One of these birds is not like the other. Forster's terns and a lone Bonaparte's gull hover above the wet sand at Barnegat Light State Park in late autumn. Bonaparte's gulls are amongst the smallest gulls, larger only than the little gull. Can you find him? Forster's terns have a distinctive eye black eye patch that makes them easy to discern from other terns when they are in winter plumage. During the spring and summer months they are more difficult to distinguish from other terns, like the common tern. It is a pleasure to watch these beautiful birds on a sunny, winter-like day on the beaches of New Jersey. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildife #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #Gulls #Terns #Canon #Bringit #DrDADBooks #Birds #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
There may be smaller woodpeckers in the world, but the Downy Woodpecker is the smallest in North America. It's plumage is almost exactly the same as the slightly larger Hairy Woodpecker which inhabits the same areas of North America. Despite their similarities, they are not all that closely related. It would appear to be another example of convergent evolution, in which two species placed in similar environments evolve along the same lines. When Downy Woodpeckers drum loudly against wood and metal, they aren't doing so because they are eating or searching for food. They don't sing songs (although they have vocalization), but use the drumming sounds in the same manner. When eating, their pecking can be almost silent. Basically, woodpeckers are birds with a beat! #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #Canon #DrDADBooks #Bringit #DownyWoodpecker #Woodpeckers #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

Northern pintail ducks take off from the "flight deck" at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, in San Antonio, New Mexico. Pintails are large dabbling ducks. The elongated central tail feathers on the male give rise to its name.
Bosque del Apache's "Festival of the Cranes" begins this week. Cranes are not the only animals you can see at this wonderful refuge. A USA Today reader's choice survey just voted Bosque del Apache amongst the top birding locations in the country. It's well worth the trip! #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #NewMexico #BosquedelApacheNWR #Wildlife in #America #Nature #Canon #Bringit #DrDADBooks #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
Two young cheetah have their hunting skills put to the test when mom brings home a young gazelle, alive. She releases it so that her adolescent cubs will chase and hunt it down. They do so, over, and over again. For them to survive on their own they will have to be able to master the skills required for hunting. Unlike lions, cheetah live a predominantly solitary life, and these two will find themselves on their own, all too soon. Without the necessary training, they will be unable to provide and end up extremely hungry. It takes more than just speed to hunt successfully in the Serengeti, a lesson that the cheetah knows well. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Tanzania #Nature in #Africa #Serengeti #Cheetah #BigCats #DrDADBooks #Canon #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photoftheday
On my way last night to my sunset spot I spotted this little bridge.. I had to turn around because the sun was perfect behind it... Thanks to the farmer who built it.. It makes for a great scene..
North beach, Mono Lake. We took a dirt road down towards the beach from the main road. The trail stopped about 3/4 of a mile short of the shore, and after that it was all untouched sand. Very serene.
This little bird was a treat for me, and also a first. They have been called snowflakes, but are regularly called "snow bunting". I have seen them for the last few weeks on Long Beach Island, but their extremely timid nature has made them just about impossible to photograph. These birds breed in the high arctic, returning there in spring when temperature can still dip below -30 degrees C. Few other passerine birds can winter as far north as snow buntings. During breeding season they are completely black and white, however, they only have one molt each year and don't really have an "alternate plumage". Let me explain! After the summer molt they have a brownish back, but looks are deceiving! Only the tips of the back feathers are colored brown. The remainder of the back feathers, underneath, are black! The birds eventually wear off all the feather tips by rubbing them on the snow, so that by breading season they are completely black and white! What an amazingly deceptive game they play, making their name unintentionally appropriate. Even bunting, this little bird makes it to first! #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #ILoveBirds #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #Birding #Wildlife #Canon #Bringit #DrDADBooks #Photography #SnowBunting #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
This winter visitor spends it summers in the Arctic tundra. The Purple Sandpiper has one of the most northern winter ranges of any shorebird. I guess they just don't appreciate the heat! During the winter you can find them on rocky Atlantic beaches where they may frequently associate with Dunlin and an occasional Western Sandpiper. The rocks along the coast can be icy and slippery, so care must be taken when visiting. A slip and dip in the chilly Atlantic probably wouldn't be all that much fun, but if you bundle up warmly, a visit to the shore can be an eye opening experience this time of year. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #PurpleSandpiper #Shorebirds #Canon #DrDADBooks #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

The phrase, "birds of a feather, flock together" could never be less true that during the winter season along the New Jersey shore. Groups of snow bunting can be seen together with house finches, and apparently not infrequently, the horned lark. Last weekend I even saw tree swallows flying in close proximity to snow buntings. The horned lark is most frequently seen during the winter season on open ground, foraging for seeds. They also nest on the ground. No one really knows the etymology for the phrase, "on a lark," which suggests something being done in a joking or prank-like fashion. I don't think I'll be able to shed any addition light, but I was happy to see this pretty little bird, along with others at the Jersey shore. #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #ILoveBirds #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #WildlifeConservation #Canon #Bringit #DrDADBooks #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
A young big horn sheep nibbles at the remains of summer's dry grasses not far from Yellowstone's North entrance. As the weather grows harsh, and the snows begin to accumulate, big horn sheep descend from their summer retreats high up in the mountains to lower altitudes. Here they can still find some of the grasses that they need for sustenance. Winter's dry grasses don't have all the nutritional value of those found in growing months, but together with the fat they store during the early season, it helps them survive. The little horns on the young sheep will grow much larger with time. Though males have the largest horns, even females have horns that I'd prefer not to meet head on. #IloveNature #ILoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Montana #YNP #YellowstoneNationalPark #Nature in #America #BigHornSheep #DrDADBooks #Canon #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

