I was out shooting the big storm that rolled through Brampton the other night... This is the train station in downtown Brampton.. with some luck the lightning strike came at the perfect spot..

Here is a GO train leaving Union Station on Friday evening after the base ball game...

The heaviest of North American owls, the Snowy, takes off from its perch. It will look for another place, not far away, but free from human encroachment. These beautiful birds pass their summers in the high arctic, where they raise their young and hunt for lemming and ptarmigan. Though they migrate south, they don't always make it this far south to New Jersey. Unlike many other owls, snowy owls are diurnal, hunting by day and night. They are elusive and skittish, and should be approached with caution and care. If they are overly bothered by human interaction they will frequently relocate. Cloudy weather has made photographing these birds ever so much more difficult lately. I do wish that they could stay all year! #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #SnowyOwls #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #Canon #Bringit #DrDADBooks #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

Second photo from the flower power series I'm working on. "Flower power was a slogan used during the late 1960s and early 1970s as a symbol of passive resistance and non-violence ideology. It is rooted in the opposition movement to the Vietnam War."

Add inquisitive to the list of characteristics attributed to the largest member of the genus, Vulpes, the Red Fox. Cunning and extreme adaptability are two other characteristics that make the red fox one of the most successful and numerous members of the order Carnivora in the northern hemisphere. They communicate with each other through a variety of changes in body language and vocalizations. A dominance hierarchy is apparent even after observing a small group of them for just a few minutes. Foxes give birth to their young, which we call kits, once a year, early in spring. Both the male and female care for the young. They are beautiful animals, however, in many place they are considered pests. They can also carry diseases like rabies. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #RedFox #Fox #DrDADBooks #Canon #Bringit #WildlifeConservation #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

A snowy owl takes to the air, staring at me as if I might be its next meal. It was one of those rare occasions when the owl actually took off in my direction. Big birds like the snowy will almost always take off into the wind. It was also one of those rare days when the predominant wind was out of the east, making the occurrence possible. These magnificent visitors from the north grace our shores irregularly during the winter season. Their appearance brings out scores of visitors, from birders to photographers. They, like many raptors, enjoy their privacy. If enough people show up they will frequently move off the beach and into the brush, making them a little harder to watch. #ILoveWildlife #ILoveNature #ILoveBirds #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #Canon #Bringit #WildlifeConservation #SnowyOwl #DrDADBooks #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

With ethereal beauty the snowy owl flies above the dunes along the New Jersey coastline. Dune grasses, gently blown by the wind, melt together into an undulating sea, as if in celebration of the flyover. The snowy owl is the ruler of two worlds, hunting by day and by night. They are probably best defined as crepuscular, enjoying most the time between the dark and light that we refer to as twilight. They are weary and solitary travelers from the north, and irregularly grace our shores with their presence. Many a human will travel far to catch a glimpse of these amazing birds. #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #ILoveBirds #SnowyOwls #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #Canon #Bringit #DrDADBooks #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

this is a long exposure of the Sunset on Friday evening at Wasaga Beach, Ontario... I love how the colour developed by shooting this as a long exposure.. it was a great evening...

The Purple Gallinule's apparent ability to walk on water has nothing to do with divinity and everything to do with physics! These medium sized birds are fairly light, and are able to spread their weight over an enormous surface area because of their extremely large feet. They don't actually walk on water, but they can walk on Lilli pads, giving them a similar appearance. These medium sized birds of fresh water marshes are members of the rail family. They construct their nests of twigs and dead leaves, placing them on a small hill of floating grass-like plant growth. So, even the nests float! #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #iLoveScience #WildlifePhotography in #Florida #Nature in #America #USA #PurpleGallinule #Canon #DrDADBooks #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

A twisted pile of scrubby branches makes the perfect roost for this young peregrine falcon. Perching peacefully, it is hard to imaging the speed and ferocity at which this bird will hunt. Capable of speeds of 200 miles per hour, they can snatch another bird right out of the sky, bringing it down for a meal. I watch as its head darts back and forth at the site and sound of passing passerines. The "hunting stoop," at which they attain great speeds, is a controlled dive. Any bird can fall, but peregrines dive with great speed, agility, and remarkable accuracy. Remarkable as they are in flight, they also beautiful birds simply standing still. The peregrine falcon, a remarkable force of nature and evolution. #ILoveBirds #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #Canon #DrDADBooks #Bringit #Birding #PeregrineFalcon #Peregrine #Falcons #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

286/365 I am so ready for the long weekend.

