After running and throwing up quite a splash a coastal brown bear comes up without a fish. She looks confused, and I can almost hear the thoughts in her head, "Where did that fish go?" Fishing bears are unsuccessful frequently, but some bears are better than others at the hunt. The water here is still fairly deep and this allows a fish to escape more easily. When water is shallow, bears can sometimes drive a fish right out of water and onto land. One of the worlds largest cats seem no bigger than kittens atop a rock outcropping or kopje, on the Serengeti plains. Even the large stones, that seem to dwarf the lions, are no match for the vast expanse of land and sky that are the Serengeti. Lions will spend endless hours on these rock outcroppings. They give them a better vantage point for seeing long distances, and provide a modicum of safety from larger animals that might not take well to their presence. Lions also use the rocks to hide their young. Lions on these rocks can look out over their pride lands and watch for prospective prey while relaxing and sleeping during the heat of day. Doesn't sound like a bad life at all!

A bull elk nibbles at the edges of dry sagebrush that remains above the snow line in Yellowstone National Park. Elk are predominantly grazers. That means that they prefer to eat the tender, moist shoots of perennial grasses, but when the winter's snows begin to fall they begin browsing on a variety of deciduous and coniferous plants. As snow deepens, food sources become more scarce and animals descend from higher altitudes to lower valleys in hope of finding more food. This can bring some big animals into closer contact with humans. Care should be taken to keep your distance and disturbance to a minimum. A northern pintail duck flies off across the saltmarsh. Winter's sunlight bathes the phragmite covered fields with warm light. It is one of those sights that makes me think of autumn and winter. Northern pintail ducks are widely distributed around the globe. They are dabbling ducks that breed across the northern reaches of North America, Asia, and Europe. In winter they migrate south, some reaching the equator. Some actually make transoceanic journeys. Like many birds, they are skilled world travelers, capable of covering long distances in relatively short periods of time. With its fractured leg flailing a cape buffalo struggles to regain its footing after being taken down by the pride. Despite exhaustion, he will rise up two more times to fend off his attackers before finally succumbing to their patient, yet unrelenting attack. His death will go on to feed a succession of banquets, beginning with lions, then hyenas, followed by jackals, and vultures. A few other scavengers like marabou storks, will also slip in, here and there, during the hours that follow. By the end of the day there will be nothing left but bones. A young lion decides to take the easy street along with its sibling an mother. The road for lions, like most other big cats, isn't easy. Young males will eventually find themselves out of their birth pride. They will strike out on their own or form bachelor groups until they find a pride of their own. Defending that pride, however, is a full time job. Females will get to stay with their birth pride but that pride can and will be taken over by successive males. Each time that happens they risk losing their young cubs. Males that take over an existing pride will frequently kill any young cubs that are not their own. Sandhill cranes fly into the crane pools at Bosque del Apache NWR. They will spend the night wading in water that helps protect them from potential predators. Sandhills mate for life. Doesn't sound like wasted love to me! They choose a mate based on elaborate dancing displays and mating calls. Their songs echo over miles, and are incomparable!

A male leopard leaves his tree and approaches our vehicle. He walks just below my open window and stares me right in the eyes. For a second I wonder if he really might try to join us on safari? Or perhaps for a meal! Leopards are the smallest of the worlds "big cats." They are opportunistic feeders, and will eat just about anything they can catch. What about safari visitors in a can (aka, off road vehicle)? Leopards have strong jaws and are very agile. I must admit to a certain fascination with snow buntings. It's not that they seem to thrive in the frigid arctic temperatures that I find so interesting, though that alone should suffice. It's how the males change their appearance that seems so intriguing. Let's face it, there are plenty of birds that sport two plumage changes during the year. Their plumage changes are involuntary, however. They don't need to think about it. It just happens. Snow buntings only have one molt per year, and it happens in the late summer. The birds look like this one, with plenty of browns and yellows. Over the course of the winter, the males begin rubbing the tips of their feathers off. The tips are where the color is. The remainder of the feathers underneath are pure black and white. The back feathers are black and the belly feathers are white. So by the time that mating season comes around these birds are pure black and white. It takes a conscious effort to do this. I wonder who the first bunting was that decided to carry out this fashion trend, and why he decided to do so? In photography there is a variable period, just after sunrise and just before sunset, when blue light is more readily diffused and the sun (when shining) provides a warm glow. It is colloquially known as the "golden hour." In most instances the phenomenon is actually much shorter than an hour. On this particular evening the sun provided a wonderfully warm glow, giving us the opportunity to photograph a "golden" snowy owl. I wish the bird had taken to the air a few minutes earlier, when we had a bit more sunlight, but I'll take the shot and all its limitations. A magnificent bird, an astounding sunset and a pristine coastline! What more could one ask for? With head held high this alpha male, king of his pride, sits atop a rock outcrop basking in the sun. He looks out over his land. He will remain king until a younger stronger male displaces him from the pride. Life in the wild isn't easy but it's good to be the king while it lasts.

