Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Walthamstow, London*. Here are the details of the project

The Mosaic Garden in Walthamstow, London E17

BRIEF:

This small garden was a completely blank canvas – an unappealing patch of concrete with a small, overgrown area of lawn in one corner. Surrounded by other gardens on all sides, the space benefited from high, rendered block walls, giving it a strong sense of privacy and providing a secluded environment that allowed for a variety of planting possibilities.

SOLUTION:

Taking inspiration from Anton Gaudi’s Parc Guell in Barcelona, this garden features curved and undulating raised beds that flow organically around the space. Intricately adorned with colourful hand-laid mosaic patterns, these beds slope gently upwards from their lowest point in the left hand corner. The centre of the space features a kidney shaped area of artificial turf (chosen to withstand the attentions of the household dog) edged with a variety of earth toned tiles and surrounded by a hard flooring comprising a mixture of decorative pea shingle and plum coloured paddlestones in black dyed concrete.

The entertaining possibilities of the garden are enhanced by the integration of a free standing hot tub in the top left of the space, and curved fixed-bench seating in the top right corner. The seating area benefits from a bespoke kidney shaped wooden table with built in patio heater, allowing ample space for summertime alfresco dining.

The high block walls are adorned with mosaic panels in a chequerboard pattern, each panel individually designed and hand laid. Added privacy to the space is provided by rusted steel trellis set into the top of the walls, through which a variety of vines and creepers are trained. The boundaries are given extra embellishment with the inclusion of an assortment of wall-mounted sculpture, lanterns, planters and other ephemera.

NEOBALLS / ZEN MAGNETS - Neodymium Magnetic Balls (@4205) - Starcraft II's Massive Thor

This is my most complex and largest build to date.

It was designed in parts: Cockpit body, then legs, then arms, then rear guns. Then I had to redesign parts when it came time to assemble it together because of incorrect bonding assumptions and misalignment of magnet fields.

Experimented with x-beam coupled bonds to get the maximum lateral strength with reinforcements on the sides. This proved to be very string. Created a X-Beam using similar methods producing a very strong leg structure. It was capable of support the entire weight of the cockpit body w/o a problem. Had to redesign the leg to cockpit body mount point from the earlier concept because the bond was not completely coupled.

Next up were the arm/guns ... the weight was too much for the cockpit body to support so I fashioned a pair of lego-platforms for them to rest on and take the weight off of the central body.

Finally ... the rear guns ... these were a challenge in that their original mount point design had to be reworked also to make them fit correctly into the rear of the cockpit body. I changed the mount points on the guns to fit the space on both sides and added a few support balls to improve the mount point bonds. I was very surprised how they were balanced and supported only by two point sections to the body. The guns stayed in place for a small series of photos.

The design flaw was in the side bonds of the beam to the legs. The coupled field held nicely for a short amount of time and would have held if it didn't have the weight of the rear guns to support. When they were standing upright and straight, all was good. As soon as I attempted to move the platform forward (to take a video), the rear guns tilted slightly backwards and and that was the end of the leg to body support bonds ... and created the dreaded implosion.

The rear gun weight caused the entire central body section to rotate backwards and fall back on the rear guns ... taking the arms in the process. Perhaps I should have created a Lego-support structure for the rear guns to remove the pendulum force backwards ... but that would have created another view blocker like the side Lego-platforms obstructed the view of the legs and feet. Not sure if I can recreate it for a rotational video ... this took over a week (on/off to design and assemble).

Overall ... I was very happy with the result ... hope I captured enough detail to warrant some visual recognition as a Starcraft II Thor reproduction/interpretation.

Women Build

Women of action from across the county pitch in at Miami Habitat’s sixth Women Build (And a few guys ;)))

Tiara Armstrong had a few new friends over to her house this weekend. Or, where her completed home will be by Christmastime.

More than 20 South Florida women came to Liberty City last Saturday to help build Tomika’s new house, kicking off Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami’s sixth Women Build. The volunteers are just some of the 300 women expected to help construct the Jackson family home during 14 build-days spanning the next four months.

The Women Build, which runs until Dec. 4th, is sponsored by the Miami Habitat ReStore, an open-to-the-public retail outlet for discounted home goods and supplies. All proceeds from ReStore sales are used to build homes like Tomika’s, though this is the ReStore’s first Women Build sponsorship.

Women Build is a volunteer program developed by Habitat for Humanity International that aims to recruit, educate and nurture women to build—and advocate for—simple, decent and affordable houses. Each year, thousands of women across the country – including many in Miami-Dade County – participate in Women Builds.

This season’s Women Build is the second such event hosted by Miami Habitat this year and is the third of ten Women Build homes to be built in the next five years.

Homeowner Tomika Jackson was thrilled to be working on her new home with so many area women. “Everybody has been so nice to me, so good, so wonderful, so helpful,” she said. “You know, I couldn't even want it another way.”

Volunteer and Women Build coordinator Stephanie Sylvestre took a larger perspective on the unique, by-women, for-women project: "It's all about women giving back, coming together and showing that we can do great things."

Got my Heated Build Platform parts from Ponoko today!

Things to fix in the next version:

- Bottom build platform magnet & bolt holes are in the wrong place.

- Need 0.4mm bumps instead of 0.1mm for better friction fit of perpendicular parts.

- Delrin was too thick for 3*2mm layers; was probably 0.1"=2.54mm thick. May simplify to two layers & fill gap anyway.

Toy wish list: vinyl cutter like CraftRobo for paper prototyping and thermochromic sheet cutting.

Using super glue to hold the pointy tips in place was the best discovery I've made when laying spars. It saves so much time, especially later when I need to pull all the staples out.

It's a huge mess. I'm hoping by moving it to the new room, I'll be able to straighten it up so that I can work on getting it sorted and organized.

