She is the fastest animal in the world. The cheetah can run at speeds up to 80 miles per hour for up to a quarter of a mile. She can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5 seconds or less. Chances are that when you see her coming it's too late. She is built for speed and agility. She is a perfect predator. #BigCats #Bringit #Canon
Two young male lions, part of a local pride are seen atop a rock outcropping in the Serengeti. Adolescent males will usually hang out on the periphery of a pride until it is there time to leave an strike out a life on their own. They may live singly or more frequently will form bachelor prides with other males. These associations are fluid and change frequently when one male takes over a pride or another leaves the group to go out on his own. Life as a male lion is difficult and dangerous. Like all cats even the big cats of the Serengeti display the typical cat attitudes that we see even in out house cats. The Pied-billed Grebe are small aquatic birds with a particularly ability to actually take on water between their feathers, almost like a submarine taking on ballast. This allows them to dive easy, and sometimes swim with just the upper part of their head above water. The origins of the name, grebe, apparently allude to the very posterior placement of their feet. This helps them propel themselves more easily in water, but it can make walking on land a cumbersome task. Lucky for them that they spend almost all of their time in water. Their young spend the better part of the first few weeks riding around on their parent's backs. In the summer, Pied-billed Grebe's bills turn whitish, with a black band around it. It is said that the peregrine falcon is the worlds fastest animal, but it also may be the worlds most widely distributed raptor. Peregrines can be found just about everywhere on earth, with the exception of polar regions and rain forests. The largest ice-free land mass from which they are absent is apparently New Zealand. So why don't we see them all the time? Well, maybe we do but don't recognize them. In addition, they tend to be fairly secretive and when they see you they probably take to the skies. Peregrines, like eagles, were affected by the use of pesticides early last century. Their numbers have been increasing, and they were removed from the endangered species list in 1999. They may be the kings and queens of the Serengeti but there are times when only a mother's love will do. The female lion will raise her young cubs alone for the first 8 or so weeks of their lives. At that point she will integrate them into the pride. Young females will eventually become permanent members of the pride while most males will eventually leave to roam with bachelor prides until maturity. The family dynamics of lions are quite interesting. #BigCats #Bringit #Canon

My workout and run "suck balls" tonight. The pre-run workout was hot and sticky and my run was even stickier. Add to that equation that I forgot to pack fresh gym clothes and I had to run in day old gym clothes. After it was all said and done I was looking and smelling BITCH-NASTY! I made the walk of shame to my car and to my surprise look what I found. A note attached to my window that read "DROP AND GIVE ME 200! SLACKER"... don't think for a minute that I don't know who did it. Anyway... it made me smile. Thank You!
A male lion with his beautiful mane sits atop a rock outcropping watching the horizon intently. Lions are the second biggest cats in the world, after tigers. They are also the only cats that live in prides or groups made of up to several males, females, and cubs. All of the females in a pride are related. Males grow up in the pride but eventually leave to form to form bachelor groups, live alone, or take over another pride. A lion can live in captivity for over 20 years, however, male lions in the wild rarely live over 10 years, due to the large number of injuries they sustain. Similar, in a way, to the unified consciousness that lions sometimes seem to represent, these four beauties approach, four abreast, like a cold front moving in across the plains. Female lions are the hunters for their pride. Males will occasionally hunt also, but most of the hunting is done by the females of the pride. They do so with cold calculating accuracy, as if they belonged to a single consciousness. Few animals are as cute as kittens, and kittens can come in many sizes. These two lion cubs are likely about 8 weeks old. They have been sequestered from the pride by the mother since birth. They will soon join the pride. So how cute do you think they really are? #BigCats #Bringit
The injured cape buffalo repeatedly fends off the pride, alone and with the help of other herd members. Each time it tries to recover and rest the pride closes in, never giving the bull a chance to regain any strength. He is injured. His left front leg is broken. This injury is likely the reason he is being singled out. It is much less likely that the injury was inflicted by the lions, since none of them is reckless enough to try and approach the bull from the front. Even now, injured and weakened, the bull could easily inflict mortal injury on the lions. They feel him growing weaker, however. They remain patient and persistent. I find myself wishing that the bull would simply lose consciousness. His fear and suffering are all too apparent. I am bothered by watching, yet I cannot look away. It vexes me. On a rare instance like this, nature has made me uncomfortable. There is probably no better example of communal living and shared childrearing than that seen in the lion pride. For females, that means inclusion in a shared family structure from birth to death. They maintain close ties to their pride members and the eldest, healthy female generally remains the leader, or matriarch. Nature and hunger know no mercy. I have been reluctant to post some of these