Tourist attraction in Bartow County, Georgia. Old Car City in White, Georgia contains the worlds largest known classic car junkyard & is a unique landscape of metal and moss. Visitors enjoy the beautiful vegetation of the deep south that is intertwined with the hundreds of cars that reside in Old Car City.
Old Car City started as a small general store in 1931 during the Great Depression, Old Car City gradually evolved into a very big, very old automobile junkyard. But it wasn't until 2009 that owner Dean Lewis -- who grew up on the property -- realized he could turn it into a tourist attraction because a lot of people shared his love of decomposing automotive carcasses. It is still family owned and operated. 34 acres of forest and fields filled with 4,000 old cars (1972 and older) weathered and deteriorating old American cars. It has more than 6.5 miles of trails on 34 acres. Located about 45 minutes north of Atlanta in White, Georgia, is a cross between a junkyard and an outdoor car museum.
Come enjoy the Old South environment, folk art, ghosts of beautiful classic cars, and much more! With over 34 acres and over 4000 American-made cars from the early 20th Century, these cars, trucks, vans, and even a couple school buses are placed in such a way as to be ideally suited for photos, videos and custom camera shoots. Over the 8 decades since first started, thousands of photographers, videographers, ad agencies and media companies have visited Old Car City USA. Popular news magazine and newspaper companies, like CBS Sunday Morning, the New York Times, the BBC and Georgia Public Television, have made press releases and/or video segments and transmitted it worldwide. Who knew that Old Car City USA, a place where junk cars go to live out the rest of their existence, would be such a fascinating stop.
Mayor of Old Car City USA, Dean Lewis, welcomes all who come out to visit his varied collection of automobile art with a little help from Mother Nature. You can come and just stroll along with winding paths for a nominal fee or, for a few dollars more, bring a camera and take pictures and/or videos and share them with friends. Among the many cars at Old Car City USA, there is the last car Elvis Presley ever bought back in 1977 just a couple months before he died. Also, a movie starring Andy Griffith and Johnny Cash used one of the cars that now call this place "home." The honorary mayor of the "City," Dean Lewis, is also an artist in his own rite with some of the most unique canvas . . . the styrofoam cup. In his upstairs loft, Lewis has hundreds of styrofoam canvases featuring his artistic talents on display along with some paintings he will proudly show off.

Three-minute time exposure of the northern sky showing a variety of people and telescopes (along with the large radio tower) at the 2007 Winter Star Party.
The Winter Star Party is an event held annually in the Florida Keys... it started out as a rather small gathering in Mahogany Hammock in the Everglades in 1985. It has grown significantly over the years and now regularly attracts over 500 die-hard amateur astronomers from places as far off as Germany and Japan.
More often than not, the local press covers the event, although occasionally the "larger" outlets report about it. In fact, not only have there been a few stories in the Miami Herald --one year, CBS News sent a crew down and the WSP was a featured story on CBS Sunday Morning! (And though I didn't have a speaking role, I WAS on camera for a few seconds!) :-)
This shot captures the feel of what has become an annual ritual for me --my yearly trek down to West Summerland Key to set up my equipment and revel in the beautiful, clear, dark and still skies, far from city lights, as the warm ocean breezes wash over us.

Last night, the man and I realized that we had nothing on the agenda for Sunday. Let that sink in for a moment. An actual day of rest with no expectations at all.
We were positively giddy.
The morning started off well. Pajamas. CBS Sunday Morning. Coffee. Breakfast. Reading.
Then I decided to go for a run.
About a half mile into the run, I was suddenly knocked to the ground by an excited puppy. Not realizing the dog was behind me, it totally caught me off guard and I screamed. The dog jumped on me and started licking me and jumping around in utter happiness.
I got up and started to run again. Apparently that was code for continue jumping and being excited. The dog followed me for over 2 miles finally ending back at my house.
There may or may not have been some bonding going on during that time.
Her ribs are showing. There is an injury on her right shoulder. She is somewhat mangy and is covered in a rash under her legs and on her abdomen.
Mili hates her and she snaps at her and her playful ways. We aren't sure what we are going to do with her. The last thing we need is another dog.
We've been calling her Clementine.
**UPDATE** 11/11/13
Clementine is currently at the shelter so that she can get treated for the skin issues. We have to be careful to not infect Mili -- but it broke our heart for her to go. The man and I've already discussed the fact that we are not letting her go. She is just there for a little while. She will be home soon.

MONDAY DECEMBER 26 2022 150p - Last day off of 3 days off. Cold, boring weekend - but not stuck at work is the main thing. 444 more to post from Old Car City. I will most likely get this folder finished tonight . . .

