The priest gives the bread, become the Body of Christ, to a sister. Another sister is ministering the cup.
"Since all the faithful form one body, the good of each is communicated to the others... We must therefore believe that there exists a communion of goods in the Church" – St Thomas Aquinas.
Today is the Solemnity of All Saints, and my sermon for today can be read here.
Stained glass detail from Harvington Hall of St Nicholas Owen praying to Our Lady.
Girl in Communion dress.
Scanned from glass negative.
On the original glass negative, on the glass side, there were fragments of red dye around
the girl's face; this dye must have functioned to harmonize her skin tones with the rest of the photograph.
But I have no idea why there would been this difference in the first place.
Late 1920's, early 1930's.
I wasn't going to post this as the quality of the shot is not up to scratch very soft, but I couldn't let this year go by without one shot of our local Bluebell Wood.
Its cropped quiet a bit as I had only the 85mm lens with me. This family went in just in front of me so the red, black and white was hard to pass in a bluebell wood.
I recently traveled back to the Cleveland area to witness my goddaughter's First Communion. The funny thing about little girls, any girl really, is that a dress can make all the difference in their perception of the day. Provide a special dress, and the day takes on an entirely different meaning. I could tell that Cora had been looking forward to this day for quite some time. I have to imagine that the dress fittings with her grandmother only reinforced her expectations for the day.
I hope she remembers the day fondly for years to come. I have to admit that I don't remember much from my First Communion. But from the pictures we have, I don't think enjoyed my outfit nearly as much!
With regard to the picture itself, this was my favorite from the morning. The light was good and the bokeh thrown up by the wide aperture really made me smile when I went through the photos later on that night. I took this picture with my 50mm prime lens, almost wide open. One tricky thing for pictures taken with such a wide aperture is keeping the subject in focus. This is something I, and the autofocus on my D90, still struggle with at times. I guess the trick is to shoot lots of photos!