A close up shot of the USA side of Niagara Falls..

We now interrupt your regularly scheduled Wall-E cuteness to bring you a tonemapped photo of today's severe thunderstorm with hail up to half the size of golf balls. I took this from my living room window.

I don't know what that thang is BUT there was purported tornado damage one county over...

#67 in Explore for 3/29/09 when I checked via Scout, may have changed by now, I think it's in the 70's as of this morning.

Now down to #317...

Anyway, I don't think I ever want to be this close to a nascent tornado ever again. I don't think it touched down anymore after causing some damage in neighboring Lancaster County.

Searing heat and distance degrade this image, rendering it less than optimally sharp but giving it a painterly appearance. I love the image for the energy it conveys. It is an explosive moment, when this cheetah's attempt to separate a young wildebeest from the herd is unsuccessful, and she turns her sights on a much larger male. The male wildebeest is a much less preferable target. It would be at the upper limit of her abilities to hunt this animal, and only rarely do cheetah attempt to hunt full grown wildebeest. Cheetah may be the fastest land animal in the world, however, their speed is very short lived. What they don't catch in about 30 to 60 seconds won't be caught. They are only successful less than 50 % of the time. The wildebeest in this frame manage to escape her best attempts, but she is successful at hunting a young gazelle within the hour. #iLoveNature #iloveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Tanzania #Nature in the #Serengeti #Africa #Ndutu #Cheetah #DrDADBooks #Canon #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

When mom returns to the kopje, she finds her cubs safe and waiting. They are overjoyed to see her. They can actually hear her when she is still quite a distance away, and gather together, staring off into the distance as if the one who sees her first might win a contest. When she arrives, there are greetings all around, with plenty of head butts, nuzzling, and kisses. After nursing her cubs she takes them out for a little exercise, and introduces them to the world beyond the kopje. It's a young cub's life in the Serengeti, and when it's good, it's great! #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Tanzania #Nature in #Africa #Serengeti #Lions #LionCubs #Canon #Bringit #DrDADBooks #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

*** 7/3 UPDATE - Here's a video I made of all the lightning activity I was able to capture. Enjoy! vimeo.com/99810138

This is from another Canon 7D I had setup with an 8mm fisheye lens on it. I'm currently working on time-lapse of everything so stay tuned.

Back on June 23rd 2010 I got one on video which you can view at vimeo.com/12816548

Crazy!

A snowy owl's eyes widen and he takes on a defensive posture as a peregrine falcon, seen in the foreground, rapidly approaches. Had this peregrine taken a dive, the owl would have raised its wings in a defensive maneuver. Peregrine falcons and snowy owls inhabit similar ecological niches, putting them in direct competition. Though I have seen peregrine falcons attach snowy owls on several occasion, I have never seen a snowy owl take the offensive. Despite harassment, I have never seen direct contact between the two. Though peregrines are fast, snowy owls would be formidable opponents. It's life in the fast lane! #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #SnowyOwl #Canon #DrDADBooks #Bringit #Photography #Wildlife #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

Indigo Bunting

Petrifying Woods, Kenosha Wisconsin

The indigo bunting (Passerina cyanea) is a small seed-eating bird in the family Cardinalidae. It is migratory, ranging from southern Canada to northern Florida during the breeding season, and from southern Florida to northern South America during the winter. It often migrates by night, using the stars to navigate. Its habitat is farmland, brush areas, and open woodland. The indigo bunting is closely related to the lazuli bunting and interbreeds with the species where their ranges overlap.
