About Vientiane, Laos
Vientiane is the capital and largest city of Laos, situated on the Mekong River. Vientiane became the capital in 1563 due to fears of a Burmese invasion. During French rule, Vientiane was the administrative capital and, due to economic growth in recent times, it has now become the economic centre of Laos.
The name of the city is derived from Pali, the liturgical language of Theravada Buddhism. In modern Lao, the meaning of Vientiane is ambiguous, and is often believed to mean "city of the moon", because the words for 'moon' (chandra in Sanskrit) and 'sandalwood' (chandana in Sanskrit) are written and pronounced identically as 'chan'.

These buildings are in the first block east of Nippersink Blvd. Here’s a link to a 1938 photo looking west on Grand Avenue. Bast’s 5 to 1.00 Store on the right hand side of the vintage photo has been enlarged to form the building on the right in the 2010 photo:
In 1957, the Hyde Park Liberal Congregation moved from Shotwell Hall at 55th and Blackstone to this location which it shared with the South Shore Church of the Nazerene. The congregation was renamed Temple B'nai Yehudah. In 1960, the congregation moved to 8201 S. Jeffery. The current building on this lot is more recent, having been built around 1965.
