The White Mountains....Remarkably Remote, Surprisingly Close!

Located just an hour's drive from Fairbanks, Alaska, the one-million-acre White Mountains National Recreation Area offers stunning scenery, peaceful solitude, and outstanding opportunities for year-round recreation.

Summer visitors to the White Mountains pan for gold, fish, hike and camp under Alaska's 'midnight sun.' The Nome Creek Road provides access to two campgrounds, trails, a gold-panning area and a departure point for float trips on Beaver Creek National Wild River. In winter, visitors travel by ski, snowshoe, dog team and snowmobile to enjoy the 12 public-use cabins and 250 miles of groomed trails that make the White Mountains one of Interior Alaska's premier winter destinations."

Leaving Valkenburg I made my way to Nurburg for my visit to Nordschleife. On the way I drove through Kerpen, home of Michael Schumacher, 7 times Formula 1 World Champion.

Quite chuffed, as I made my way through the town I was soon to discover Michael's Kart & Event Center. I was just in time for it to be open, so a quick dash into a race suit & I was on his track, his karts for some great memories.

April #conservationlands15 #bucketlist: Bodie Hills, California, for Wildflowers, Wildlife and One-of-a-Kind Ghost Town!

California’s Eastern Sierra region is a dramatic transition zone between the snowcapped granite spires of the Sierra Nevada and the endless sagebrush covered uplands of the Great Basin. A visit at the right time of year will reward visitors with a diversity of wildflowers.

One great wildflower viewing area is just north of Mono Lake and east of Yosemite in the rolling Bodie Hills – hills being an understatement since they top out at over 10,000 feet! Because of their high elevation, wildflower blooms are later here than much of California – typically arriving in May-June on the lower slopes and into July on the highest peaks. Several back roads traverse the area and offer access to view the displays of phlox, penstemmon, and paintbrush to name a few of the many wildflower species. More than 100,000 acres of BLM lands cover most of the Bodie Hills and include several wilderness study areas.

This year’s bloom promises to be early and short due to the dry winter across much of California. However, even if you miss the peak bloom, there is no shortage of things to see in the area. Bodie State Park is the site of the best-preserved ghost town in California, and arguably in the U. S. Wildlife viewers can see antelope, mule deer, and if lucky, get a glimpse of a sage grouse. If you visit later, around early October, crisp clear nights will turn the scattered aspen stands to gold, giving a second opportunity to see the Bodie Hills in color.

#hexagenialimbata on Lake Almanor #flyfishing #bucketlist ☑️ #browntrout. Hex Hatch on Lake Almanor - My grandfather started coming to Lake Almanor after his return from WWII. For most summers since, my family has made the long drive north to relax at the lake. I found a passion for fishing on the lake, and in the streams that feed and drain it. Occasionally, when the water and wind were just right, we'd find a big yellow bug on the lawn, deck or trees. Curiousity led me to learn about Hexagenia Limbata -- the world's largest mayfly -- a trout's Big Mac. Each year, during the last two weeks in June, these giant bugs crawl out of the muddy lake bottom, swim up through the water column, and emerge at sunset to float like little yellow sail boats on the lake's surface. Giant trout, normally dwellers of the deeper regions of the lake, move with the bugs to gorge themselves. The fishermen follow. Unfortunatley for me, the timing of our family vacations never coincided with this ritualistic phenomenon. Fishermen fantasize; it's part of who we are. The dreaming is a big part of what we love about the sport. I've literally dreamt about this hatch on several occasions over the last 30 years. The Hex on Almanor has always been an unfulfilled line item in my bucket list -- until last night. Finding myself between jobs, and with a wonderful wife, I snuck away to chase the bugs, catch the fish, live the dream. Check. Check. And Check. How lucky am I?

Lifetime Dream # 55 of my list of 155: I will have a collection of the guitar string ends that I have used over the years, showcasing the amount of playing I have done. I will have one decanter filled with electric ends and acoustic string ends. I will etch the glass decanter, and keep them for display in my studio.

This is the second feature of this dream… www.flickr.com/photos/67522976@N00/5321364043/in/set-7215...

Many of my Lifetime Dreams are collections of things that basically sum up to an accomplishment. I always wanted some form of collection to show how much I have played on the guitar, and the ends of the guitar strings seemed a fairly logical example. I am absolutely in love with the Fender Super Bullet strings, using both .10 and .11 gauge strings (depending on the guitar). These are specifically designed to fit in the tail piece of the Fender Guitars, but I still love to use them on all my other guitars.

A note on this dream: when I change strings, it’s a process. I love taking my time, cleaning the guitar from fret wear and tear. It’s fun to change a few guitars at a time too. My tuner, and my wire cutters are invaluable. These are not my actual wire clippers that I use; the ones I use are in a kit still packed away from my move!

Panoramic of Tahiti from the Toatea View Point on Moorea. Don't miss this stop and view.

Cold, but worth it.

Jenny

My friend Jenny found a place that teaches trapeze lessons. My sister and I were ready to fly! Today was the day and it was AWESOME!!!

St Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) is the principal public square of Venice, where it is generally known just as la Piazza. All other urban spaces in the city (except the Piazzetta and the Piazzale Roma) are called campi ("fields"). The Piazzetta ("little Piazza/Square") is an extension of the Piazza towards the lagoon in its south east corner. The two spaces together form the social, religious and political centre of Venice

A remark usually attributed (though without proof) to Napoleon calls the Piazza San Marco "the drawing room of Europe."

Silver City Ghost Town – located an hour southwest of Boise, Idaho - is one of several mining towns that sprang up in the Owyhee Mountains after gold was discovered nearby in 1863. At its height in the 1880’s, Silver City grew into a prominent Idaho settlement, with a population of around 2,500 and approximately 75 businesses. The town even established the first daily Idaho newspaper and telegraph office. As mines became depleted around 1890, residents slowly moved away from Silver City. The last mining operation closed around World War II, although the town was never completely abandoned.

In 1972, the Idaho Hotel in Silver City was restored and re-opened. Now, visitors can enjoy partially-restored historical buildings and old mine sites. Home and building owners have title to the land directly beneath the structures, but the rest of this National Historic District is public land, managed by the BLM.

My bucket list.......

There are so many things on my bucket list that I want to do. Traveling, seeing sights, learning new things, making a difference, etc, etc.

The biggest thing on my bucket list though.....get married.

I want to be a part of something amazing. I want to develop a connection with someone more than just "hi, how was your week? Do anything fun? That's nice, Bye".

Right now though, this one particular item keeps eluding me. Its the one thing I can't do on my own. I can't make someone love me, I can't make someone want to be with me.

So for now, it's on my bucket list. I'm hoping someday I can cross it off.

Lecco was home base during my trip to the Monza Formula 1 Grand Prix. About 30 minutes away from the track it was not too far, but gave you a feeling of being on holiday.

A lovely town with the lake and mountains as a backdrop, wonderful town square & great food.