The Repurposed Auto runs through April 24, 2010.
os Angeles artist Michael Kalish debuts a new series of works at Sophia Louisa Projects @ Phantom Galleries LA-Miracle Mile on February 11, 2010.
"From the salvage yards of Southern California, Kalish has stripped classic cars of their exoskeletons," writes Michael Reid Busk in Inland Empire Weekly. It is with skillful and meticulous mastery that Kalish has created this new, never before seen series made from automobile parts, more specifically, the automobile license plate which has been manipulated to be reminiscent of stained glass windows.
Kalish combines tongue in cheek reverence by adding Vargas-style pin up girls to imagery that one would recognize in a church. Keeping the work contemporary, yet with a retro-feel of nostalgia, Kalish's works are compelling and captivating.
Join us Saturday, February 20, 2010 for the artist reception, 7 - 10 pm at 5412 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles as we celebrate the artist's new work (and his birthday).
On Saturday, April 17, 2010, Michael Kalish will speak about the process of his new series during the Miracle Mile Art Walk from noon to 8 pm. He will speak to the public at 7:00 pm. Free admission.
About Michael Kalish
Over the past fifteen years Michael Kalish has been growing an art career which has taken him from a single gallery showing and a few press clippings to national and international exposure and representation in galleries from Los Angeles to Stockholm, New York to Hong Kong. Kalish has been the feature of stories in publications from the NY Times and People to Art in America and USA Today, as well as on TV segments from CBS Sunday Morning to CNN's "To the Top."
In what began some two decades ago as an interest in fashioning sculptures from license plates from our automobiles, Kalish has emerged from an artist with a vision into what art dealers, critics, and the art world are now calling:
"Not just established but one of the artists of today." - Chris Forney, Art Dealer
"Kalish's exhibits and new works are not just masterful but hopeful, being surrounded by them make us feel that the best days are yet to come." - Reid Busk, Art Critic
Born in 1973, Kalish found his chosen medium through an obsession with license plates. His initial fascination with a South Dakota license plate stuck with him as he collected thousands of license plates and experimented with myriad graphic works of pop icons for over a decade. These works played with Americana themes, in a format with roots that descend from Warhol and other pop artists. Presidents, celebrities, famous musicians and beauties were all rendered in a stylistic graphic portrait fused from cut license plates arranged in a tableau. From here, Kalish's work progressed up several inches on the car, and he started using vintage truck tailgates. Kalish references the work of John Chamberlain as a major influence. Both artists use automobile parts, but Chamberlain's work uses these pieces exclusively in abstract form, as a sculptural approach to an abstract expressionist style. In contrast, Kalish's work here is representational, but the details and the form are pure emotion.

Day 85 of the 365 days challenge.
My mother's favorite TV show is CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood. I don't mind watching it, because they tend to have a lot of segments on the arts-- for example, a visit to my mom and a viewing of Sunday Morning is how I discovered my favorite fine art photographer of all time, Gregory Colbert. There was a segment yesterday, however, that really hit to the core of one of the subjects I'm most fascinated by-- the science of beauty.
Most people know that there's something universally attractive about a symmetrical face. We've all heard about the studies where newborn babies were shown pictures of beautiful and ugly people of every race, age, and ethnicity, and the babies always seemed happier looking at beautiful people. Despite certain cultural and social proclivities, the ideas of what is empirically beautiful remain the same. And it can be expressed mathematically, in the phi ratio-- 1.618:1, the number in which all beauty lies.
There was a segment on Sunday Morning about a plastic surgeon who actually created a mask using the phi ratio, and now uses it to build his clients the perfect face. (You can get your own copy of the mask here.) This is the traditional, AKA "Young white girl" mask; if you go browsing through the site, beautyanalysis.com. you'll find variations for males and other ethnicities, as well as a discussion of how the face alters with aging.
For today, I decided to follow the good doctor's instructions to the letter and take a picture at just the right angle to overlay the mask and see what needed changing. Wow. My lips-- lower and upper-- are too big, the shape of my nose is right, but the bridge isn't narrow enough and my nostrils are too wide. My eyes are too high up. My eyebrows were such a mess I had to paint over them (and honestly, that's the one part of this whole thing I'd love to keep). My cheekbones were great, but to my surprise, my jaw wasn't wide enough. Even my hairline was too low, which was a surprise, because I tend to feel sometimes like I'm all forehead.
In conclusion, I decided that I look entirely too weird with a perfect face. I guess there are worse things than keeping the one I've got. I need to scrounge up the money to get my eyebrows waxed now, though..
