My wife's family hunting camp when she was young. It's for an entire family that go there at hunting season and Thanksgivings. The camp is actually pretty neat and is great for family bonding time.

"We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men."

“Community is first and foremost a gift of the Holy Spirit, not built upon mutual compatibility, shared affection, or common interests but upon having received the same divine breath, having been given a heart set aflame by the same divine fire, and having been embraced by the same divine love.”

—Henry Nouwen

Once again, Hummingbird spread its wings to the surrounding communities.

A recent development of the Hummingbird Project started last year during school holidays, Beija-Flor na Comunidade or Hummingbird in the Community, literally means that we take most of the activities from our Hummingbird Arts and Cultural Activity Centre to the children and young people in surrounding communities instead of them coming to us.

The programme is an important step towards implanting smaller nuclei in underprivileged communities, from where the populations have limited access to our regular Activity Centre, either due to distance, safety or lack of transport. Another important reason for the project is to facilitate the reproduction of our prevention methodology by youth community mobilisers and mentors trained at Hummingbird; Everyone a Changemaker.

See the slideshow from last year's programme.

Formerly known as the Chesley Centennial Park this greenspace is over 2 acres in size, the largest park in the community. The park is protected forever from urban development as part of the condition of bequeathing it to the town. The park includes a river (where many of us learned to swim), skateboard park, 4 ball diamonds, playground, splash pad, picnic areas, modern swimming pool and tobagganing hill.

Communal gardens in Shoreditch, London ...

A man eats a tomato from his garden plot at the Shafter Community Garden, a project of the Center for Race, Poverty & the Environment. The garden is located in between two close neighbors - the Sequoia Elementary School on it's south side, and the North Shafter Oil Field on it's north. Residents are concerned for the future of the garden and the school due to the increased fracking activity in the nearby oil field.
