The old city of Carcassonne is famous for it's medieval fortifications, it's complete circuit of walls and towers crowned by distinctive conical roofs clearly belong to a lost era, looking like some sort of giant film set (for which purpose it has served).
There has been much 19th century restoration (by the renowned Viollet le Duc) but the majority of the fortifications we see today date from the 13th century, though there is work from the preceeding century too and even several towers and ramparts dating back as far as the 4th century to the Gallo-Roman era (the Romans first settled here in 2nd century AD).
One expects from the exterior of the citadel one enormous castle complex, so it is surprising to enter the main gate and be imediately confronted with the bustling narrow streets of a medieval town, lined with modern shops. Amongst this tightly compacted old city can be found the castle (a fortress within a fortress) and also the cathedral of St Nazaire (demoted to basilica since 1802).
Fagaras stands on the edge of the Carpathian mountains and near the famous Transfagarasan highway. The town itself has little to offer being mainly communist era apartment blocks but features the Citadel which is well worth a visit. A decent a cheap hotel near the citadel make it a good overnight stop.
The Citadel of Qaitbay (or the Fort of Qaitbay) (Arabic: قلعة قايتباي) is a 15th-century defensive fortress located on the Mediterranean sea coast, in Alexandria, Egypt. It was established in 1477 AD (882 AH) by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa'it Bay. The Citadel is situated on the eastern side of the northern tip of Pharos Island at the mouth of the Eastern Harbour
تقع هذه القلعة في نهاية جزيرة فاروس غرب الإسكندرية. وشيدت في مكان منار الإسكندرية القديم الذي تهدم سنة 702 هـ اثر الزلزال المدمر الذي حدث في عهد السلطان الناصر محمد بن قلاوون. وقد بدأ السلطان الأشرف أبو النصر قايتباي بناء هذه القلعة في سنة 882 هـ وانتهى من بنائها سنة 884 هـ. وكان سبب اهتمامه بالأسكندرية كثرة التهديدات المباشرة لمصر من قبل الدولة العثمانية والتي هددت المنطقة العربية بأسرها وقد اهتم السلطان المملوكي قنصوه الغوري بالقلعة فزاد من اهميتها وشحنها بالسلاح.
A Free Syrian fighter from the Al Taweed Katiba stands guard of the street, where around the corner is the Assad fighters in the Old City, Aleppo. The fighting in the City between both sides as come to a stalemate with either advancing.

I have been working on this project off and on for the past several weeks. I am shooting all the images for the Citadel Alumni Association's big book so I cover every aspect of a Cadet's life while at The Citadel.
It will be published later this year and will be available for purchase on campus and select bookstores.
