The vibrant orange color of this Zinnia flower compelled me to capture this image. It was only later that I discovered the bug nestled in the middle of it all. "Color provokes a psychic vibration. Color hides a power still unknown but real, which acts on every part of the human body."

There are so many twists and turns in these fibers of a bottle brush that I was compelled to make it my photographic subject. Here's to our often ignored kitchen utensils.

Another upload. Pls, do not feel compelled to comment. I have... too many photos and I need to release them and let them go free. I saw this just now, from last Saturday, and well, it is purple. And it is Saturday. Perfect, yes? YES.

This is my first not-dead hydrageosity!!

Blackified

The rare combination of a misty morning and full sun made for some compelling shots.

My Jacaranda tree at sunset last night. The sky has been on fire the past two evenings and as I’ve felt sad, I just looked on without capturing. But last night, I felt compelled to go out and take a snap with my phone. The colours were breathtaking and it reminded me of the forces greater than myself.

A lot of wildlife photographers will recognize the situation in which the subject is compelling, but the shooting conditions are crappy.

That's what happened here. The light was harsh and the subjects were down a steep embankment making it impossible to get a good shooting angle. But what we have here is a clash between a Marbled Godwit (right) and a Hudsonian Godwit (left). I couldn't resist posting shot of the rare nature moment. The two species didn't get along very well and entertained us with their squabbling for a few minutes. The outcome of the scuffle was a surprise. The smaller HG made a nifty move and jabbed its bill into the chest of the MG. That must have smarted and the bigger bird immediately left the vicinity.

This twofer is fifth in my shorebird series. One more tomorrow.

This photo was taken a few months ago. Happy Caturday.

Original comment: This is supposed to be a photo of Daisy waiting patiently on the windowsill above one of "her" radiators - but she looks very indignant! She was waiting for a meal or for me to sit down so she could sit on my lap.

Gadwalls have been described as displaying "understated elegance." I agree and also find them beautiful and compelling.

When you are compelled to follow a strong force, be careful where you step. It may be at your own peril.

This isn't a spectacular photo, but one that I felt compelled to post because the colors were just so brilliant on the Eastern side of the Great Sand Dunes along Medano Creek, especially along the Northern section on the Medano Pass Primitive Road near First Crossing. The sun had already peaked and was working it way towards a sunset, but hadn't as yet been masked in the creek by the dunes giving full lighting onto the creek bottom trees and shrubs, as well as, the Western mountain slop and casting some shadows onto the Eastern sloping of the dunes. The other reason for posting this image was to also mention how great it was to have perfectly dry feet while standing in the middle of this creek and after hiking in it for a good distance. I am a Keen professional and use their shoes and socks at work and in outdoor adventures. In this case I was waring a pair of Keen Targhee II waterproof shoes. True as advertised. Dry feet while stomping around in the creek. Also foot sweat was absence while hiking in the dunes and along trail. For the readers of this post, all I can say is that it is worth your while trying on a pair at a good quality outdoor gear store where there is a rocky testing area. You'll be amazed. Or check out their website at www.keenfootwear.com. One final note is that their socks are tagged as a right and left sock, which reduces the sock bunching in the toe socket of the shoe. There are certain places that you feel compelled to visit and photograph to the best of your ability and Bodiam Castle has long hovered somewhere around the top of my UK wish list for a good few years now.

I had an opportunity to visit it with a couple of friends of mine, Steve and June, on day 17 of my recent 26 day tour of the UK. We arrived a few minutes before sunset having just consumed a lovely meal in the Castle Inn pub across the road.

The colours were present on arrival and a quick set up of the wonderfully symmetrical castle (it must have been created for landscape photographers with a slight OCD tendency for symmetrical objects, lol) and it's beautiful wooden walkway to the front of the castle. We were treated to some wonderful subtle colours in the sky and this was one of those moments where I just stood there drinking in the happy feelings in finally ticking this castle off my list.

I hope you all like the photo and have a great weekend everyone.

There is something quite magical about being alone on a deserted beach pre-dawn. Whilst the actual sunrise was hidden behind thick cloud, the beauty of the Atlantic sweeping across a pristine beach is still compelling.

The granite coastline here at Porthcurno on Englands SW Tip is also a fabulous spot for landscape images. The rock structure and the headland of Treryn Dinas make wonderful subjects for photography.

