Taken for the Dogwood 2017 Photo Challenge, Week 27. Theme: Communication. Was easy since I am in Toastmasters.
She played her whistle, and (perhaps coincidentally) a moose appeared on the other side of Rock Creek. The moose stood still and appeared to listen (wiggled her ears, even), but who can know if she was really paying attention. Then, at a point in time that was more or less concurrent with when the music finished, the noble beast trotted up the hill and out of sight.
We had to special order this super expensive air conditioning solvent. The stuff has a very particular temperature range it works well in.
When it showed up from UPS in an insulated container, I asked our receptionist if she could throw it in the fridge. She asked why she was putting a can of chemicals in the fridge. I told her "well, it works best when it's cold". Somehow she thought it would work even better if she put it in the freezer.
A $186 can of ruined solvent later, we all had a pretty good laugh.
Starting life as a WW2 decoy station and later a Ground Controlled Intercept (GCI) radar site, the site at Hack Green was upgraded as part of the ROTOR programme in the late 1950's. Building a R6 type, two level concrete bunker for military command and control (C2) and serving as a joint military and civil air traffic control centre. This function ceased in around 1966 when the complex was mothballed but remained under Government ownership.
In 1976 the site was given a new lease of life when it was taken over by the Home Office, modernised once again and operated as a Regional Government Headquarters; coordinating the civil response in the event of nuclear attack. The cold war was coming to an end, and eventually in 1993 the site was decommissioned.
Now in private hands, the bunker has been a cold war museum since 1998 and boasts some very unique exhibits including what is reputedly the largest collection of decommissioned nuclear weapons in the world, and a rare Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) console from RAF High Wycombe.

[2:22pm] ciaran: do you have svn installed?
[2:23pm] loincloth: yessir
[2:23pm] ciaran: well, you can either check out the bundle from SVN and then make your changes (but you'll have to remember to keep it up-to-date)
[2:23pm] ciaran: or you can change the file in the TextMate application (but you'll have to remember to re-apply your changes after updating TM)

What: A book by Ruben Pater published / paid for by BIS publishers in The Netherlands.
For: Students of Visual Communication.
Politics of Design is a collection of visual examples from around the world. Using ideas from anthropology and sociology, it creates surprising and educational insight in contemporary visual communication.
The examples relate to the daily practice of both online and offline visual communication: typography, images, colour, symbols, and information. The text explores the importance of visual literacy when communicating beyond borders and cultures. It explores the cultural meaning behind the symbols, maps, photography, typography, and colours that are used every day. It is a practical guide for design and communication professionals and students to create more effective and responsible visual communication.
Enhances your visual literacy for communication beyond borders and cultures. It is full of examples of political meaning in graphic design. And it is great for students to create more effective and responsible visual communication.
