Each week we follow one suggested theme and post up to five images showing our depiction of the theme.
Now that I've done this, I see I could have used it for last week's theme also which was "dangerous." This week's theme is "Unusual Combination's."
Join us each week and dust off that macro lens and show us what you can do.
strobist lighting info: two sb800's fired wirelessly, manual exposure about 1/64th power a few inches behind the whisky bottle and a second sb800 below. I shot somewhat from above, about a 45 degree angle. The gold light is from the whisky in the bottle.
Oh, as a side note, this was shot outdoors, in the woods.
Saturday in Cumbria combined a view of Leander in the rain followed by a wet visit to Threlkeld Steam Gala. Sunday on the Lancashire-Yorkshire border was dry-ish (after a very wet drive) and I combined a view of Leander on its move back to Carnforth from York (seen here approaching Gargrave) with a visit to nearby Bancroft Mill on one of its steaming days.
Our two cats like to cuddle up with my sandals, when they're off my feet. It's a cat thing, apparently.
I observed our curious one of the two feline companions in our home, Smokey, as she circled round the footware, pawing away at them and settling into a comfortable spot, sprawled across them on the floor. It was a perfect setting for a portrait.
I grabbed my camera, lay down on the floor, and contented myself with a long wait until the right combination of elements would eventually arrive in front of my lens. In the meanwhile, I had to put up with our two furry friends, licking my hair, my arm, rubbing up against me, and all manner of greetings and signs of affection while they got used to my new and unfamiliar position on the floor.
Eventually, they settled down and went back to my sandals, finding them more fun than me.
First Sissy, then Smokey, both took turns with my footwear. This image was towards the end of my patience. I'm glad I took the time.
The contrast and light is perfect for a portrait. It was worth both the kitty attention, and the wait.

The combination of Webb’s super powerful vision and a magnifying trick of gravity is allowing astronomers to resolve things never before seen in the early universe. 🔎
Imagine having a giant magnifying glass in space that could help us view the most distant galaxies more easily. Luckily, we can use galaxy clusters! They’re so massive their gravity can bend and magnify the light of objects behind them. In the case of galaxy MACS0647-JD, it is being magnified by the galaxy cluster, called MACS0647, in front of it. A side effect of this is that magnified objects can look warped and even appear multiple times around the edges of the galaxy cluster. The JD object appears 3 times, as shown in the sidebar here.
See the close-up views of galaxy MACS0647-JD on the right? Hubble showed just one object, but Webb shows that there are two. Are they two galaxies, perhaps merging? Or two clumps of stars within a galaxy? We don’t know yet, but Webb could help us figure it out.

[Image description: A view of deep space. The background is black and there are galaxies scattered all around, some looking like spirals, others like discs. They range in color from blue to golden to orange. In the center is a prominent, glowing cluster of galaxies and in the foreground, there are a few stars with prominent diffraction spikes. There are also 3 numbered small boxes outlined in white. These are 3 views of the same distant galaxy, which have been magnified, distorted, and repeated due to the gravitational lensing effect of the galaxy cluster. Enlarged images of what is in these boxes appear in a column down the right side. They are labeled JD 1, JD 2, and JD 3. Although Hubble showed just one object for this galaxy, Webb shows 2 distinct objects, one larger and one smaller.]
This time a combination of pink and black.
I wear my pink dress this time with a bolero, stockings and pumps in black and of course is the purse also black.
A recent trip abroad made me realize I really only needed a one lens/one body combination. Well, this was it. A FUJIFILM X-H1 and the superb XF16-55mm f/2.8 midrange zoom.
To me, it would seem that a dandelion bloom would be somehow different than this. I think that it's because a dandelion's fibers are all so scattered, at first glance, that it seems unlikely that they start out so orderly. Then the reasoning kicks in that dandelions use air dispersal to get their offspring away from the parent plant. Of course, then, there isn't a random combination of structures. They must be grown specifically to take advantage of being both light and fluffy.