Without a doubt the most photographed view of downtown Boston, but one you feel compelled to try if you're in the neighborhood. Best attempted on a cold winter morning (like this one) when you'll likely have the place mostly to yourself. This was taken just before the B&W version I posted way back. I've learned a few things in the interim, like how to use the Nik Collection and correct for lens distortion in Lightroom.

For a variety of reasons photography has not been in the cards for me of late. Looking forward to getting back into the swing in the near future (hopefully). My apologies for being largely absent from your photostreams.

Filters: Landscape polarizer, 1-stop soft-edge GND, 10-stop ND.

Tidbits: Directly behind me is the Moakley Federal Courthouse, headquarters for the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and venue for some recent high profile trials, including that of mobster James "Whitey" Bulger, and surviving Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Winter is upon us yet I am compelled to share this photo from May 2019, as we rode through the Polish countryside on our way to Zakopane. It was my turn that early morning on the tour coach to be seated in front with full unobstructed views through the large windshield. A mild rain was falling and as the wipers passed I took the shot and upon upload I liked the deep satuated colors and details in the landscape, so although Spring is off in the distance for a number of months I can still feel that early seasonal change when I look at this, your comments welcome as always.

I would not be comfortable standing on one.....but a compelling pattern in downtown San Francisco.

When I arrived here last April there was a large branch laying in the wash. I thought someone left their walking stick and began to shoot it as I found it. Not long after, a couple other branches shot out from the falls onto the sandstone and I realized the forest was doing a little spring cleaning via this small stream feeding Superior. I cannot recall ever "tweaking" a landscape for a photograph, but in this instance I felt compelled to remove them. I had driven a ways to get here and wanted a couple shots without any clutter on what is otherwise an absolutely pristine shoreline.

That's never compelled me. There has to be something that pulls me in; I have to have a reason to press the shutter. I think that there's something essential about the impulse to record something; I don't take pictures just to take pictures. There has to be something about a place or a person that I recognize, that I need to record or remember or think about again :-)

Funny how I feel compelled to take photos of squirrels whenever I'm out and about when there are plenty of squirrels in my own yard. But this little fellow caught my attention when he scampered up this tree and then started fussing at us when we passed by.

He was not happy at all, and did not hesitate in the least to let us know! Apparently some squirrels just don't like paparazzi in any shape or form.

I’ve posted his image before… but just re-worked another that I wanted to share along with the throwback memory … this was one of my first street portraits … I’d been carrying the camera for several days … but was just too timid to make a shot … …. was just so against my nature and habit to approach strangers on the street and ask to make their picture …. but … he was standing in the queue … his nyc bus was approaching ... seconds away … I was struck by his presence … compelled to capture that .... and the portrait was in my head before I made the shot …. happily he let my camera borrow his face … all these years later my only regret is that I didn’t give my contact ... never able to share with him the image ….it remains one of my favorites … at least I can share it here with you ….

Captures from one of my favorite locations in New York City, Grand Central Station. The architecture, the lighting, the mood, the people; the entire environment add up to a compelling and unique environment for photography.

Opposing steep grades make for a compelling photograph as Utah Railway's 'Wattis Turn' goes about its business at the Wattis coal mine on a sunny Aug. 13, 1985 morning. The BN F45s and SP SD45 were on lease from NRE, and had only been loading coal in Utah for four months.

Fitting the moody weather today.

so that you really want to know what they mean—because they deserve knowing—and you can’t find out, that really keeps you interested in them :-)

I'm compelled to talk about this image. It comes from the morning I blew the harrier series with a disastrous slow shutter by not checking the starting camera settings. I was pretty miffed, to say the least. So, I put my head back on and went over the settings. Now, I'm on this dirt back road, along the ponds and reeds of this special wildlife area. There are a lot of harriers here, as well as Red-tailed Hawks and with luck young Bald Eagles. So, the raptor gods smiled on me and gave me another chance. I was still out of the car, scanning the fields, hoping. And along comes this harrier, straight down the road toward me. Seriously? This is a young harrier, chest is really buff though not so obvious here. That comes 20 or 30 frames later. 😉

Most dogs like to run this way and then that way. Tidda's favorite direction, however, is UP. She's a true mountaineer at heart as she feels compelled to summit everything in sight. That can be a bench, a picnic table, a tree stump or large log, a boulder or the current 20-foot cliffs of sand where the dunes have been cut in half by winter tides. She will somehow jump and climb her way to the top in quite amazing ways.

