Two male African elephants approach after a long walk across a baking Serengeti. Male elephants are pushed to the periphery of matriarchal groups as they mature and eventually move off to live on their own. They frequently find company in other males, while the females remain with their matriarchal groups. It's a bachelor's life for male elephants, in a land that makes the largest of terrestrial animals seem tiny. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Tanzania #Nature in #Africa #Serengeti #Elelphants #Canon #DrDADBooks #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

The mysterious Snowy Owl magically and erratically appears on our shorelines during the winter season. It is a time of year when most of us prefer to stay inside and cuddle up with a heavy sweater, a cup of hot coco, and a good book or movie. I much prefer to bundle up and head out to what is left of the great wild outdoors. The absence of but a few people makes some of these places and encounters even more special. On this day, a cold northeast wind pounded the coast. Beach erosion was treacherous, and reaching my destination was less than a sure thing, as I drove along the beach. There was not another human in sight. My presence, however, was not tolerated well by this great white ghost, and twice as I approached, he took to the air. At a long distance I could see that he was having difficulty staying protected from the north wind. I decided that it was best to leave him be. He came to rest behind a bramble, on a small due. I watched from a long distance as the wind buffeted his ghostly feathers, and I wondered if he dreamt of warmer summer days, hunting for lemming on the tundra of extreme North America. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlfie #iLoveBirds #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #SnowyOwl #Canon #DrDADBooks #Bringit #WildlifeConservation #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
A giraffe meanders through the brush in Tanzania. Giraffes are supremely adapted for eating acacia, which is abundant in Tanzania. This thorny group of plants would otherwise make a difficult, if not painful meal for many. In addition to its long neck, which gives it access to branches out of reach to most, the giraffe has a long prehensile tongue and upper lip. This allows it to pull off tender leaves and avoid the long thorns, which are characteristic of the acacia plant. Giraffes are ruminants. That means that they regurgitate, re-chew, and swallow what they have eaten. Regurgitating with such a long neck would seem no easy feat. Giraffes have specialized strong esophageal muscles that allow them to perform this necessary task. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Tanzania #Nature in #Africa #Serengeti #Canon #DrDADBooks #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
Today my mind wanders back to a place that I treasure for many reasons. It is a place where wild creatures still roam free, even though many are threatened with poaching. It is the birthplace of humanity, and I could not help but feel that I had returned home the first time I set foot there.
It is sometimes difficult to imagine the ferocious cats that these inquisitive cubs will become. It is just as amazing to watch them interact, and realize that they act no differently than the majority of our housecats. Playful, naughty, and a bundle of frolicking fur, it seems that cats will be cats, no matter where they are. #iLoveWildife #iLoveNature #iLoveCats #WildlifePhotography in #Africa #Nature in #Tanzania #Canon #Bringit #DrDADBooks #Picoftheday #Photography #Photooftheday
I found this great stack of Hay bales on my drive in the country... great finds this time of year...
I found this little hunk of snow frozen on the one pond, and with that little bit of water on the ice it gave me that prefect reflection... great find...
A male lion rests in the shade during a hot morning on a outcropping on the Serengeti plains. He does appear to be seated on a throne. Every few minutes he would open his eyes, without moving his head, to see what was going on. #BigCats #Bringit
It's always wonderful to see something new for the first time. It was more than simply great to see this harbor seal lounging on a New Jersey beach yesterday morning, in the early morning hours. Harbor seals are fairly common, and I have seen many swimming in the coastal waters of New Jersey, but I've never seen one on the beach. In the United States it is illegal to hunt seals. They are protected by the Marine Mammals Protection Act of 1972. They spend most of their time in the water, but will haul-out to rest ashore for a variety of reasons. It is rare to see them do so, however, in the presence of humans (at least in this part of the country). Perhaps I simply need to get out in the early morning more often! #ILoveWildlife #ILoveNature #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #HarborSeals #CommonSeals #Canon #Bringit #DrDADBooks #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
doing some demo work at home and then I check the back of some bricks.. I found Milton Brick on them, I didn't know Milton had a brick company.. the house is showing her age... :)
Who said lions don't climb trees? In general, they don't! But in some areas, like this one in the Serengeti, climbing trees during the heat of the intense midday sun helps lions cool off. Six lions (one not visible above) have decided to make this acacia an afternoon hangout. Wish I could have this one in my back yard! #ILoveWildlife #ILoveNature #WildlifePhotography #Lions #Tanzania #Serengeti #Canon #BigCats #Bringit #Canon
This is my 5th photo for the black and white photo challenge. Three trumpeter swans meandering along the snowy banks in Yellowstone National Park. In general, trumpeter swans form monogamous pairs that mate for life. They can live in excess of 20 years. At times, if a mate dies, the remaining bird will form another pair bond, however, at times they will never mate again. Trumpeters are the heaviest living birds in North America and the largest waterfowl. #IloveNature #ILoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #YNP #YellowstoneNationalPark #Nature in #America #USA #BlackandWhitePhotoChallenge #Canon #DrDADBooks #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
I find it interesting that relativity applies to all things, and not just physics. The largest land animal in the world is but a speck on the Serengeti plains. Dwarfed by the grandiose sky, the elephants march slowly and steadily toward life giving water. They know it is there from a dozen miles away. We cannot smell water even if it is placed directly in from or our noses. They can find it long before they can see it. Relativity....
The Serengeti plains seem to go on to infinity. They host the largest migration of land mammals in the world. But even the endless plains are limited by a seemingly bigger sky, and the migrations of avian species dwarf those of terrestrial beings, both in number and distance. Relativity.... My time in Africa is always short, yet, on those dry, hot afternoons minutes stretch on into hours. Days filled with wonder never seem to end, but in the end they are over all too fast. Relativity.... When I think of my last visit to that iconic continent it almost seems like years, but remembering specific encounters sometimes seem like yesterday. Relativity....

