over-bored, so i followed, Lawrence, one of the other casters had transformed himself into a giant frog to carry us back to our ship. a second explosion sand the Black Bride as wer were climbing back aboard the Sea Shrike. the Capitan seemed pleased, he gave us a share of the loot as well as some of the bounty for sinking a pirate vessel. i was given some new armor, finely crafted! not my favorite color, but i'll get used to it. i also got a scroll containing a fascinating spell i've never seen before! it's still beyond my understanding, but i think i'm close to deciphering it! the others got their trinkets, weapons and potions too. we did lose out friend Jim though, i'll miss him, we played cards together just that morning, a shame, he was a great singer too.

As i write this we are about to make port for some repairs and shore leave. as long as we arent distracted by anything in the next few days, i'd like to get a few spell components, i do miss my little Klein....

well that's it for now. end of log!

I did quite a bit of "correcting" to this A.I. artwork... so does this now constitute as my "own" art?

----

Do you feel "betrayed" when (if) you found out a photo was an Artificial "photo"... are we getting used to being "lied" too..

I for one think we are blurring the future. Can we trust what we see? Do you accept this "new" way of looking at things?

Things are likely to become yet more complex as use of artificial intelligence by artists becomes more widespread, and as the machines get better at producing creative works, further blurring the distinction between artwork that is made by a human and that made by a computer.

(NOTE: on purpose I posted this also in "normal" portrait groups to get some reactions)

This little bush with bright yellow flowers compelled me to photograph it - all pretty in the bright noon sun. What made me shoot it not only in b&w, but in ortho, is beyond me.

But these basalt pillars, right? Right?

Right.

Exciting news - I've just released a brand new instructional eBook:

Sharper Images - A Guide For Nature Photographers!

For quite some time, I've wanted to compile a collection of my top tips surrounding the perennial hunt we photographers are on for razor sharp, detail-rich images. What started as a blog post snowballed into this in-depth guide.

Over the course of my 10 years behind a camera - 5 of those as a full time professional - I've honed my skills in some pretty challenging environments. Shooting in the deep, dark rainforests of British Columbia and the Neotropics has instilled in me the importance of technical proficiency. My aim with this publication is to provide an accessible, thorough overview of the difficulties presented to photographers, and the corresponding solutions that will aid those pursuing sharper results.

I'm confident this is one of the most beneficial ways any developing nature photographer can spend $25.

I hope you'll enjoy the read and that it will help you improve your craft, as well as expand your passion for spending time in the outdoors, chasing compelling images!

Despite getting up at ungodly hours on two different days to shoot the sunrise from some very tall buildings (no, no elevators), my favourite image from my long weekend in Detroit was taken on my way home when I stopped in Windsor to shoot the skyline.

Anyone who has spent any time in Detroit probably knows what I mean with my title. This is a city that is tragic, surviving, resilient, surprising and storied but, above all else, compelling.

Image for the Week 29 - Metal

theme calender: Let's Get Creative 2014!

I tried to see Metal as emotion. The first thing I thought of was strength. It is durable and is used for many things that have to do with power or other things where it has to prove itself.

On the other Hand I felt a Cold. It is not the temperature rather a silent cold.

An embracing Cold that holds you when you come in contact with it. A silent moment of coldness and strength.

First of all, what did you think of the new Star Wars?

I felt compelled to build this fully swingable Saber after seeing Kylo Ren's brilliant fear-inducing saber in the premiere for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The blade design was inspired by Cole Edmondson's saber which he has demonstrated in a fantastic video.

Let me know what you think.

Bahia Honda Rail Bridge ~ Stands Alone

109 Year-Old Decaying Bridge to Nowhere

The Florida Keys U.S.A. ~ December 6th, 2020

*[left-double-click for a closer-look - 5055' long - 24ft deep@center]

Bear with me. I felt compelled to do a series of shots of my favorite bridge in the world, with her magnificent colors of water and sky. I visit only once a year (for 46 straight years), and every time there is nobody here, leaving her and her ruins lonely and forgotten. I will never forget her beauty, or Henry Flagler. Thanks for looking.

