BLM Winter Bucket List #17: Powderhorn Wilderness, Colorado, for Cross-Country Skiing across Alpine Tundra
The Powderhorn Wilderness in Colorado is found in a rugged, glacier-carved landscape of the northern reaches of the San Juan Mountains. The area consists of large expanses of alpine tundra, spruce forests, and several alpine lakes at nearly 12,000 feet in elevation. Breathtaking views of the San Juan Mountains are available in this wilderness. Above 12,000 feet are two high-elevation plateaus that make up the largest relatively flat expanse of alpine tundra in the lower 48 states.
The higher elevations of Powderhorn Wilderness area characterized by alpine tundra and high alpine lakes, such as Powderhorn Lakes and Devil’s Lake. During the winter months, visitors can enjoy this scenic area while cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

What is an National Conservation Area? From the vast deserts of western Nevada to the fog-shrouded coast of Northern California, the BLM’s National Conservation Lands has stewardship of 16 NCAs and five similarly designated lands in ten states. Each area is has its own unique congressional legislation guiding BLM stewardship and public use. They offer a wide range of recreation opportunities, from whitewater rafting and gold-medal trout fishing in the Gunnison Gorge NCA in Colorado to world-class rock climbing in Red Rock Canyon NCA in Nevada. These lands feature exceptional scientific, cultural, and ecological values. For example, the San Pedro Riparian NCA in Arizona supports over 350 species of birds while the Steese NCA in Alaska contains critical caribou calving grounds. They differ tremendously in landscape and size, the largest being Nevada’s 1.2 million acre Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon- Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area.

BLM Winter Bucketlist #8: Silverton Mountain Ski Area, Colorado, for Backcountry Skiing in Prime Powder Conditions
Thrill-seeking skiers with advanced skills in gliding down Colorado’s backcountry mountains will want to add Silverton Mountain ski area to their bucket lists. With an average snowfall of more than 400 inches per year, the ski area - the only in the U.S. located entirely on BLM lands - features guided, unguided, and heli-skiing on black diamond runs on more than 13,000 acres near Silverton, Colorado.
From mid-January through March, a single chair lift takes experienced skiers partially up Silverton Mountain ski area where there are no groomed runs and no cut trails. From the top of the lift, guided skiers hike five minutes to an hour to some of the best powder conditions in the nation along with large open bowls and steep, tight chutes.
Looking for an even greater challenge? Try unguided skiing and snowboarding via helicopter drops that allow for extreme runs deeper in the backcountry. For more information, visit www.silvertonmountain.com.

BLM Winter Bucket List #1: Steens Mountain CMPA, Oregon, for a Rugged Winter Adventure
The Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Area is 428,156 acres of public land offering diverse scenic and recreational experiences. The CMPA encompasses an extraordinary landscape with deep glacier carved gorges, stunning scenery, wilderness and wild rivers, and a rich diversity of plant and animal species. The 52-mile Steens Mountain Backcountry Byway provides access to four campgrounds, and the views from Kiger Gorge, East Rim, Big Indian Gorge, Wildhorse, and Little Blitzen Gorge overlooks are not to be missed!
In the winter, the more rugged and daring outdoors enthusiasts can cross-country ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile in a natural remoteness that goes beyond the concept of ‘no cell service’.

Spectacular in its beauty, the Headwaters Forest Reserve is also a vital ally in conservation efforts to protect the most iconic forest species in the Pacific Northwest. Located 6 miles southeast of Eureka, California, these 7,542 acres of public lands feature magnificent stands of old-growth redwood trees that provide nesting habitat for the marbled murrelet (a small Pacific seabird) and the northern spotted owl. Both species are listed as threatened under theEndangered Species Act, as are the coho salmon, chinook salmon, and steelhead trout that have important habitat in the reserve’s stream systems.
Joining forces, the federal government and the State of California acquired the land for the reserve in 1999 to protect these important resources. The historic value of a once busy mill town named Falk is also commemorated in interpretive signs along the Elk River Trail, which follows an old logging road to the now vanished community. The BLM partners with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to manage the Headwaters Forest Reserve as part of the National Landscape Conservation System.

