A snowy owl takes to the air, staring at me as if I might be its next meal. It was one of those rare occasions when the owl actually took off in my direction. Big birds like the snowy will almost always take off into the wind. It was also one of those rare days when the predominant wind was out of the east, making the occurrence possible. These magnificent visitors from the north grace our shores irregularly during the winter season. Their appearance brings out scores of visitors, from birders to photographers. They, like many raptors, enjoy their privacy.