The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge is a disused bridge in the lower Florida Keys connecting Bahia Honda Key with Spanish Harbor Key. Originally part of the Overseas Railway, the State of Florida purchased it after the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane and converted it to provide automobile use as part of the Overseas Highway in 1938. After a replacement Bahia Honda Bridge was opened in 1972, two spans of the bridge were removed (in the 80's) to accommodate boat traffic and make the majority of the bridge inaccessible to pedestrian traffic, but the rest remain standing.

It was originally built by Henry Flagler as part of the Overseas Railroad which was completed in 1912. Flagler funded the construction of the bridge, along with the rest of the railway himself. It was purchased by the state of Florida and converted for highway use in 1938 after the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. Rather than completely rebuilding the bridge after the hurricane, the existing structure was repaired and the deck for the Overseas Highway was added on top, as the existing deck inside the truss was too narrow for vehicular traffic. The bridge served as the primary mode of transport to the islands of the lower Keys, and as a primary evacuation route.

A new four-lane bridge was built in 1980, a few hundred yards north of the old bridge, replacing the old route of U.S. 1. Today, the former bridge provides a scenic overview of the area for tourists. Two of the truss spans have been removed in order to facilitate boat traffic, as the new bridge has an increased span height. The original bridge has fallen into a state of disrepair and signs have been posted on the bridge warning boat traffic to watch for falling debris, but all of the sections have remained standing (not counting the two that were removed). The easternmost section remains open to pedestrian traffic and is maintained by Bahia Honda State Park. Bahia Honda Rail Bridge ~ Spanish Harbor Key ~ Lower Keys

Og the beauty of a barren landscape, seen from above. Here you can see Hrútfell, a 1410 m high table mountain in the Icelandic highlands. It is located east of Langjökull Glacier and west of the Kjölur highland road. Similar to Herðubreið, it was under a glacier in the Ice Age.

I was compelled to do this fun shoot in the wake of my grandmother's death, these are her three of her great grandchildren. I wanted to cheer up the family with these bright images of a piece of her legacy <3

Not your typical Florida sunset, but a compelling sky just the same. Only a glimmer of sunlight managed to crack the horizon on this muggy and humid Friday evening.

Mull Head in Deerness, is a dramatic and compelling coastline situated on the north west of the Main Island of Orkney. Coastal sandstone plummets into the sea, scattered and broken by erosion.

At one point along the coastal route you can see a 360 degree view that takes in the North Sea towards Norway, the Northern Orkney Isles and the Linksness coast on the Main Island. It really is a breath-taking experience to perceive such a vast panorama at once evoking tranquility and inspiring awe.

The experience is not dissimilar to a cyclorama in a theatre giving an impression of a 360 degree landscape. Victorian art has also communicated similar ideas exhibiting paintings of a landscape in a circular room or hides that have been developed in rural areas that allow for 360 degree views.

The "Brough of Deerness" has a fascinating natural architecture where the sea has eroded the coastline to the point where a small outcrop of rock stands apart from the coast. There are also deep inlets carved out by the sea, such as "The Gloup", with steep walls and inhabited by a myriad of bird species.

Friends,

Today was my birthday so I felt compelled to get out and get a couple of shots in especially with some cloud cover in santa cruz. It looked promising but once arriving to my destination, I was a little disappointed with the outcome. Nevertheless, it was time to explore different vantage points. I am well aware that I broke a big rule of composition here by leaving the horizon in the middle. I wanted to include as much as the sky as possible and also include the rock on the bottom left which helps lead the eye. I guess rules are made to be broken once in a while. Have a great weekend everyone!!

