Tourist attraction in Bartow County, Georgia. Old Car City in White, Georgia contains the worlds largest known classic car junkyard & is a unique landscape of metal and moss. Visitors enjoy the beautiful vegetation of the deep south that is intertwined with the hundreds of cars that reside in Old Car City.
Old Car City started as a small general store in 1931 during the Great Depression, Old Car City gradually evolved into a very big, very old automobile junkyard. But it wasn't until 2009 that owner Dean Lewis -- who grew up on the property -- realized he could turn it into a tourist attraction because a lot of people shared his love of decomposing automotive carcasses. It is still family owned and operated. 34 acres of forest and fields filled with 4,000 old cars (1972 and older) weathered and deteriorating old American cars. It has more than 6.5 miles of trails on 34 acres. Located about 45 minutes north of Atlanta in White, Georgia, is a cross between a junkyard and an outdoor car museum.
Come enjoy the Old South environment, folk art, ghosts of beautiful classic cars, and much more! With over 34 acres and over 4000 American-made cars from the early 20th Century, these cars, trucks, vans, and even a couple school buses are placed in such a way as to be ideally suited for photos, videos and custom camera shoots. Over the 8 decades since first started, thousands of photographers, videographers, ad agencies and media companies have visited Old Car City USA. Popular news magazine and newspaper companies, like CBS Sunday Morning, the New York Times, the BBC and Georgia Public Television, have made press releases and/or video segments and transmitted it worldwide. Who knew that Old Car City USA, a place where junk cars go to live out the rest of their existence, would be such a fascinating stop.
Mayor of Old Car City USA, Dean Lewis, welcomes all who come out to visit his varied collection of automobile art with a little help from Mother Nature. You can come and just stroll along with winding paths for a nominal fee or, for a few dollars more, bring a camera and take pictures and/or videos and share them with friends. Among the many cars at Old Car City USA, there is the last car Elvis Presley ever bought back in 1977 just a couple months before he died. Also, a movie starring Andy Griffith and Johnny Cash used one of the cars that now call this place "home." The honorary mayor of the "City," Dean Lewis, is also an artist in his own rite with some of the most unique canvas . . . the styrofoam cup. In his upstairs loft, Lewis has hundreds of styrofoam canvases featuring his artistic talents on display along with some paintings he will proudly show off.

Day 85 of the 365 days challenge.
My mother's favorite TV show is CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood. I don't mind watching it, because they tend to have a lot of segments on the arts-- for example, a visit to my mom and a viewing of Sunday Morning is how I discovered my favorite fine art photographer of all time, Gregory Colbert. There was a segment yesterday, however, that really hit to the core of one of the subjects I'm most fascinated by-- the science of beauty.
Most people know that there's something universally attractive about a symmetrical face. We've all heard about the studies where newborn babies were shown pictures of beautiful and ugly people of every race, age, and ethnicity, and the babies always seemed happier looking at beautiful people. Despite certain cultural and social proclivities, the ideas of what is empirically beautiful remain the same. And it can be expressed mathematically, in the phi ratio-- 1.618:1, the number in which all beauty lies.
There was a segment on Sunday Morning about a plastic surgeon who actually created a mask using the phi ratio, and now uses it to build his clients the perfect face. (You can get your own copy of the mask here.) This is the traditional, AKA "Young white girl" mask; if you go browsing through the site, beautyanalysis.com. you'll find variations for males and other ethnicities, as well as a discussion of how the face alters with aging.
For today, I decided to follow the good doctor's instructions to the letter and take a picture at just the right angle to overlay the mask and see what needed changing. Wow. My lips-- lower and upper-- are too big, the shape of my nose is right, but the bridge isn't narrow enough and my nostrils are too wide. My eyes are too high up. My eyebrows were such a mess I had to paint over them (and honestly, that's the one part of this whole thing I'd love to keep). My cheekbones were great, but to my surprise, my jaw wasn't wide enough. Even my hairline was too low, which was a surprise, because I tend to feel sometimes like I'm all forehead.
In conclusion, I decided that I look entirely too weird with a perfect face. I guess there are worse things than keeping the one I've got. I need to scrounge up the money to get my eyebrows waxed now, though..

Yummy hot cocoa was inspired by the spot on CBS Sunday Morning about the concoction. So, of course, I had to go make some for myself.

In orange and green,
Keith Haring's soul still dances
On East Houston Street.
I caught this while walking to the Landmark Sunshine Theater, right next to Billy's Antiques and Props, on the north side of Houston.
After getting to bed at an improbable midnight, I found myself wide-awake at 4am, and itchy all over... I watched CBS Sunday Morning until 6, and tried to sleep on the couch (I was worried about tossing and turning and waking up Julie). There was a segment about a dog and an elephant who are best friends. Isn't that always the way? www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFz-FMj-9Ps Finally crawled back into bed around 7:30.
Synecdoche is about to start. Gotta finish this later.
(update: it's now later)
Woke up at 1 or so. Since it was my first full day of work (see January 1 entry for more information on my Dog Whisperer anti-procrastination strategy), I immediately got dressed and went to get a protein smoothie downstairs. I must admit, it was a strange feeling not checking e-mail or reading all my Apple-related RSS feeds. From there, I headed to the gym. (Again, as a reminder: exercise, discipline, and affection... in that order! My writing process has simply been a neurotic dog that needs rehabilitation!)
Got back and after a shower and a brief delay involving iPhoto (I'm sure I'll be better tomorrow), I headed down to the HWH offices where I was to do my 1/2 hour of writing. This went pretty smoothly, even if the writing itself was frustrating. Turns out, 1/2 hour is definitely not enough (could have told you that), but this is how you create lasting patterns. So I worked for a bit more, and then went down to Union Square to fix Julie's Final Cut Pro woes.
There, I was faced with the choice of going home for dinner or going out to see Synecdoche, and I chose freely: Synecdoche. I'm sure the first paragraphs of this entry have already burst the bubble of suspense for you, dear reader; nevertheless, I took the subway down to Bleeker and walked over.
It was a bizarre and recursive film, as you'd expect of Charlie Kaufman, of course. But it's staying with me; it's a little haunting in that way. I'm glad that a film as crazy and unconventional as that can still be made in this day of "four-quadrant" films. Makes me happy to be alive. As I walked down Houston towards first, I found myself taking a series of pictures. The whole city felt like a set (which you'd understand if you've seen Synecdoche). I found my way to Lucien's for a tartare (an extra quail egg, please!) and a drink (scotch—they didn't have Laphroig, but they did have Lagavulin, which was similarly smokey). I had a very Synecdoche conversation with both the bartender (Peter, who speaks perfect English even though he's from Paris) and a puzzling yet charming girl from Chile (Paola, born in Argentina but grew up in Chile). Her father was a filmmaker. She said things like "It's funny how you talk to people and they tell you all about themselves. I am trying to keep from saying too much about myself." And Peter would say, "Why? You have nothing to hide. Do you?" Maybe it was the movie, but I swear I felt like I was in a French New Wave film. Anyway, we all talked at length. It was very gezellig. (Google it—it's Dutch).
Twenty minutes in a cab later and I'm home, finishing up this day's damned recitation. And tomorrow, it begins again! As ever.

Over the years, I've found that most of the books I read end up in my lap not because of a review, or because someone told me I should read it, but because of casual mentions (like the book I'm reading here) that I glean from a blog post or a TV show (CBS Sunday Morning's done that to me at least a half dozen times).
All I can say is that I found both storylines to be fascinating and engrossing, despite what, on the surface, seems like the strangest combination of stories you can imagine.
