Miami Habitat is holding its seventh Women Build through December 3, 2011, in Liberty City. More than 200 women will come together to volunteer to build a home for partner family Tiara Armstrong and her five year old daughter Jamaria, just in time for the holidays. “My family was very happy and we cried tears of joy when we found out that I was accepted to the program,” said Armstrong. “Owning my own home will be a blessing!”
Women Build is a Habitat for Humanity International program underwritten by Lowe’s which brings together women from all walks of life to address the housing crisis facing millions worldwide. Since the program’s inception in 1998, Women Build volunteers have constructed more than 1,800 houses, including six in Miami-Dade County.
Miami Habitat’s Women Build is in line with its ongoing Liberty City Shine campaign, which aims to build or rehab 90 homes in Liberty City in the coming year. Women Build recruits, educates and inspires women to build decent and affordable homes for low-income families in their communities. Many women come to the Women Build site without previous construction experience and find their inner Rosie the Riveter as they learn new skills and make a positive impact in the community. Their leadership and service are changing lives.

New-build Peppercorn A1 Pacific no. 60163 'Tornado' passes the Lancaster Canal at Catterall, on the beautiful summers evening of the 5th July 2014, whilst working the return leg of 'The Border Raider' charter.
The charter ran from London Euston to Carlisle and return, using the West Coast main line route. The steam leg of the tour was from Crewe to Carlisle and back as far as Preston.
The evening was hot, so unfortunately there was no exhaust. Nevertheless, 'Tornado' in blue made a fine sight.
I'm a bit behind on posting my one little word for 2013. It really took some time for me to make a choice this year. Last year seemed so easy, and I was so ready to implement come major "change" in my life. I was able to do just that and the change has served me well. This year I have chosen the word build. 2013 will be a year of hard work for me. There are so many things that I want to "build". Here are just a few: faith, relationships, skills (cooking, and photography), a better me, and confidence (mine and those who surround me). This is just the tip of the iceberg. It's time for some major construction. :)
Last week I attended Belfast's very own design festival, Build, founded by the man himself, Andy McMillan.
It always proves to be a great week and this year was no different. By volunteering I had the opportunity to spend most of the week around many creative minds, and meet the designers who inspire me.
