While not the best photo, I felt compelled to post this because of the story it tells. We were walking along the beach on Sanibel Island when I noticed a mother snowy plover keeping a watchful eye as her three chicks scurried about on the sand. The snowy plover is a State-designated threatened species as recognized by the state of Florida. It nests in the sand along the beach and as such faces much danger from development and the sheer numbers of people and pets that walk along the shore. The statistical threat is so great that less than one of these three will survive to adulthood.
The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Fund (SCCF) does a tremendous amount of work to search out and protect snowy plover nests as well as many other conservation efforts. Their website can be found at www.sccf.org/. Through their efforts and better public awareness and education we can hope that the plover population can stabilize.
Thanks you or your comments and views!
This picture, in and of itself is really not compelling. There is a story to it though.
I was wading out into the little lagoon to take a picture of the lone plant nestled in the rock. I thought it would be cool.
I took a couple of shots and headed back.
I was walking in the water up to my knees or so. The water temperature was about 80 degrees.
I was mindful that cameras and water do not mix - obviously- so I was being extra special careful. Strap around my neck. Camera cradled tightly against me.
Smiling I was because I felt daring.
Then all of a sudden I felt the worst pain in my toe. My first thought was Oh my god I was just stung by something poisonous and now I am going to die without making it home.
Hence I cursed very loudly. The ensuing dance was not graceful at all.
I thrashed my foot about trying to rid it of the sharp pain. I couldn't yet see the source.
As I hobbled to the beach, swearing and oblivious to the entertainment I had become, the pain seemed worse.
As I repeatedly banged my foot on to the sand ( I really don't know why I did that) I saw the body of something go flying off to the left.
I looked down and there it was, still attached to my third toe, a crab arm, with it's pincher doing it's job, sans body.
I reached down and pulled it off and flung it. I noticed right away I had flung it right at a nice lady in front of me who was kind enough to come to my aid.
She asked me if I was ok, I said yes, apologized for throwing the disattached limb at her and thanked her for her concern. I was not sure my dignity survived but at that moment I could not have cared less.
I never lost hold of my camera and I only briefly looked about to see who was amused by my performance. Either everyone was being kind or they didn't see a damn thing. No one was looking at me. Giggling, I tried to slink away.
I hobbled back to where my friend was reading in our hut.
I must admit I was dissapointed, she didn't see any of it. I laughed that relieved, embarassed, just don't care laugh. You know the one that brings tears to your eyes.
By the way, it was a really small crab.
I am late getting today's second instalment up - photo #6, one shot per year for a 15-year period during my backpacking days - because I mysteriously felt compelled to run out with my camera this afternoon. Despite the wind and snow pellets, I knew there were some wildflowers that wanted their pictures taken. After that I was wiped out and needed a nap.
Back in the days when I had more energy, such as the summer of 1980 when I snapped this photo, wildflowers were a favourite subject. On this day, my hiking partner Pauline and I found meadows filled with them, near Whistler, British Columbia. It was early August, and the yellow, blue, and white - of arnica, lupine, and mountain valerian - had swept these lush subalpine meadows in a fragrant wave. Our packs weren't heavy; this was merely an overnighter. The hike wasn't demanding; we took the ski lift up to the top and after that it was just rolling hills. Somehow we were alone, camping near the spectacular Overlord Glacier. In the background of this shot is the Black Tusk, a volcanic spike that I had climbed the previous year (yes, to the very top - not as difficult as it looks from here). Singing Pass is reputedly named for the alpine breeze that tickles its slopes, including nearby Piccolo, Flute, and Oboe Summits. Today you pay to camp here, you pay to use the lift if it's open, everything is tightly regulated. I get it. These easily accessible places are under siege from overuse. Glad I was there in the good old days.

This extraordinary image from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope of the galaxy cluster Abell 2813 has an almost delicate beauty, which also illustrates the remarkable physics at work within it. The image spectacularly demonstrates the concept of gravitational lensing.
Among the tiny dots, spirals, and ovals that are the galaxies belonging to the cluster, there are several distinct crescent shapes. These curved arcs of light aren’t curved galaxies. They are strong examples of a phenomenon known as gravitational lensing.
Gravitational lensing occurs when an object’s mass causes light to bend. The curved crescents and “S” shapes are light from galaxies that lie beyond Abell 2813. The galaxy cluster has so much mass that it acts as a gravitational lens, bending light from more distant galaxies around it. These distortions can appear as many different shapes, such as long lines or arcs.
This visual evidence, that mass causes light to bend, is famously used as proof of Einstein’s theory of general relativity.
The image is a compilation of observations taken with the Hubble Space Telescope’s Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3.