Women Build

Miami Habitat is holding its seventh Women Build through December 3, 2011, in Liberty City. More than 200 women will come together to volunteer to build a home for partner family Tiara Armstrong and her five year old daughter Jamaria, just in time for the holidays. “My family was very happy and we cried tears of joy when we found out that I was accepted to the program,” said Armstrong. “Owning my own home will be a blessing!”

Women Build is a Habitat for Humanity International program underwritten by Lowe’s which brings together women from all walks of life to address the housing crisis facing millions worldwide. Since the program’s inception in 1998, Women Build volunteers have constructed more than 1,800 houses, including six in Miami-Dade County.

Miami Habitat’s Women Build is in line with its ongoing Liberty City Shine campaign, which aims to build or rehab 90 homes in Liberty City in the coming year. Women Build recruits, educates and inspires women to build decent and affordable homes for low-income families in their communities. Many women come to the Women Build site without previous construction experience and find their inner Rosie the Riveter as they learn new skills and make a positive impact in the community. Their leadership and service are changing lives.

Jesse Davidson sheds skin and bares all on Lizard Boy.

Approaching his writing from a traditional singer-songwriter position, Davidson’s songs have always held an electronic, ambient edge. And recent months have seen him close in on this genre spanning style with the release of his sophomore EP, Lizard Boy. A five track offering which shifts and transcends both musically and lyrically. Still grounded in the narrative lyric that is the domain of the singer-songwriter, the architecture of the songs have an experimental feel in their sparsity and instrumentation.

Full of lingering, wobbling synths and punctuated chords set against vaguely industrial beats, Lizard Boy echoes a similar ambience to outfits like Boards Of Canada. Though the term sometimes applied to those same artists, “IDM” (Intelligent Dance Music) has been criticised as derogatory in the past, taken at face value it feels like a good fit for Davidson’s style. Working with the elements that feed dance music; synths, beats and electronica, the whole exudes a tangible sense of a smart, considered approach in both the writing and the execution.

Opening with the slow groove Laika, the track perfectly introduces the delicate and skilful soundscapes that Davidson proves himself so adept at. A skittering drum beat injects the groove into the dreamy, synth heavy song. Double tracked vocals up the ambience, and diving straight in on this first track, finishes on a blissed out and jazz inspired drum solo. In his own words, Davidson describes the track as “A bloody jam”, and while it certainly has that vibe, it’s possibly the best executed jam I’ve come across recently.

Following track, Darling, dives a little deeper into experimentation. Started with the idea of writing a track entirely around a bass line, Davidson was interested in how “A lack of guitars and keys and other instruments like that could change the composition of a song and create a lot of space for the vocals.” These elements appear later, but judiciously placed as accents rather than key melodies.

One aspect of Davidson’s composition that resonates much more with electronica than folk, is the detached feel within his songs. However Lagoon stands out with a much more affecting sensibility; dipping his vocal deeper on the refrain, the chorus line “I know you’re trying to change too much right now” becomes an accent outside of the ambience. Final track Will You Find Me touches on some of this same emotion, with Davidson describing it as “The cheesy ballad with a big release at the end.”

But he still maintains that he’s “Quite fond of it though, despite its cheesiness and simple structure and what-not.” Cheesy is not exactly the term that comes to mind as a stripped back electric guitar strums through with a subdued, almost grunge-like feel. And the release at the end has more of a blissed out build, with swirling cosmic effects and big beats to usher in an almost psychedelic feel.

Having recorded the EP in London, at Lightship 95 – which bears a striking resemblance to The Boat That Rocked – perhaps the sixties influence permeated Will You Find Me? With it’s cavernous studios inside the boat’s interior, and set on the tidal Thames, there is an ebb and flow to Lizard Boy that echoes the inevitable rise and fall of the studios.

For Jesse Davidson it seems that age dragged in its clever counterpart pretty early on, as Lizard Boy holds a maturity and confidence well beyond his years. You can also catch him at this year’s Falls Festival in Byron Bay.

Gotta love SketchUp. I've finally started building my basement isolation booth/project studio.

The angled sections of wall are Pythagorean triple lengths on the inner dimensions - the wall face is exactly 5' wide.

I'm adding a 2' wide space for reconfigurable "room I/O" to each of the two 5' walls. That should make it easier to mount ventilation, electrical, networking and/or a small window. I'll add some sort of threaded bolt-holes to the inner and outer walls so things are securely mounted and I can get a firm pressure-seal to keep things reasonably isolated.

It's more of an experimental (and non-permanent) space than specifically an isolation booth, so I'm not worried as much about maximizing the isolation and perfecting the acoustics all in one shot.

length: 408 meters (102 studs)

Designation: SG-33 (Space Gun No. 33) 'Orbit Hammer'

Armament: x4 magnetic-repulsive plasma beam emitters, x2 photon displacement cannons, x1 twin Gauss Accelerators, x2 multi-phase antimatter beam projectors, x6 hellion-class missile silos, x2 charon-class nuclear cannons, x1 atomic remoleculiser beam, x2 psi-RAM cannons, x1 hybrid antimatter/voidmatter gridline disruptor.

Desc.: the Archeopterix-class medium frigate was the staple vessel supporting the Earth Defense Navy during the Patheon war. manufactured by Echelon Inc, the Archeopterix made a name for itself at the battle of Epsilon Octavius VII, where a group of carrier escorts bombarded the planet (and several Patheon ships) with their Gridline disruptors, setting the vacuum itself ablaze in a halo of green energy. Now primarily used by Aloysius Soran and the Gaia Fleet as heavy enforcement vessels, capable of deploying an entire legion of HARM suits from their internal bays. As with most Old Gaia tech, it is nearly impossible to replicate, and as such, numbers have dwindled.
