The first speckled male bush cricket of the year - hoorah! less than 1cm but perfect. I discovered him on the gooseberry bush where I found his parents last year. It so wonderful to see the cycle continuing.

One of the more interesting(and, from what I've heard, elusive) animals at the Zoo is the bush dog. We actually saw him right by his water hole one day, and got off a lot of pictures. They're interesting little animals.

Bush Stone curlew
(from wikipedia)
The Bush Stone Curlew or Bush Thick-knee (Burhinus grallarius, obsolete name Burhinus magnirostris) is a large, ground-dwelling bird endemic to Australia. Although it looks rather like a wader and is related to the oystercatchers, avocets and plovers, it is a terrestrial predator filling a similar ecological niche to the roadrunners of North America.
Like most stone-curlews, it is mainly nocturnal and specialises in hunting small grassland animals: frogs, spiders, insects, molluscs, crustaceans, snakes, lizards and small mammals are all taken, mostly gleaned or probed from soft soil or rotting wood; also a few seeds or tubers, particularly in drought years. Birds usually forage individually or in pairs over a large home range, particularly on moonlit nights.
During the day, Bush Stone-curlews tend to remain inactive, sheltering amongst tall grass or low shrubs and relying on their cryptic plumage to protect them from predators. When disturbed, they freeze motionless, often in odd-looking postures. For visual predators like raptors (and humans), this works well, but it serves little purpose with animals that hunt by scent such as foxes, dingoes or goannas.
Despite their ungainly appearance and habit of freezing motionless, they are sure-footed, fast and agile on the ground, and although they seldom fly during daylight hours, they are far from clumsy in the air; flight is rapid and direct on long, broad wings.
When threatened (presumably in the presence of a nest), they may raise their wings wide and high in an impressive threat posture and emit a loud hoarse hissing noise.

Smiths Bush is on the North Shore, Auckland, New Zealand. There is a loop track taking about 30 - 40 minutes to walk at a leisurely pace taking you back in time with the old puriri trees. I am surprised how many people I talk to haven't been there - it's very close to the motorway (in fact cuts through it) and also close to Takapuna, Milford, Northcote and Glenfield shops.

In another web, there was a large spider which had captured another spider in its web, a light colored one. The large, dark spider was quite far back in the web, and I didn't want to tear it, so I couldn't get a shot of it. I did manage to get a shot of the poor little captured spider, but it was blurry - and this time, it wasn't my fault.
I was just about to snap the shot, I was really satisfied with the way it was appearing, and even moreso because it did take me quite a bit of time to line it up just how I wanted. Suddenly I hear a couple of boys shouting something, and I was so surprised that I slipped from my awkward kneeling position right as I pushed the button. It really was kind of a shock because that street/avenue is always really peaceful, even with the skater boys who've started hanging out in front of one of their friends' house lately.
I ignored the boys, trying to line up the shot again, this time taking a more comfortable and stable position - even though it made getting close to the web harder. I'm focusing on the screen when I hear one of the boys say something that I realize is directed at me.
It's not like it's the first time someone's made a racial slur combined with a sexual taunt/insult, but I was surprised by this one. I guess it was just the calm of the place, the sunlight, my really upbeat mood despite a long day.. I didn't know what to do. I looked, and there were three boys considerably taller than me heading my way along the sidewalk. I debated quickly if I should stay where I am and just continue shooting away, letting myself hope they'd keep talking and walk on by - or get up quickly and try to get home before they caught up. I nearly hesitated too long.
I stood up, and started walking, trying to balance the camera, three textbooks, and my iPod. It was really awkward trying to walk fast and appear casual and unconcerned - all without dropping anything that would slow me down. They kept saying some of the most offensive things I'd ever heard, and their pace was quick to begin with so they seemed to be catching up with me. I sped up as I reached the corner, and our house is situated about halfway down the avenue I'd just turned onto. A stretch to cross if they tried anything. I looked back to see how far along they were, and recognized one of the boys. I remembered that he lived right down the street I'd just turned away from.. and when I saw that they turned the corner behind me, I freaked out and ran, trying simultaneously to reason with myself that maybe they were heading over to one of the other boys' homes.
They started running, too.. but I got home and smashed on the doorbell before trying to dig out my keys. My brother opened the inside door just as I opened the outside one, and I pushed him in and jumped in myself, yanking the gate shut.
They were halfway up the walkway when that happened.
So, was that my price for an awesome shot? One of the very few I've ever been blessed with? Or was God just trying to wake me up out of the stupor I'd drooped into before my evening class?
=)