Fossil records show that sandhill cranes were here 2.5 million years ago. Some fossils suggest that sandhill like ancestors were around as long as 10 million years ago. One need only hear the rolling calls of sandhills echoing through the damp dimly lit morning air to feel like you are listening to a time before mankind walked the earth.
Sandhills have grey plumage, however, this becomes stained and worn, and many birds have a rusty appearance. A red patch on their heads is actually skin rather than feathers. They have a long dark bill and legs, supremely adapted for roosting in deep water ponds and snatching up invertebrates, seeds, and vegetation. They migrate from the northern portions of northern continents during the winter. There are non-migratory populations in some southern regions. People travel long distances to see one of America's largest birds. Watching them cautiously approach, I begin to wonder if perhaps sandhill cranes come to see us too? #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #NewMexico #Nature in #America #USA #Wildlife #Canon #DrDADBooks #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

The front of UT (Uniqlo T) in Harajuku in the summer of 2009. On the front window of the shop there is a giant image of the J-pop duo Puffy AmiYumi and the text "Bring It!". Uniqlo and Puffy were doing a collaboration on some t-shirts (including the "All Because of You" t-shirt that Ami is wearing) as a cross promotion with the duo's "Bring It!" DVD.

These young cubs were out exploring on the rock outcropping were they were left by their mother. They have been taught not to venture beyond the rocks, as their are dangers on the open plains. Their mother returns during the day to feed them but they spend much time on their own. Soon she will introduce them to the rest of the pride where they will have more protection, but for now the young ones stick together separate from the pride. The cub on the left almost seems camera shy as it suddenly nibbles on the plant nearby. #BigCats #Bringit #Canon
The Northern Mockingbird is a fairly common bird. Yet, this bird made me take pause, and for a moment I was unsure of what I was seeing. In an effort to stay warm, on this cold day at Chincoteague, NWR, it had plumped up its feathers dramatically. The usually slender bird was a chubby as a cherub. By trapping air between its feather the bird creates an extra thick layer of insulation against the cold. The process isn't characteristic of mockingbirds alone.
The Northern Mockingbird is a consummate singer. At certain times of year it will sing throughout the day, and sometimes also at night. Males tend to sing more than females, and a male may have as many as 200 songs in its repertoire. What the mockingbird may lack in visual color they more than make up for with joyous melody. #iLoveBirds #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Virginia #Nature in #America #USA #NorthernMockingbird #PickYourPark #Canon #DrDADBook #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
A Little Blue Heron perches atop a branch at the Big Cypress National Preserve in southwestern Florida. Little blue herons are medium sized herons that are somewhat unique among herons. Their juvenile offspring are completely white in color, and remain so until their second year. They can be easily confused with Snowy Egrets. Because they lack some of the longer plumes characteristic of some of the other herons and egrets, they escaped decimation by hunters in the late 1800's. Back then, birds were hunted extensively for their feathers that were used for making hats. The leg color of little blue herons can be a bit confusing, and is listed differently at various sites. Their legs can vary in color from green to green grey or grey. Now that I find very interesting! Maybe I'm just easily amused? #ILoveBirds #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Florida #Nature in #America #USA #LittleBlueHeron #Canon #Bringit #DrDADBooks #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

I can't say why but I know that as far back as I can recall the Cheetah has been my favorite cat. When I try to figure it out it doesn't really make sense. Their heads are too small, their legs are too long. Their eyes are way too big! Their chests seem much too deep for the rest of their body and their waists are way too thin. Put them all together and they have unparalleled beauty. I can't say why but they are my favorite cat. #BigCats #Bringit #Canon

Being the king of the pride may sound great, but it has its drawbacks. The most serious is that you can't lose in battle or you may lose your life. This male lion is the king of his pride. He is returning to the pride now that the hunt is over, to feast on the kill. He took part in the hunt briefly, and then moved off to let the females and younger males continue the hunt. His face shows the scars of previous battle won. Winning doesn't come without injury. Today he enjoys the spoils as a leader, but his days in the sun will someday end, as they do for all. It's life in the wild for lions, and although it is truly a walk in the park (wildlife park, that it), it isn't easy. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildife #WildlifePhotography in #Tanzania #Nature in #Africa #Serengeti #Lions #Canon #Bringit #DrDADBooks #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
Lion cubs playing together appear to be singing a duet, arm in arm. A lioness will give birth to her litter in an isolated den. She will generally not integrate herself and the cubs into the pride for 6 to 8 weeks. During the day she will leave them to hunt for food. At times, more than one lioness from a pride will give birth at the same time. They may share their cub rearing duties, including nursing the young. Having more than one lioness to share the task increases the chances of survival for the cubs. #BigCats #Bringit