images, and have been sitting on them for almost two years. Certainly they are not appropriate for my children's book pages, but even for adults they invoke strong emotions. Amazement, shock, fear, awe, and sadness are but a few emotions that I feel each time I look at them. I watched this struggle go on for hours. I wished, somehow, that I might lessen the buffalo's pain and suffering. It's my nature. Is it purely human to feel empathy? Do we all feel it or only some. Although, if I were hungry enough, would I do the same thing? The questions that these images bring to my mind are endless. I am facinated with the big cats, yet nothing makes me realize their wild and savage side more than this. For the most part we have separated the population from killing needed to feed the hordes of humans that colonize this strange and complex world. The more developed the country, the more distant the connection. Snow bunting have one molt per year. This occurs during the summer season, however, they manage to change their plumage during winter by rubbing the colored tips of their feathers away, revealing only the remaining black and white feathers. It's quite a transformation that requires a conscious effort. A tender moment shared between a lion cub and its mother. The lioness will provide all the care for her young for about 8 weeks or so before introducing them to the rest of the pride. Once they are successfully introduced into the pride the responsibilities will be shared and the cubs safety and chances of survival will improve. Despite this, at least 50% of cubs don't survive their first year. There are dangers on the Serengeti even for the king of the "jungle." Once can only imagine the lessons that need to be learned and the stories that somehow must be told. #BigCats #Bringit #Canon

One of these birds is not like the other. Forster's terns and a lone Bonaparte's gull hover above the wet sand at Barnegat Light State Park in late autumn. Bonaparte's gulls are amongst the smallest gulls, larger only than the little gull. Can you find him? Forster's terns have a distinctive eye black eye patch that makes them easy to discern from other terns when they are in winter plumage. During the spring and summer months they are more difficult to distinguish from other terns, like the common tern. There may be smaller woodpeckers in the world, but the Downy Woodpecker is the smallest in North America. It's plumage is almost exactly the same as the slightly larger Hairy Woodpecker which inhabits the same areas of North America. Despite their similarities, they are not all that closely related. It would appear to be another example of convergent evolution, in which two species placed in similar environments evolve along the same lines. When Downy Woodpeckers drum loudly against wood and metal, they aren't doing so because they are eating or searching for food. They don't sing songs (although they have vocalization), but use the drumming sounds in the same manner. When eating, their pecking can be almost silent. Northern pintail ducks take off from the "flight deck" at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, in San Antonio, New Mexico. Pintails are large dabbling ducks. The elongated central tail feathers on the male give rise to its name.
Bosque del Apache's "Festival of the Cranes" begins this week. Cranes are not the only animals you can see at this wonderful refuge. A USA Today reader's choice survey just voted Bosque del Apache amongst the top birding locations in the country. Two young cheetah have their hunting skills put to the test when mom brings home a young gazelle, alive. She releases it so that her adolescent cubs will chase and hunt it down. They do so, over, and over again. For them to survive on their own they will have to be able to master the skills required for hunting. Unlike lions, cheetah live a predominantly solitary life, and these two will find themselves on their own, all too soon. Without the necessary training, they will be unable to provide and end up extremely hungry. On my way last night to my sunset spot I spotted this little bridge.. I had to turn around because the sun was perfect behind it... Thanks to the farmer who built it.. It makes for a great scene..
North beach, Mono Lake. We took a dirt road down towards the beach from the main road. The trail stopped about 3/4 of a mile short of the shore, and after that it was all untouched sand. Very serene.
This little bird was a treat for me, and also a first. They have been called snowflakes, but are regularly called "snow bunting". I have seen them for the last few weeks on Long Beach Island, but their extremely timid nature has made them just about impossible to photograph. These birds breed in the high arctic, returning there in spring when temperature can still dip below -30 degrees C. Few other passerine birds can winter as far north as snow buntings. During breeding season they are completely black and white, however, they only have one molt each year and don't really have an "alternate plumage". Let me explain! After the summer molt they have a brownish back, but looks are deceiving! Only the tips of the back feathers are colored brown. The remainder of the back feathers, underneath, are black! The birds eventually wear off all the feather tips by rubbing them on the snow, so that by breading season they are completely black and white! What an amazingly deceptive game they play, making their name unintentionally appropriate. This winter visitor spends it summers in the Arctic tundra. The Purple Sandpiper has one of the most northern winter ranges of any shorebird. I guess they just don't appreciate the heat! During the winter you can find them on rocky Atlantic beaches where they may frequently associate with Dunlin and an occasional Western Sandpiper. The rocks along the coast can be icy and slippery, so care must be taken when visiting.