A preview animation of the Super Moon Lunar Eclipse

On the evening of September 27, 2015 in the Americas (early morning on September 28 in Europe and most of Africa), the Moon enters the Earth’s shadow, creating a total lunar eclipse, the last of four visible in the Western Hemisphere in a span of 18 months. This animation shows the changing appearance of the Moon as it travels into and out of the Earth’s shadow.

Flawed picture I still find compelling. I have many versions of this scene, but none seem quite right. I'm posting this one because it captures the essence without overdoing it. Sometimes I'll post a picture and then put it aside until I can get a fresh take on the scene. Thats what I'm doing here.

Weeks after NASA's Parker Solar Probe made the closest-ever approach to a star, the science data from the first solar encounter is just making its way into the hands of the mission's scientists.

This image from Parker Solar Probe's WISPR (Wide-field Imager for Solar Probe) instrument shows a coronal streamer, seen over the east limb of the Sun on Nov. 8, 2018. Coronal streamers are structures of solar material within the Sun's atmosphere, the corona, that usually overlie regions of increased solar activity. The fine structure of the streamer is very clear, with at least two rays visible. Parker Solar Probe was about 16.9 million miles from the Sun's surface when this image was taken. The bright object near the center of the image is Mercury. The dark spots are a result of the data processing and are not actual physical features in the corona.

Every time I'm in the Liverpool area I feel compelled to visit Crosby Beach to see how Antony Gormley's sculpture, Another Place, is faring. On Monday morning the tide was way out, so all the iron men were exposed. I walked out quite a distance, but wasn't brave enough (or perhaps foolhardy enough) to go right out to the furthest sculptures. The sand can be treacherous and people sometimes get stuck in it and need to be rescued. I didn't fancy being a headline! This image shows just 3 of the 100 statues that make up the entire sculpture. Even covered in barnacles, as they are now, they're still an arresting sight.

Just felt compelled to capture the variety of colors, structures - while I prepared dinner during sunset hours. It is a mundane photo; shot through an open window - the fly net causing that weird but appropriate grid. Only slightly enhanced in Aperture2 to bring out the foreground and to straighten the horizon.

I'm not sure why I'm compelled to try this every year. They usually die before being planted, or eventually get eaten by some critter once in the ground. Every once in a while a few make it, like last year. I got a few hot pepper plants, and some basil survived to be mixed in with the greenhouse-started plants I bought later in the season. For now, its fun to watch them start, and I always hold out hope that they'll make it!

Sorry … but I just feel compelled to share this … only because of how it affected me so…made me more grateful … gave me some joy …. first off ... I'm just grateful that I had my pocket camera with me at the park yesterday afternoon … Gerry was sitting quiet and alone on the bench ... hunched over his cane ... I passed by and gave a nod … he responded in kind … and that somehow was enough confirmation to me that the Universe was aligned just right ... that I was enabled to overcome my natural timidity and summon the courage to ask to make his picture … and without a moment’s hesitation or any hint of distrust he agreed to let me do that … and when I got home and worked on the image I realized some things … I’m pretty sure it’s jolting ... but also welcome and affirming when a stranger approaches …. saying that you have such a good face…. and that he wants to capture that … it’s such a vulnerable position that I put him in … but at the same time that’s kinda offset by the unexpected interest and attention from a stranger in the park …. there's a lot that's happening in a thirty second one shot click of the camera … and... turns out that I love this portrait …really love it …. also kinda wonderful when the last image you make becomes your new favorite … so for me there’s a lot of confirmation and joy here … that I was able to make a new connection with another ..... and to then capture and create something that never existed in the world until yesterday afternoon …that touched something in my soul … and also at the same time hopefully gave Gerry some feeling that he didn’t go another day unnoticed, invisible and unappreciated (goes for me too)… anyway … thank you Gerry …. thank you Universe … and as always thanks to my friends here for again letting me express and share ….