This is the forth photo I'm posting for the black and white photo challenge. Bison are well adapted for the harsh winters they endure. A thick coat of fur and thicker layers of fat help protect them from the elements. They use their large heads to plow their way through deep snow and to uncover the remnants of summer grasses that help them to survive. This is why they can commonly be seen with snowy faces during winter months. When the snow is deep they will follow, single file, while one bison blazes a trail. In places like Yellowstone, bison will make use of some of the park's thermal features to help stay warm. #IloveNature #ILoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Wyoming #Nature in #YNP #YellowstoneNationalPark #Wildlife in #America #USA #Canon #BlackandWhitePhotoChallenge #DrDADBooks #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
The flowers in this one are more subtle. Can you spot them?
Eighth photo from the flower power series I'm working on. "Flower power was a slogan used during the late 1960s and early 1970s as a symbol of passive resistance and non-violence ideology. It is rooted in the opposition movement to the Vietnam War."
Shooting at the Canadian Raptor Conservancy, my friend John of Insight Imaging, got right up close to get his shots...
Got new boots. They're a little big but they'll do, in a pinch.
Now, If I can just get Britney out of my head, it'll be a semi-good day... (Boy don't try to front, I know just, just what you are...)
Unthreatened and at peace, a red fox stops for a quick snooze, its bright orange coat in sharp contrast to the stark white snow. Foxes in this area tend to establish home ranges, marking their territory with urine, as many other animal species do. They live in family groups, sometimes sharing joint territories. Frequent disputes and challenges occur. They are relatively short lived and fairly tame. This fox obviously feels at home in this location and wasn't even threatened by my presence. Since I was laying on the ground, perhaps it thought that I was also napping! #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #RedFox #Fox #DrDADBooks #Canon #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
A visitor from the Arctic snuggles up to some branches on a balmy 32 degree morning along the Jersey Shore. Snowy owls irregularly show up on our shorelines during winter, returning to the Arctic in spring. A fabulous sunrise colors this almost completely white male in shades of pink and mauve. Like me, he seems mesmerized by the colors, that in days of old would have stood as a warning to sailors. Perhaps it signals to this great bird that there will likely be many visitors to see him today. And like our friend the peregrine, he is jealous about his sky. Too many visitors will send him looking for another patch to call his own. Unlike most owls, snowy owls are diurnal feeders, feeding by day and night. They are also the largest owls, by weight, in North America.

