In the Bush estate in Midlothian are many, many wonderful trees: beech, oak, sequoia even, and this example of the Scots Pine, our only native species of pine. This one had a third stem at one time but which has died and been cut back. Despite its damage, the tree is nearly four metres around and is consequently one to record.

Scots Pine when used for timber is called Red Deal or Yellow Deal, and my first bass guitar has a body made from the latter. It has a strong smell that is slightly sweet and fruity, with a bit of pungence, like peanut oil mixed with glue.

This looks like a replica of the De Havilland Beaver, a rugged made-in-Canada bush plane flown throughout Canada's north and wilderness.

2724 x 3108~~$~~(FILES)Former US President George H.W. Bush waves as he leaves the East Room following the official portrait unveiling of his son former US President George W. Bush and his wife Laura Bush in this May 31, 2012 file photo at the White House in Washington, DC. Bush is on the mend and has been released from intensive care, a spokesman said December 29, 2012. "President Bush's condition has improved, so he has been moved today from the intensive care unit to a regular patient room at The Methodist Hospital to continue his recovery," spokesman Jim McGrath said. "The Bushes thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes." Earlier in the week, McGrath said Bush had taken a turn for the worse, with a "series of setbacks" sending the 88-year-old to the intensive care unit at the Houston, Texas hospital with a "stubborn fever." Or should that be Bush Fire? Couldn't resist this through my living room window last night.

This is the one that took us on an aerial tour of the region around Tadoussac and the lower Saguenay River. The plane is shown landing on Lac Long (Long Lake, pretty obviously) a few miles outside of Tadoussac. This air tour service was operated by Aviation du Fjord Inc.

All seemed quiet. Not far from Shepherd's Bush police station.

Lupinus arboreus is considered invasive in many areas. I happened to take this photo in one of the areas where it is considered native - the San Mateo Coast of California. I found the following article interesting:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lupinus_arboreus

Lupinus arboreus, yellow bush lupine (USA) or tree lupin (UK), is a species of flowering plant in the legume family Fabaceae, native to California, where it is widely distributed among coastal scrub and sand dunes. Because it has been widely introduced, there is some uncertainty about its native range; it is thought to be native from Point Reyes National Seashore south to San Luis Obispo County.

It has escaped from cultivation to become an invasive species in many areas. Outside of its native range in North America, it is somewhat invasive both in southern California, and further north to southwestern Canada. It has also been introduced in western Europe, Australia (where it is considered a potential noxious weed), New Zealand, Anatolia Aegean Region of Turkey and southern South America, including the Falkland Islands.

Like many members of the Fabaceae, it is an effective fixer of nitrogen in the soil. Where it has been introduced, it changes the chemistry of the soil, and therefore allows other exotics to establish themselves, to the detriment of native vegetation adapted to low nitrogen levels. It also hybridizes with other lupine species such as Lupinus littoralis (seashore lupin) and Lupinus rivularis (riverbank lupin), further endangering the survival of those forms.

Lupinus longifolius

Found in open wooded areas in protected canyons. Large perennial flowers from April-July ( normally, this year it's a little early)

Native Americans used to eat the young leaves and flowers in acorn soup and used the seeds medicinally, even though they are poisonous.
