Spring Daffodils under the Royal Citadel, Plymouth

It was beyond impressive. Upon seeing it for the first time my friend Navid exclaimed: "Oh my god! Where did this come from!? Who built this!?"

These are the windows of the Citadel.

Built by the orders of the Ayyubi Sultan Salah el Din around 1180, the Citadel overlooks Cairo from the top and was utilized by Mohammed Ali as the Government palace and included the prison of political prisoners who are jailed without a trial til the days of Presendent Sadat.

Most of the citadel was erected by the Ayyubids in the C12th – C13th but was added to by the Ottomans in the C16th. Sadly a missile attack in 2012 damaged the gate and destroyed the iron doors which dated from 1211.

The Citadel of Salah ad-Din or Saladin was built between 1176 and 1183 as a place to defend Cairo from the Crusaders but the fort was never used as the Crusades never went into Egypt. The seat of government remained in the Citadel until 1860.

On a hilltop site overlooking central Amman sits the Citadel, a complex of buildings and ruins dating back to classical times (when the city was known as Philadelphia) onwards and including the ruins of several temples, the most prominent of which is the Temple of Hercules, with several columns still standing at full height.

Later remains date from the Byzantine and Umayyad periods, an impressive domed throne-room from the latter dynasty, and reflect the rich history of the site.

The citadel was part of the city's defensive formation, reinforcing the northern wall. During the 20th century the citadel was used mainly as a prison and as the site for a gallows.

The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long was constructed earliest by the Ly dynasty in 1010 and remained the seat of the Vietnamese court until 1810, when Huế became the capital city. The royal palaces and other various structures were largely destroyed by the colonial French in the late 19th century. Some structures remain such as Doan Mon gate and the Flag Tower of Hanoi, as well as the steps of Kinh Thiên Palace and the Hậu Lâu (Princess' Palace).

The Vietnamese military command under General Giap, had its headquarters in the citadel in the building known as D67. An underground tunnel enabled the military to flee to other parts in case of a raid.

Construction work for the National Assembly building in 2003 uncovered large remains of the citadel dating back to Thăng Long. Some of the remains are now exhibited in the Vietnamese History Museum. Where the planned new National Assembly building should not be located is still open.

Starting in 2000, some of the old French barracks and buildings have been destroyed to make place for a new museum within the citadel.

In 2010 the citadel was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as "The Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long - Hanoi".

The Halifax Citadel was part of the intricate defence system that Britain put in place to defend Halifax harbour in the eighteenth century. Halifax is apparently the second largest natural harbour in the world, after Sydney Australia, which made it a key military and economic possession.

New design for Citadel Guard

The most substantial remains at Amman's citadel are those of the Umayyad Palace, a fine example of early Islamic architecture consisting of a square throne-room capped by a dome (a recent reconstruction in wood). The wall decoration of blind arcading is strikingly reminiscent of that found in Romanesque buildings.