#TravelTuesday with Guest Photographer Bob Wick to California’s Humboldt Coast!
A five hour drive north of San Francisco, California’s fog-shrouded Humboldt Coast is a land apart from the traffic and bustle of California’s urban centers. There are year-round photography opportunities here ranging from crashing winter storm waves to brilliant spring wildflowers; from towering redwoods to rushing mountain streams. The weather can be fickle so be prepared to adjust your photography for conditions. Here are three of my favorite places that can all be fit into one multi-day trip.
The King Range National Conservation Area is the largest patch of wilderness coastline on the west coast. 4,000 foot peaks rise majestically from the surf and almost 100 miles of hiking trails beckon to day hikers and backpackers. One of my favorite spring hikes is to the historic Punta Gorda Lighthouse. Fields of poppies and lupine peak here in May and last till early June. Photo tip: Bring a long telephoto lens and hike a bit further south to capture a rare colony of Stellar sea lions on the offshore rocks. For a good wildlife shot, always focus on the eyes to make sure they are sharp. Don’t be afraid to shoot many exposures to increase your opportunity to capture interesting behaviors.
An hour to the north, the Headwaters Forest Reserve encompasses the last large tract of old-growth redwoods to be placed under public protection. A level hiking trail along Elk River allows you to view restoration work and second-growth redwood along a moss shrouded stream corridor. If you are more adventurous, take the 9 mile round-trip trail to enjoy a taste of primeval old growth redwood. Photo tip: Photography at Headwaters is best on grey foggy or rainy days when soft light and wet vegetation brings out the emerald green colors of the vegetation. Find a point of interest to make your photo stand out. It might be a path winding through the trees, or a trillium blooming among the ferns. Also, consider having a person in the photo to lend scale to the massive trees.
Your trip won’t be complete until you head twenty miles further up the coast is the picturesque village of Trinidad. Its coastline is framed by offshore rocks and islands that make up a particularly majestic slice of the California Coastal National Monument. The area is a wildlife viewer and photographers dream. Birds such as black oystercatchers ply the shoreline rocks while seals and sea lions haul out just offshore. On the larger rocks, further offshore, thousands of marine birds nest in spring and summer. Photo tip: Time your photography at low tide along rocky coastlines like those in Trinidad and tide-pool life on the rocks will add interest to the foreground. Make sure to wipe your camera and lenses down after seacoast photography to remove salt residue.
February's #nationalconservationlands, BLM Winter Bucket List, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument in Arizona for Its Dark Sky Park Status
The Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument is a vast remote landscape where the only nighttime light comes from the stars. The International Dark Sky Association (IDA) recognized the unspoiled quality of its pristine and breathtaking night skies with an official IDA designation as “Parashant International Night Sky Province,” joining an elite group of other international Night Sky Places around the globe.
Twenty-two organizations throughout the southwestern United States supported the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument’s nomination for IDA’s “Dark Sky Park” status, including the scientific community. Its pristine “Gold Tier” night sky view creates prime research and discovery opportunities.
The scenery continues to impress during the day at this rugged corner of northern Arizona, with views stretching from the lower portion of the Grand Canyon to the pine clad peaks of Mount Trumbull and Mount Logan Wilderness Areas. Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument is jointly managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service.

Today, we’re heading over to Baldwin County, Alabama, where the BLM manages seven small beach front tracts. All of these tracts are designated critical habitat for Alabama beach mouse and contain primary dunes, the preferred habitat for this species. The tracts also provide nesting habitat for loggerhead sea turtles.
In fact, these beaches are one of the few areas in the U.S. that federally-threatened Loggerhead Sea Turtles use for nesting. Actually locating a sea turtle nesting spot - momma turtles like to hide and lay eggs at night - and watching eggs hatch are rare events. Volunteers regularly patrol the beaches and watch for signs of turtle nesting.
BLM Southeastern States employees and volunteers also maintain some of the areas and trails around the beach tracts. As a joint project, employees and volunteers defined the existing pedestrian pathway through the dunes with a unobtrusive fence. The marked path is intended to guide visitors to the beach and away from the unique habitat for wildlife.
Thanks to the volunteers whose work is critical to the conservation and recreation activities along the BLM-managed shoreline.

Photo Bucketlist Bird Achievement Unlocked!!! Rails are a group of small to semi Large wading water birds found all over the US. They, however, like to remain hidden in the shadows and out of sight. Recently, per the accidental discovery of a rare bird for MO, people have been flooding to a park to catch a glimse of it. On the flip side of this, they are making lots of reports of their findings and several Virginia Rails have been amoung them. It has also been noted that the rails have been behaving veryun-rail like. Upon arriving to the parking lot, this was very true as several Sora - the US's most common rail, were happily working the mud paying no attention to anyone. I photographed them for a while, in hopes the Virginias would appear with them. No luck at the first area, so a short walk to the other side of the grasses and BAM!! There it was! Right out in the open water, probing for food. I was carefully trying to creep on it to not scare it off but it became evident shortly after that it really didnt care about me, as long as I maintained some distance from it. The distance was rather minimal, so I fired away and got several awesome shots. While walking in the mud, the probe it with there long bill, which is super sensitive, looking for worms and other tasty aquatic treats. I spent quite a while taking photos and video of this rail, and I hope to return again soon for even more shots.