Because I like building dragons with minifigures in front of 'em. ;)
I tried to build a compelling story with the two kids behind the rock in this image. Lots of delicate bits in this creation for sure--the baby for starters, don't know how many times I had to redo that wrapping, then too the snow is one of those things that only sticks together when every piece is in place, and then the dragon... I think that fell apart 4 times on the photography table, and it's one of those things where fixing one bit seems to knock another one off... well, anyways, here's the picture at last. Oh, and did I mention that I lost an hour worth of editing when GIMP died on me? Maybe I should have called this effort instead of courage!
I used nets to get the wings to hang. I think it's a technique that has more potential, the structure here wasn't stable enough for me to really stretch and mold it like I'd have liked to. Anyway, check out the bts shots on Insta!

So, one from the archives here, taken back in february.
I felt oddly compelled to do a bit of selective colouring with this frame (full mono in comments). Personally, I think I prefer this full monochrome image although I always enjoy a bit of selective colouring when applied well. Just not sure if it works in this instance.

“A.I. - About Apple’s Identity”

### Will Apple Listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s Criticism?
I Don’t Think So—At Least Not for Someone Enchanted by the Apple Vision Pro.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently appeared on a well-known podcast, where he criticized Apple for failing to release an innovative product since the iPhone and for experiencing a decline in sales.
Appearing on a podcast originating from Apple and then proceeding to criticize the company might seem like a lighthearted joke, but I believe he was serious.
Why? Because he now wields a weapon—the AR glasses.
With the support of various institutions and a team of highly skilled professionals, he has likely achieved some notable milestones. Yet, as someone who has been a devoted Apple user since the PowerBook 540c, I still do not sense any real craftsmanship or identity in what he creates.
This sentiment extends to other IT giants that currently dominate the world—Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.
Just by listing their names, readers of this text are likely already picturing their respective CEOs.
In the past, I wrote that Steve Jobs was not an artist.
What he excelled at was weaving together scattered ideas from across the world, expanding upon them, and linking them to the future.
The true creator was Jonathan Ive.
A minority of people may share this perspective with me.
However, when I see these IT moguls quickly shifting their corporate stances the moment the possibility of Trump returning to power emerges, I feel compelled to speak my mind.
The AR glasses, the cars—everything they create lacks a fundamental concept.
Call it ideology or, in lighter terms, identity.
It is true that Tim Cook and Apple’s current team have become more prone to letting slip details about upcoming products before their official release.
I have always loved music.
Artists shut themselves in a studio, cutting off the outside world, pouring their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow into each note with intense focus.
It’s as if they are entrusting something to their music.
And when they finally release their album, they explain the emotions and thoughts behind its creation.
(Prince, whom I admire, rarely spoke about his work, so understanding his art required engaging with the final product itself.)
Until an album is complete and released, artists say nothing.
It was those artists who moved me to my core.
The faint glow of Apple’s innovation still remains within me.
Not even last year’s widely criticized "failure"—the Apple Vision Pro—could extinguish it.
In fact, it shines even brighter than the iPhone.
Because beyond its cutting-edge electronic components, I can sense a concept, an ideology.
Unfortunately, I will never feel the same from Meta’s AR glasses or Tesla’s cars.
I have written at length, but here is the key article:
**Tim Cook Donates Over $1.5 Million to Trump’s Inauguration Ceremony**
🔗 [Gigazine Article](gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...)
At first glance, this might make it seem like Tim Cook, like other tech CEOs, has sold his soul. But that is not the case.
While Cook personally donated to Trump, Apple itself did not follow the same path as other companies.
Apple refused to bow to Trump.
If asked what Apple’s ideology truly is, I would answer this:
**Apple is a group of individuals who believe in themselves.**
Steve Jobs, watching from heaven, is probably chuckling at this overly serious text I wrote.
A company that does not pander to Trump—
That is Apple. :)

8mm film of our honeymoon resurrected after decades.
youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp
We found the 8mm film of our honeymoon for the first time in decades, and burned it onto a DVD.
On June 6, 1993, we got married, and headed straight to Nassau, Bahamas, via New York.
Our destination was the pink sand beach where the late Princess Diana went on her honeymoon.
If you're heading to the Bahamas, this might be a good reference.
The hotel we stayed at was the Ramada Hotel, which no longer exists.
My wife is showing us the hotel room.
But now you can see the beautiful scenery in real time.
When I played the DVD that arrived, it showed footage of our arrival in the Bahamas.
Please take a look if you'd like.
This time, we asked Fujifilm to make the DVD.
I'll post the link below.