Despite their genetic lineage, which suggests that they are closer to cats than dogs, hyenas have no fear or concern about water. They are definitely not your house cat! A favorite pastime comes in the form of wallowing in mud holes. Tire tracks along the dirt roads provide great places for water to accumulate after brief rains. Stopping in for a dip helps provide relief from the heat and insect pests. It provides onlookers with an entertaining sight but for the hyena it's no laughing matter. Relief from the midday sun helps them survive from inhospitable heat. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Tanzania #Nature in #Africa #Hyena #DrDADBooks #Canon #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday
4 week old cheetah cubs are seen here hiding in a tuft of grass on the Serengeti. Mom was close by on the other side of the tuft. Cheetahs are the fastest land animal in the world, able to run upwards of 75 mph for distances of up to about 1/4 of a mile. They can accelerate from 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds! They exhibit very little genetic variability, so much so that skin from one cheetah can be transplanted to another without rejection. Because of habitat loss and predation of young their survival is in peril. It is likely that no more than one of these beautiful cubs will survive the year, and very possible that none will make it. There are areas in South Africa where the young are being protected and supported. This is a prospect that may need to be undertaken elsewhere if we are to see them survive. #Tanzania #Africa #ILoveWildlife #ILoveNature #ILoveAfrica #Cheetah #CheetahCubs #Canon #Bringit #BigCats
this is a waterfall just a little outside of Thunder Bay... this is another great stop you need to do while up there...
The American Bald Eagle is a master of hunting. Keen sight allows this bird to see its prey for up to a mile away. When fishing the eagle dives for the water but must stop short of coming in complete contact. In general, only its feet will break the air water interface. On the occasion that an eagle miscalculates, it may find itself immersed. Unlike the osprey that can free itself and fly away, the eagle must swim into the shallows or die. This eagle is about to pluck a fish from just below the surface of the river. It's a magnificent site, unless of course, you are a fish! #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #Wildlife in #Maryland #Nature in #America #USA #BaldEagles #Eagles #DrDADBooks #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday #Canon #Bringit
Sandhill cranes fly into the crane pools at Bosque del Apache NWR. They will spend the night wading in water that helps protect them from potential predators. Sandhills mate for life. Doesn't sound like wasted love to me! They choose a mate based on elaborate dancing displays and mating calls. Their songs echo over miles, and are incomparable!

One of the worlds largest cats seem no bigger than kittens atop a rock outcropping or kopje, on the Serengeti plains. Even the large stones, that seem to dwarf the lions, are no match for the vast expanse of land and sky that are the Serengeti. Lions will spend endless hours on these rock outcroppings. They give them a better vantage point for seeing long distances, and provide a modicum of safety from larger animals that might not take well to their presence. Lions also use the rocks to hide their young. Lions on these rocks can look out over their pride lands and watch for prospective prey while relaxing and sleeping during the heat of day. Doesn't sound like a bad life at all!

A northern pintail duck flies off across the saltmarsh. Winter's sunlight bathes the phragmite covered fields with warm light. It is one of those sights that makes me think of autumn and winter. Northern pintail ducks are widely distributed around the globe. They are dabbling ducks that breed across the northern reaches of North America, Asia, and Europe. In winter they migrate south, some reaching the equator. Some actually make transoceanic journeys. Like many birds, they are skilled world travelers, capable of covering long distances in relatively short periods of time. They are birds that favor open wetland habitats. #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #Ducks #Pintails #NorthernPintails #WildlifePhotography in #NewJersey #Nature in #America #USA #Canon #DrDADBooks #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
After running and throwing up quite a splash a coastal brown bear comes up without a fish. She looks confused, and I can almost hear the thoughts in her head, "Where did that fish go?" Fishing bears are unsuccessful frequently, but some bears are better than others at the hunt. The water here is still fairly deep and this allows a fish to escape more easily. When water is shallow, bears can sometimes drive a fish right out of water and onto land. Now that is an amazing sight! #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #ILoveBears #CoastalBrownBears #Brears #BrownBears #LakeClarkNationalPark #Wildlifephotography in #Alaska #DrDADBooks #Canon #Bringit #Wildlife in #America #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
A young lion decides to take the easy street along with its sibling an mother. The road for lions, like most other big cats, isn't easy. Young males will eventually find themselves out of their birth pride. They will strike out on their own or form bachelor groups until they find a pride of their own. Defending that pride, however, is a full time job. Females will get to stay with their birth pride but that pride can and will be taken over by successive males. Each time that happens they risk losing their young cubs. Males that take over an existing pride will frequently kill any young cubs that are not their own. It's not always an easy road for lions. #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #ILoveTanzania #ILoveAfrica #WildlifePhotography #Tanzania #Lions #Canon #BigCats #Bringit
I learn something new about animal behavior almost every day I go out shooting. Saturday was no different. This is the last in a series of photos of a successful bald eagle hunt. I had never noticed the routine checking that bald eagles make once they have captured their prey. I could probably have captioned each image as follows: "I want it", "I got it", I'm taking it", "What is it." Although bald eagles have keen sight and can locate a fish along the surface of a river, they probably can't tell what it is they are after until they have caught it. Once in the air they routinely dip their heads to check on the catch. It would be interesting to see if they do the same when capturing prey from the ground. At least there they can identify the animal they about to capture before they make the catch. #ILoveNature #IloveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Maryland #Nature in #America #ConowingoDam #Conowingo #BaldEagles #Eagles #DrDADBooks #Canon #Bringit #Photography #Picoftheday #Photoftheday
