February's #nationalconservationlands, BLM Winter Bucket List, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument in Arizona for Its Dark Sky Park Status

The Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument is a vast remote landscape where the only nighttime light comes from the stars. The International Dark Sky Association (IDA) recognized the unspoiled quality of its pristine and breathtaking night skies with an official IDA designation as “Parashant International Night Sky Province,” joining an elite group of other international Night Sky Places around the globe.

Twenty-two organizations throughout the southwestern United States supported the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument’s nomination for IDA’s “Dark Sky Park” status, including the scientific community. Its pristine “Gold Tier” night sky view creates prime research and discovery opportunities.

The scenery continues to impress during the day at this rugged corner of northern Arizona, with views stretching from the lower portion of the Grand Canyon to the pine clad peaks of Mount Trumbull and Mount Logan Wilderness Areas. Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument is jointly managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service.

Years ago, I set out on a journey to listen to the 500 Greatest Albums of All time and journal through them as I listened to them. A majority of the albums that I listened to were from the Rolling Stone list of top 500 albums, but some were also personal albums that really meant a lot to me and greatly influenced my life.

Today, I completed that journey…

I listened to some really great albums and discovered some really great music that I otherwise would never have experienced. Sadly, I also heard some albums that I hope to never hear again- but those were pretty few and far between. This was a great journey to take, and who knows maybe I’ll go through and craft a similar journey to take again someday!

Theme: Dream A Little Dream

Year Nine Of My 365 Project

I am in the process of replacing a few items on my Lifetime Dreams list, and one of the new bucket list items is to spend time at 100 waterfalls.

I have discovered the beautiful and enchanting experience of not just seeing a waterfall, but sitting next to it, hiking in and around it- feeling the breath it pours out. So I don't want to just go see 100 waterfalls... I want to go experience 100 waterfalls (two on the completed list so far!).

No doubt! #TorresLatinoAmericana #tower offers an exceptional night view of the #Mexico City. You can easily spot heavy traffic on the roads, huge Christmas trees 🎄, and various museums across the city. #Amazingview.

April #conservationlands15 #bucketlist: Bodie Hills, California, for Wildflowers, Wildlife and One-of-a-Kind Ghost Town!

California’s Eastern Sierra region is a dramatic transition zone between the snowcapped granite spires of the Sierra Nevada and the endless sagebrush covered uplands of the Great Basin. A visit at the right time of year will reward visitors with a diversity of wildflowers.

One great wildflower viewing area is just north of Mono Lake and east of Yosemite in the rolling Bodie Hills – hills being an understatement since they top out at over 10,000 feet! Because of their high elevation, wildflower blooms are later here than much of California – typically arriving in May-June on the lower slopes and into July on the highest peaks. Several back roads traverse the area and offer access to view the displays of phlox, penstemmon, and paintbrush to name a few of the many wildflower species. More than 100,000 acres of BLM lands cover most of the Bodie Hills and include several wilderness study areas.

This year’s bloom promises to be early and short due to the dry winter across much of California. However, even if you miss the peak bloom, there is no shortage of things to see in the area. Bodie State Park is the site of the best-preserved ghost town in California, and arguably in the U. S. Wildlife viewers can see antelope, mule deer, and if lucky, get a glimpse of a sage grouse. If you visit later, around early October, crisp clear nights will turn the scattered aspen stands to gold, giving a second opportunity to see the Bodie Hills in color.

On my bucketlist was this favourite spot of mine where a very good friend of mine Aline van Weert showed and produced some awesome shots with these fisherman nets. But it needs extremely low tide. 22nd June, unfortunately without Aline, with a small group of fans of this place from the photographers group Life on Pixels joined me to this fantastic photo spot! Aline thanks for the inspiration!

There’s nothing quite as spectacular as seeing a 200,000 pound southern righthand whale fly into air so effortlessly, exposing its whole body.

It was pure magic to see this just a few meters away from me!

Have you been whale watching before?

What is an National Conservation Area? From the vast deserts of western Nevada to the fog-shrouded coast of Northern California, the BLM’s National Conservation Lands has stewardship of 16 NCAs and five similarly designated lands in ten states. Each area is has its own unique congressional legislation guiding BLM stewardship and public use. They offer a wide range of recreation opportunities, from whitewater rafting and gold-medal trout fishing in the Gunnison Gorge NCA in Colorado to world-class rock climbing in Red Rock Canyon NCA in Nevada. These lands feature exceptional scientific, cultural, and ecological values. For example, the San Pedro Riparian NCA in Arizona supports over 350 species of birds while the Steese NCA in Alaska contains critical caribou calving grounds. They differ tremendously in landscape and size, the largest being Nevada’s 1.2 million acre Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon- Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area.