But I don't encourage her to do this - because the problem is that once she has reached the top, she likes to jump back down in one death-defying leap! I worry because she lands with such force that she can't help doing a face plant in the sand! (See first comment.) Afterwards she just runs along like nothing happened.

So a major thing to know about Tidda is that she truly enjoys performing stunts in the vertical dimension!

I can't help it, I never was a RULES person...This humming bird could be cropped, chopped, and actually have a very plain background , certainly without dying or worse dead flowers in it....but I love the textures, the vibrant purple of the butterfly bush, AND the russet browns of the dying /dead ones...that is nature to my eyes...the juxtaposition of life/new growth/old growth. Of course I do grow weeds for bees, save weeds for dried flowers cuz I love the look...what can I say~~?

Out of the city; back to the country. I stopped the car to shoot a group of trees, but found this composition more compelling. Seen in County Mayo, Ireland.

No?

No, or, ... how will I

put this? Maybe, yet, yes.

Or otherwise, at some times.

My opinion has difficulty

to hold out, in front of

a compelling look.

Confronted by a posture that

indicates an unyielding character.

Before, there was little doubt

that a wall has two sides,

an inner and an outer side,

and an upper side, of course,

although that is beyond the scope

of this consideration.

But now . . . now no stone

will stick to another,

and no concrete resists

the gnawing of

an unsecure mind.

I understand that some people fully embrace flowers with no scent. However, every time I find myself near a rose, I'm compelled to see if there is a sweet fragrance within the folds of the petals. This bright red rose did not disappoint me today. Thank you, little rose buddy!

“Deep in the forest a call was sounding, and as often as he heard this call, mysteriously thrilling and luring, he felt compelled to turn his back upon the fire and the beaten earth around it, and to plunge into the forest, and on and on, he knew not where or why; nor did he wonder where or why, the call sounding imperiously, deep in the forest.”

Jack London, The Call of the Wild

The walia ibex (Capra walie, Ge'ez: ዋልያ wālyā) is an endangered species of ibex. It is sometimes considered a subspecies of the Alpine ibex. Threats against the species include habitat loss, poaching, and restricted range; only about 500 individuals survived in the mountains of Ethiopia, concentrated in the Semien Mountains, largely due to past poaching and habitat depletion. If the population were to increase, the surrounding mountain habitat would be sufficient to sustain only 2,000 ibex. The adult walia ibex's only known wild predator is the hyena. However, young ibex are often hunted by a variety of fox and cat species. The ibex are members of the goat family, and the walia ibex is the southernmost of today's ibexes. In the late 1990s, the walia ibex went from endangered to critically endangered due to the declining population. The walia ibex is also known as the Abyssinian ibex. [source: wikipedia.com]

Today, I feel sadness for all the hate, power, greed, and selfishness that is going on in this world, and I feel compelled to address the situation with my work. I plead with all people, from the top to the bottom, to stop and think about the cruelty of what is happening in our world. We are all part of humanity and should be treated with dignity. The purpose of life is to live and let live, not to dictate and undermine people. We are all important human beings and should be treated as such. Life is better and happier when we treat each other with love, friendship, and acceptance and enjoy our diversity.

With heartfelt and genuine thanks for your kind visit. Have a beautiful day, be well, keep your eyes open, appreciate the beauty surrounding you, enjoy creating, and stay safe! ❤️❤️❤️

Compositionally Challenged Week 40 - Compelling Composition

#16 Compelling

View On Black

My trip to Liverpool last week included a morning spent at Crosby Beach, a 20 minute train ride from the city centre. The attraction of Crosby Beach is Antony Gormley's "Another Place" art installation which includes 100 cast-iron figures of Gormley's own nude body. Some are nearer the edge of the beach and stay mostly out of the water. Others, nearer the water's edge, can be completely submerged at high tide. I went early morning when the beach was for the most part empty, save for a few dog walkers.

To be honest I found it quite difficult to get a compelling composition. I took a lot of pictures that morning and having looked through them all there aren't many keepers. This one however appealed to me. I like the stark nature of it and it makes me think of these figures still there in fifty or a hundred years, long after I've left this earth. They'll still be there, in the exact same positions, looking out at exactly the same view.