Hard to believe that what ever is on this lady's phone is more compelling than the view before her . . . in actual fact I think she was reading a novel . . . a view, a brew and a read . . . what a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

Taken on our recent Famous Flickr Five photo walk at Barwon Heads . . . 'At The Heads' cafe is located on the Barwon Heads jetty and is home of the famous 'Sea Change' TV series from a number of years ago.

It is located at the waters edge where the Barwon River meets the sea and offers a full panoramic view extending from Barwon Bluff across to the heads of Port Philip Bay - encompassing a vista from shipping vessels entering and leaving the heads and bay, recreational fishing boats, fishermen throwing a casual line from the pier to families enjoying swimming and paddling, it has it all!

The food was delicious too too!

“Very good my creation. You have done exactly as I had planned. The elder orc will either go into hiding and I will have to start this cycle over or he will be steeled in his resolve… I of which would want him to do.” The Abomination’s understanding of his masters plan was limited but so was his understanding of anything. He often felt compelled to do things with out truly understanding how to do them until they were happening before him. At least two other voices would guide him. One was his master and one was the head on his masters staff. The latter of which would have him do things like eat or rest when his master was busy with other things. He was never alone…

“Another pieces has fallen into place which will be of our benefit on both sides. Prepare to receive company. Goblins are coming bearing gifts that will keep giving…” Day 3810 Y11D158

This absurd yet compelling set of etchings depicts four stages and rites of passage in the life of satyrs. In contrast to the classical image of goat means the personification of sexual excess, Baroque artists envisioned a socialized half-human close to nature, but progressively further from animal instincts. This is suggested here by the change in scenery from primeval forests to refined gardens.

All the stars in the heavens look down on us as we gaze up to them and we picture paint their points of light with icon figure that speak a symbolic language of myth and magic. If we are gathered around a fire at night then we can choose to appreciate the stars above as a thousand thousand campfires letting out their light to accompany us as we signal back with the light and warmth that we have readily available to share and to feel that we belong in an immense creation that we can envisage with love and with care.

*{About The Shot: I am compelled to tell the story of this early morning sunrise-shoot as it was like nothing else I've ever experienced as a seasoned cruiser. This was shot in 'sustained' 50mph winds with gusts up to 60-70mph! Shot through a slit in the glass of the viewing platform 12 decks up, the sunrise was directly in front of the bow. Myself and 2 others were the only photographers crazy enough to attempt this, and we could barely stand! We were laughing...but we got our shots. If the half-wall and glass were not there we would not have been able to stand-up. We had to anchor our cameras against the iron supports just to hold it steady. A tri-pod...forget it! I get up for every sunrise and try not to miss these opportunities (even though it was 7AM and I got to bed at 2:30AM!) LOL With the sun slightly off the port bow it tells me we are now steaming SE heading toward Grand Cayman, not yet visible on the horizon. - Would I do it again? You betcha!! Thanks for looking.]

Nessie loves everyone...

Disturbing and compelling...impossible to forget!

There is no compelling shot here,

just a moment in time.

Last summer I reserved a cabin to "go "fishing"

J came up

E came up with "my other son D"

I call him that because he's not my own really. He does have one of the best smiles I've ever seen.

It was windy that day, and later on I took video of J trying to knock E out of the boat.

Some things never change. Oh and when we all returned, My real son T, had smashed his face and broken his nose in a dirtbike race...life is funny that way.

Hope you don't mind too many flowers... Sorry for that my dear friends ! :-)

To choose the right dream, to compel the fate to lie, to hope that ephemeral things do not kill.

Choisir le bon rêve, faire mentir le hasard, espérer que l'éphémère ne tue pas.

My wife has this thing about ornate doorways. As a result, I find myself always compelled to take a picture of any unusual or aesthetically pleasing (well to me) doorway I come across - such was the case here. While I had walked past this door several times to and from our hotel, there was a pileup of leaves that the wind hadn't blown away on this particular evening. Enjoy!