This incredible combination of a Citroën SM converted into a pick-up, with an other Citroën SM on a trailer, was the long life project of Jerry Hathaway (1946-2021) from California.
Even the trailer has the hydraulic suspension of Citroën.
The SM enjoyed great success in the USA from the time of its introduction there in April 1972, when it was voted ‘Car of the Year’ by Motor Trend. The USA was the third largest market for the Citroën SM, after France and Italy, and the car was most successful in California. At the end of 1973, the last Citroën SMs were sold in the USA. New rules were scheduled to come into force for 1974, in particular the requirement for ‘impact-resistant’ bumpers, and Citroën was unwilling to make the necessary changes to what was a relatively low-volume model. By the time production ceased some 12,920 SMs had been built, only 2,037 of which were sold in the USA.
Fast forward to 1976 and Jerry Hathaway was by then working at another dealership, which was about to drop its Citroën franchise. He contacted Citroën and clinched a deal to take over the local franchise and and was able to buy his employer’s stock of spares and tools at cost price. It was the start of SM World Ltd, which has since gone on to become the USA’s foremost specialist for Citroën SM spares, repairs, and restoration.
One of Jerry’s customers was John McKibben, a former Bonneville Salt Flats racer, who suggested that the SM’s aerodynamic shape had the potential to make it a speed record car. Jerry had always harboured the ambition to be a drag racer, and when a damaged SM turned up at the workshop, destined to be cannibalized for parts, the project’s wheels were set in motion. The SM was duly restored to concours condition and transformed into an impeccable land speed record contender, retaining the stock hydro-pneumatic suspension and five-speed manual transmission. In the SM record car’s first incarnation the 3.0-litre Maserati V6 engine was left normally aspirated but extensively modified. Equipped with triple 48mm Weber carburettors, ‘hotter’ cams, and high-compression pistons, this engine produced an estimated 250bhp – quite an improvement over the stock 178 horsepower. In its initial configuration the Hathaway SM ran 151.2mph (243,33km/h) at Bonneville in 1979 to set a new F/ALT class record, which was followed up in 1980 by a new F/GC class record of 148.7mph (239,31km/h). The next stage of development saw the Maserati V6 fitted with a Garrett AiResearch turbocharger giving 20psi boost, and in this guise the SM cracked the magic 200mph (321,86km/h) barrier in 1985, clocking a speed of 200.002mph with Jerry at the wheel. Two years later, in 1987, his wife Sylvia topped that with a speed of 202.31mph (325,58km/h), making the Hathaways only the third married couple to join the exclusive 200mph Club. Between them the Hathaways set the following records:
1979. Bonneville Land Speed Trial F/ALT 151.249mph – 243,411 km/h
1980. Bonneville Land Speed Trial F/ALT 148.773mph – 239,426 km/h
1981. El Mirage Racing Season D/GC 175.430mph – 282,327 km/h
1985. Bonneville Land Speed Trial D/GC 200.002mph – 321,872 km/h
1987. Bonneville Land Speed Trial D/GC 202.301mph – 325,581 km/h

An example of the new Imbrium Lunokhod Industries innovation: the Strike Pack.
Strike packs are hot-swappable, back-mounted, equipment packs designed to extend the usefulness of generic frames. Strike packs allow individual units to utilize mission-specific hardware without the cost associated with purchasing and maintaining an extensive fleet of specialized frames.
This pack is designed with a squad leader in mind. The thruster pods can pivot independently and feature built-in stabilizing fins for short duration zero g thrust. Additionally, the pack comes with long range communication capabilities and both active and passive sensor suites.

Rare white lions: Lion (Credo) and lioness (Bandhura) in Ouwehands Zoo (Ouwehands Dierenpark) in Rhenen, the Netherlands.
For centuries rumors of mysterious white lions had been circulating in South Africa. Confirmation of the existence of white lions only came in the twentieth century. White lions were first recorded in 1928 and in the early 1940s. In 1975, two white cubs were seen at Timbavati Game Reserve, adjacent to Krüger National Park in South Africa. They were roughly two weeks old. The discovery was a sensation. The white specimens proved to be male and female. They were named Temba (Zulu for hope) and Tombi (girl). A few months later Temba en Tombi were taken to the National Zoo in Pretoria, South Africa. The 50 white lions currently in zoos worldwide are descendants of Temba and Tombi. White Lions cannot probable survive in the wild due to perceived lack of camouflage. Adult white lions in the wild have never seen.
White Lions are not albinos, but rare color mutations of the Krüger subspecies of lion (Panthera leo krugeri).
They have a combination of recessive genes which give them a white skin. The genetic condition, leucism, that causes paler colouration akin to that of the white tiger; the condition is similar to melanism, which causes black panthers. The white lion has been perpetuated by selective breeding in zoos around the world.

Calopteryx splendens
This is a large damselfly with a total length of up to 48 millimetres (1.9 in) and a hindwing length of up to 36 millimetres (1.4 in).
Male and female are variable in color and pattern. The male has translucent wings which each have a broad, dark iridescent blue-black spot (or band) across the outer part. On immature dragonflies the spot is dark brown. The body can be a metallic blue or bluish green or a combination of both colours, depending on the time of year and location.
The dark wing patch of the male starts at the nodus (the slight dip midway down the upper edge of the wing) but can reach up to the wing-tip in southern races.[2] In the very similar beautiful demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo), the dark patch starts before the nodus.
The female has translucent, pale green iridescent wings with a white patch near the tip (a pseudopterostigma), and a metallic green or bronze/green body.
Males are usually territorial, but large numbers can sometimes be found in lush bankside plants and on floating objects. They court females by opening their wings and performing an aerial dance. They are usually found in canals and quiet rivers with muddy bottoms located in open country.

The Portishead Sculpture Trail mostly in combination with parts of Bristol (with a few exceptions - the tags tell all...). I did not line up the film, nor take notes, nor plan the compositions. On occasions one image almost completely dominates, making it look like a single exposure - just to keep your observations skills on their toes!
The negatives were returned uncut as requested, but I did get lab scans - any overlaps of one frame over another, are a result of this. I have cropped where I feel it is most helpful to do so, so any inclusion of frame overlap is these uploaded images has been an active choice. I will almost certainly return to the negs with a home scanner to search for alternative compositions to complement these.
Redscaling.
Basically it involves taking a roll of ordinary 'bog standard' print film, reversing it and respooling it into another film canister (all done in a dark bag) so that the light is exposed on 'the wrong side of the film' when you take a shot. You then lose two 'stops' on the optimal exposure conditions from the original. It gets developed in exactly the same way as print film, but be prepared for the technician to be a little startled (at best) or a little irritated (at worst) when they realise that something very odd has happened to the film. :)