Notice regarding "Lot No.402_”.
From now on I will host "Lot No.402_".
The work of Leonardo da Vinci who was sleeping.
That is the number when it was put up for auction.
No sign was written on the work.
So this work couldn't conclude that it was his work.
However # as a result of various appraisals # it was exposed to the sun.
A work that no one notices. A work that speaks quietly without a title.
I will continue to strive to provide it to many people in various ways.

### **Synopsis**
Kei Kitami, a student preparing for university entrance exams, meets Kaori Kamimura, an event companion six years his senior, through social media.
Kaori has come to Tokyo with a dream—to befriend famous artists.
To achieve this, she needs the influence of Ryo Osawa, a well-known radio producer.
During a live radio broadcast, Osawa speaks directly to Kaori:
*"I have a wife and child. But still, I want to see you."*
Meanwhile, Rika Sanjo, Kei’s classmate who secretly harbors feelings for him, is closely watching Kaori’s every move...

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

“” A.I. アップルのアイデンティティについて””
www.flickr.com/photos/stealaway/54271473379/in/dateposted...
gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...

youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp

Sedona, Arizona has often been associated with spiritual energy and other benefits of the supernatural realm, that’s a bit above my capability to understand. What attracted me to Sedona was the desert landscape and the amazing sunsets that happens routinely here. So, when we decided to make a trip to Sedona, I wanted to cover the Cathedral Rock from as many viewpoints as possible.
Most of the viewpoint is located near the crescent moon ranch but the best photo from the trip came from a roadside pullout. We were late getting to a viewpoint and en-route I saw a good view of the Cathedral Rocks and I decided to opt for the roadside pullout rather than the planned viewpoint. The decision was driven by some of the best light that I have seen in a while. The foreground was a bit busy, but I believe the subject and the light more than made up for it.
I felt compelled to post a photo with a bit more color. Much like the Grand Canyon, the hills of the Painted Desert National Park display themselves differently with the location of the sun and degree of cloud cover. The park also provides a sense of the wide open spaces of the American West.
The Painted Desert is part of the Painted Desert / Petrified Forest National Park and is located in the northeastern part of the state of Arizona.

I feel compelled to stay in Sri Lanka for awhile perhaps to offer support for the grieving country. Given all of the horrific news out of the country at this time, I think it is only fair to counteract it with images that show the true nature of sights and scenes from the tiny island.
This little money is a Toque Monkey. They have tufts of unruly hair on their head. They are also called temple moneys because the live and play through out the beautiful ruins of ancient cities and the magnificent temples found on the island. This little one was in more of a jungle setting and has found some wonderful treats to snack on.

Yes, the ATL did receive a bit of snow yesterday, but it was very anti-climactic (at least in our part of town), so great snow-related shots were nil to none.
However, as the grey sky gave way to broken clouds, wind, and much colder temps, I could see an amazing sunset was in the works. As it stood, I had a Scout Leader meeting at the same time the show was taking place; so, this shot and (quite a few others) were quickly taken from the parking lot of the building where the meeting was held. Lightroom 2 was used to make this pop a bit, but the base image was as compelling to me.
Late last year a French military aircraft faced engine troubles during its journey from Kiruna to France, compelling an emergency landing at Stockholm Arlanda airport. The C-130 Hercules plane encountered problems with two out of its four engines, necessitating the immediate diversion to Arlanda. You can clearly see the outer engines is flared. The plane stayed until late january.
View On Black please. It looks better there.
I apologize for not doing something creative today.... But I guess I do quite like this because it actually means quite a lot to me, the concept that is.
I got that quote from this Facebook page I saw, and yes, if you're on my Facebook I apologize for joining about 156 pointless, stupid fanpages in the past few days.
I really wanted to do something fairytale inspired but let's just say I'm tired, seriously lacking of ideas and extra extra busy! This week will be the last week that I'm considered a "year one". I really really hope I can finish my assignments >< Sigh. This module has taken a serious toll on me, emotionally especially. I'm really glad I've got the support of really special people =3
The makeup is actually something I tried on very long ago.. I used to have that photo on my Flickr but I deleted it, it was like one of the first few photos I ever posted and it was so shitty, grainy and taken with a 2megapixel cellphone camera.
(explored thanks!<3)
I was shooting landscapes in the pre-dawn (and post-dawn) light; Lower Kananaskis Lake was mirror-smooth and a compelling subject. Moments before the sun began to lick those mountain peaks with gold, however, I turned my attention to some dense willow thickets nearby. They were exploding with seeds. The air was perfectly still and frost rimmed each leaf. I set the tripod up quickly and made a few shots before running down to the lake shore to catch the spreading light.
I hadn't planned this shot, and was half convinced that I might be wasting my time, but it has always been my belief that if an idea or an image comes unbidden, it may be worth pursuing. At the very least, it keeps my mind fluid and flexible. And occasionally what I find turns out better than what I was chasing.

