The Citadel of Damascus is the only castle in Syria that is built on the same level of the city. It was built during the Saljukis time around 1000 A.D. This citadel has been a stronghold for the Romans, Ayyubis, and Mamluk. It was destroyed twice by during the first and second Mongol invasions.
The citadel of Blaye was build by Vauban on a rock beside the river, and embracing in its ancient ruins of an old Gothic château. Together with the Fort Paté on an island in the river and the Fort Médoc on its left bank, were meant for the defence of Bordeaux
The citadel of Blaye, its city walls, the Fort Paté and the Fort Médoc (the latter in nearby Cussac-Fort-Médoc) were listed in 2008 as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