I learn something new about animal behavior almost every day I go out shooting. Saturday was no different. This is the last in a series of photos of a successful bald eagle hunt. I had never noticed the routine checking that bald eagles make once they have captured their prey. I could probably have captioned each image as follows: "I want it", "I got it", I'm taking it", "What is it." Although bald eagles have keen sight and can locate a fish along the surface of a river, they probably can't tell what it is they are after until they have caught it. Once in the air they routinely dip their heads to check on the catch. It would be interesting to see if they do the same when capturing prey from the ground. With feathers still damp from an overnight rain, a burrowing owl peeks out to see what the new day has brought. Burrowing owls are small owls that, well..., live in burrows! Though capable of digging their own burrows, they prefer to take over those abandoned by other creatures that dig, like prairie dogs, skunks, and armadillos. They stand less than 12 inches in height and nest in pairs. Though this one stands alone, its nesting pair is just inches lower, too timid to come up and say hello. Burrowing owls are also diurnal. They apparently hunt by day and night, capturing more insects by day, but more small mammals by night. Although constantly surveying the surrounding landscape for food and threats, they quickly become acclimated to my presence. As long as I remain relatively stationary they barely even take note of my presence. Foxes use body language and a variety of vocalizations to communicate with other foxes. Certain postures, like this one, are typical of a fox that is fearful or submissive. As another fox enters the area, this one lowers its body, arches its back, pins its ears back and shows its teeth, letting out a yelp like series of barks. Many times a submissive fox will simply run off. At other times, brief confrontations lead to rapid resolution of a foxes status. All went well for this fox, who managed to hang around for some time after this encounter. This bear is a sentimental family heirloom. I've had this bear since I've been a small boy (over 35+) years. He's a little worse for the wear, but still quite present and accounted for. I decided to give him a proper still life "portrait".
As part of this exercise, I also shot this same composition on Kodak T-Max ISO 100 BW 120 Film, Kodak Ektar ISO 100 Color 120 Film, and Kodak Portra ISO 160 Color 120 Film. This composition will potentially be a test run to be turned into an oil painting (maybe).

As stormy skies roll through the area a sleepy cat awaken. The cooler temperatures bring with it a desire for more activity. Lions typically sleep during the heat of the day. They are most active in the early predawn and evening hours, and frequently hunt at night. During the peak daytime hours when temperatures can be their hottest, lions can frequently be seen lounging around rock outcroppings or on the grassy plains of the Serengeti. This lioness sees something moving on the horizon. It is a herd of wildebeests. If they head in the right direction they may become a topic of lion conversation later in the day, and dinner by nightfall. The Serengeti is a wondrous place with something for every animal lover. #BigCats #Bringit #Canon

A male leopard lounging in a tree lets out a growl. I wonder what he's saying? Leopards are the smallest of the big cats. Their legs are short compared to their body length but their ability to climb trees is unparalleled. They have a large head and jaw size that allows them to hunt prey much larger than one might expect. It is not uncommon for a leopard to carry its prey high up into a tree to keep other predators and scavengers from stealing dinner. Their conservation status is considered "near threatened." Programs are being enacted in efforts to help create safe zones for pastoral communities living in proximity to these cats. Leopards are sometimes killed in retaliation for hunting of cows or goats. A bald eagle flying overhead sees a fish in the water. The bird makes a quick turn, then tucks and dives. It doesn't look like this could be intentional. Nor does it appear that dropping like a rock from the sky could turn out well, but just as quickly it turns and spreads its wings, gliding to the surface. The eagle can't delay the hunt and circle slowly overhead. Other eagles would swoop in and take the fish. Quick responses like this one must be accurate. If an eagle miscalculates the dive, it could hit the water! Unlike Osprey, that can take off after complete submersion, eagles must swim to shore or drown. Being an eagle has its inherent dangers. They are amazing birds!

The Mongagu's Harrier is a raptor of the harrier family. It is a long distance migrant, that spends its summers in Eurasia and winters in sub-Saharan Africa. They don't look all that different than the Northern Harriers of North America and can be easily confused with Pallid Harriers that inhabit the same regions. Like the Northern Harrier, they are graceful and agile fliers, frequently soaring or hovering low over land while searching for prey. This is a male Montagu's Harrier. The females are brown in color with yellow and white markings.