SUNRISE at Sea ~ very windy photo-shoot from the top-deck
Just north-west of the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean Sea
*{About The Shot: I am compelled to tell the story of this early morning sunrise-shoot as it was like nothing else I've ever experienced as a seasoned cruiser. This was shot in 'sustained' 50mph winds with gusts up to 60-70mph! Shot through a slit in the glass of the viewing platform 12 decks up, the sunrise was directly in front of the bow. Myself and 2 others were the only photographers crazy enough to attempt this, and we could barely stand! We were laughing...but we got our shots. If the half-wall and glass were not there we would not have been able to stand-up. We had to anchor our cameras against the iron supports just to hold it steady. A tri-pod...forget it! I get up for every sunrise and try not to miss these opportunities (even though it was 7AM and I got to bed at 2:30AM!) LOL With the sun slightly off the port bow it tells me we are now steaming SE heading toward Grand Cayman, not yet visible on the horizon. - Would I do it again? You betcha!! Thanks for looking.]

This sign, with Biblical roots reflects a sentiment to care for those less fortunate. Even when we might be afraid, we must feel compelled to be kind to immigrants and refugees. We must also look to those living in poverty without health care and those with disabilities. We must fight for those less fortunate.
I am glad to see some of those who identify themselves as Christian are speaking out against Trump. It's pretty incredible that someone who wants to take away healthcare from 22+ millions of Americans to reward the top 400 wealthiest families could be considered Christian.
I grew up with both Methodism and Catholicism and nowhere did Jesus ever say in the Bible, "Screw the poor, let the rich take over the world!" Nope...just wasn't there. Here's a recent article on the religious left speaking out:
www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-religion-idUSKBN16Y114
In more recent news, Trump and co. have scammed people, including those living in poverty to give charitable donations which ended up just benefiting the rich yet again.
Trump, in his continually callous and damaging behavior towards people with illnesses and disabilities shifted funds for children with Cancer into his own profit:
www.forbes.com/sites/danalexander/2017/06/06/how-donald-t...
Even more recently, his lawyer Jay Sekulow scammed people into giving charitable donations just to make himself and his family richer.
www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/donald-trump-la...
I don't know how anyone can defend such actions, personally. I don't necessarily consider myself a Christian but I try to live a life of kindness towards others. What I do know is that these actions are appalling.

There is a compelling moment that occurs when you finally accept forgiveness. A sense of acceptance of your existence occurs; you may be alone or you may not but everything negative seems to wash away. All at once the world seems hewn in perfect strokes of color like a masterful painting. It is in that moment when you are truly ready to move forward.
I have been so busy recently that I haven't worked on a photo in over a month. I finally got around to starting to process some pictures I took on a recent trip to South Dakota. This is one of my favorite abandoned houses. It is my muse and every time I think I can just drive by it I feel compelled to stop and take an hour to shoot it. I had my 590 converted IR 5D with me this time which gave me a very different way of "seeing" this amazing place.
Photo taken in the Immersive room (1000 m² screens) during the 360º projection of Gustav Klimt's most compelling works.
Using technological marvels and gigantic projections, visitors to this expo were completely immersed in the world of Gustav Klimt.
More than 200 works by Gustav Klimt were projected in an animated, creative and surprising way all around you.
Gustav Klimt (14 July 1862 – 6 February 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt is noted for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other objets d'art. Klimt's primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism. Amongst his figurative works, which include allegories and portraits, he painted landscapes. Among the artists of the Vienna Secession, Klimt was the most influenced by Japanese art and its methods. [Wikipedia]
Gerda Weissmann Klein endured three years across various Nazi concentration camps. In the latter part of January 1945, Gerda, along with 4,000 other Jewish women, was compelled to undertake a 350-mile death march to escape the advancing Allied forces.
By the beginning of May, Gerda was among the mere 120 women who had survived. The remainder, including several childhood friends, had perished due to exhaustion, starvation, arbitrary executions, and exposure to harsh weather conditions.
Gerda was just one day away from her 21st birthday when she was liberated by American soldiers. Weighing merely 68 lbs. (30.84 kg), her hair had turned almost white, her garments were ragged and infested with lice, and she had not bathed in three years.
She later recounted the moment she saw the man who would save her life:
"I was standing in the doorway of that factory, aware that I was free. I noticed an unfamiliar vehicle descending the hill, adorned with the white star of the American army on its bonnet. Two men in unfamiliar uniforms were seated inside, whom we presumed to be Americans. One of the men approached me, and I gazed at him with a mix of immense admiration and disbelief, realising I was facing someone who had fought for our cause. Naturally, I was profoundly scared. I told him, 'we are Jewish.' After a lengthy pause, he replied, 'so am I.' That was the most extraordinary moment of my life. He invited me to accompany him, courteously holding the door open for me. I feel compelled to take photos of snow when we have it, as it doesn't seem to happen as much anymore.
Ah yes, the mask compels you to revel in it's power! Do you take it? Shall you wear it? Who shall you become in the Masquerade once it rests upon your visage?
1.First of December. I felt compelled to write you something but I don't know what. There's so much going on in my life right now that I don’t think words are sufficient. What I want to tell you, you would have to come and find me in the library lit by the twilight sun. We will grab coffee then take a walk outside into the cold. In silence we will feel the friction between our thick coats, our hands dangling on our side but never touch. Our eyes look but never meet…There are things that can’t be said in words, you know. There are also things that best left to be felt.

