Also, a movie starring Andy Griffith and Johnny Cash used one of the cars that now call this place "home." The honorary mayor of the "City," Dean Lewis, is also an artist in his own rite with some of the most unique canvas . . . the styrofoam cup. In his upstairs loft, Lewis has hundreds of styrofoam canvases featuring his artistic talents on display along with some paintings he will proudly show off.

Old Car City started as a small general store in 1931 during the Great Depression, Old Car City gradually evolved into a very big, very old automobile junkyard. But it wasn't until 2009 that owner Dean Lewis -- who grew up on the property -- realized he could turn it into a tourist attraction because a lot of people shared his love of decomposing automotive carcasses. It is still family owned and operated. 34 acres of forest and fields filled with 4,000 old cars (1972 and older) weathered and deteriorating old American cars. It has more than 6.5 miles of trails on 34 acres. Located about 45 minutes north of Atlanta in White, Georgia, is a cross between a junkyard and an outdoor car museum.

Marvin Eugene Throneberry (b: September 2, 1933 – d: June 23, 1994 at age 60) was a MLB player, best remembered as the starting first baseman for the 1962 New York Mets, a team which set the modern record for most losses in a season with 120.
Signed as an amateur free agent by the New York Yankees in 1952, he made his major-league debut in September 1955. He was one of the most feared minor league sluggers of the 1950s.
he spent two seasons on the Yankees' bench before being included in a six-player trade for Kansas City Athletics power-hitting outfielder Roger Maris before the 1960 season.
With the Mets, Throneberry got his first chance as a regular, and he responded by hitting .244 with 16 home runs and 49 RBI. However, he committed 17 errors at first base. He facetiously came to be known as Marvelous Marv, maintained a sense of humor about his play and became a favorite with fans and the media. At one point he had a fan club which numbered around 5,000 members.
In a seven-season career, Throneberry was a .237 hitter with 53 home runs and 170 RBI in 480 games.

Last night, this image changed from precious to irreplaceable.
It was taken earlier this year while Elie and I were attending a free concert at the Kennedy Center. Although we attended the concert with the expressed hope of talking to him, it was an amazing stroke of good fortune that Dr. Taylor gave us an exclusive audience to discuss topics like Billy Strayhorn and jazz in general. A few minutes after I snapped this image, Dr. Taylor was swarmed with fans and important dignitaries vying for his attention. That window of opportunity is one my favorite memories at the KC.
To those who understand Billy Taylor's importance in the world of jazz (and music in general), he needs no introduction. But for those who are less familiar with this artistic giant, the overview below should help. Most of you don't need to be reminded that Elie is studying jazz and composition at the Berklee College of Music.

Billy Taylor, one of the musical treasures of Washington and the world, died last night, Dec. 28, at a hospital in New York City. He was 89 and died of a heart attack.
Dr. Taylor, as he was known to one and all, was a first-rate jazz pianist who grew up in Washington and was a graduate of Dunbar High School. He moved to New York in the early 1940s and was present at the birth of bebop, the new vernacular of music that transformed jazz. He played alongside Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis and became a protege of the greatest jazz pianist ever, Art Tatum.
In the 1950s, Dr. Taylor began to branch out into broadcasting with a television series, "The Subject Is Jazz," and with radio programs. He appeared on CBS over the years, particuarly on "CBS Sunday Morning," interviewing and performing many of the great artists in jazz.
Dr. Taylor -- who earned a doctorate in education, by the way -- had been the artistic adviser for jazz programming at the Kennedy Center and was a constant presence at concerts at the center. He often performed with his own trio and other groups and helped make the Kennedy Center one of the most important venues for jazz in America. He launched the annual Women in Jazz Festival at the Kennedy Center and was instrumental in developing other concert series.
For several years, he was the host of an NPR series, "Billy Taylor's Jazz at the Kennedy Center," and many people considered him the foremost jazz educator of his -- or any -- time.
Dr. Taylor received every award there is in jazz and the arts, including the National Medal of Arts in 1992, and was designated a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1988.

Visitors enjoy the beautiful vegetation of the deep south that is intertwined with the hundreds of cars that reside in Old Car City.
Come enjoy the Old South environment, folk art, ghosts of beautiful classic cars, and much more! With over 34 acres and over 4000 American-made cars from the early 20th Century, these cars, trucks, vans, and even a couple school buses are placed in such a way as to be ideally suited for photos, videos and custom camera shoots. Over the 8 decades since first started, thousands of photographers, videographers, ad agencies and media companies have visited Old Car City USA. Popular news magazine and newspaper companies, like CBS Sunday Morning, the New York Times, the BBC and Georgia Public Television, have made press releases and/or video segments and transmitted it worldwide. Who knew that Old Car City USA, a place where junk cars go to live out the rest of their existence, would be such a fascinating stop.
Mayor of Old Car City USA, Dean Lewis, welcomes all who come out to visit his varied collection of automobile art with a little help from Mother Nature. You can come and just stroll along with winding paths for a nominal fee or, for a few dollars more, bring a camera and take pictures and/or videos and share them with friends. Among the many cars at Old Car City USA, there is the last car Elvis Presley ever bought back in 1977 just a couple months before he died.