Every November, I cringe inside as once again it’s time for you to become the subject of jokes and mockery. From newscasters to neighbors, everyone feels compelled to find humor in the central role you occupy in the Thanksgiving holiday, in which I find none. It is inconvenient that you are a magnificent bird. Tendrils of empathy that may sprout in young children’s hearts are quickly doused with the herbicide of ridicule. We only know you as a caricature.
That is why I will never forget the first time I met you and discovered the true depth of your dignity. That was in Florida, but yesterday I met you the first time in Oregon and it was the same. I spotted a group of 8 dark figures foraging through a field and was immediately mesmerized and astonished by your beautiful iridescence. The patterns and stripes of your feathers are incredibly intricate. Mother and some aunties were caring for a group of almost-adults. You were so patient and attentive with each other, staying close together, coordinating through a continuous conversation of soft clucks and purrs.
In watching you, I became one of you, in my imagination, and I felt I could trust you. You would not abandon me, you would warn me of danger, we would all stay together. I felt I had briefly shared in a benevolent consciousness. It left me feeling at peace. I’ve had a special love for you since the moment we first met. But there is something else about you that is profoundly moving, something about the shape of your body, the angle of your back when you run and about your ancestors: Watching you is likely much closer to seeing a living dinosaur than any of us ever expected we could get. How thrilling is that? It gives me shivers and makes my eyes well up with emotions that have no words.
Be the most sophisticated and interesting bird I know!

109 Year-Old Decaying Bridge to Nowhere
The Florida Keys U.S.A. ~ December 6th, 2020

Bear with me. I felt compelled to do a series of shots of my favorite bridge in the world, with her magnificent colors of water and sky. I visit only once a year (for 46 straight years), and every time there is nobody here, leaving her and her ruins lonely and forgotten. I will never forget her beauty, or Henry Flagler. Thanks for looking.
The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge is a disused bridge in the lower Florida Keys connecting Bahia Honda Key with Spanish Harbor Key. Originally part of the Overseas Railway, the State of Florida purchased it after the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane and converted it to provide automobile use as part of the Overseas Highway in 1938. After a replacement Bahia Honda Bridge was opened in 1972, two spans of the bridge were removed (in the 80's) to accommodate boat traffic and make the majority of the bridge inaccessible to pedestrian traffic, but the rest remain standing.
It was originally built by Henry Flagler as part of the Overseas Railroad which was completed in 1912. Flagler funded the construction of the bridge, along with the rest of the railway himself. It was purchased by the state of Florida and converted for highway use in 1938 after the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. Rather than completely rebuilding the bridge after the hurricane, the existing structure was repaired and the deck for the Overseas Highway was added on top, as the existing deck inside the truss was too narrow for vehicular traffic. The bridge served as the primary mode of transport to the islands of the lower Keys, and as a primary evacuation route.
A new four-lane bridge was built in 1980, a few hundred yards north of the old bridge, replacing the old route of U.S. 1. Today, the former bridge provides a scenic overview of the area for tourists. Two of the truss spans have been removed in order to facilitate boat traffic, as the new bridge has an increased span height. The original bridge has fallen into a state of disrepair and signs have been posted on the bridge warning boat traffic to watch for falling debris, but all of the sections have remained standing (not counting the two that were removed). The easternmost section remains open to pedestrian traffic and is maintained by Bahia Honda State Park. Bahia Honda Rail Bridge ~ Spanish Harbor Key ~ Lower Keys
