Made Explore.

A week or so ago Gracie was here and I went inside for a minute when I came back outside she told me she saw a fox run into the woods. She said she noticed it because the birds were creating a ruckus.

I saw "the" fox this morning as I was sitting at the kitchen bar. She was only here for a moment and I grabbed my camera and got some shots...difficult light and dirty windows. ;)

This spring there has been a lot of visitors to our bird feeders but since it became hot it has slowed down...except at night when the raccoons bring their youngsters to the feeders. I have had to bring them in at night because they will come up missing. There is a very nice anti-squirrel bird birdfeeder out there somewhere and I hope to find it this fall. :)

The male Peregrine is bringing one of the juveniles food. The adult will drop the food and the juvenile will catch it and eat it.

I've wanted to get the Peregrines feeding their young in the air for some time. You just have to be at the right place at the right time.

I've been shooting them for weeks and have always missed the transfer of food. Fortunately, I was there at the right time this time.

More shots in this series will be coming in the next few days.

Happy Monochrome Monday!

Graham Ibbeson's statue of Eric Morecambe on the promenade of Morecambe. John Eric Bartholomew was born in Morecambe in 1926, and adopted the stage name of Morcambe after establishing the comedy partnership with Ernie Wise. The statue features the comedian's "Bring Me Sunshine" pose and portrays him with binoculars and dressed for a spot of birdwatching, something Eric Morecambe did frequently.

The singular most impressive and dramatic waterfall I've had to pleasure to see, Gullfoss in South West Iceland. The sheer power of this falls is hard to take in, you can hear it a long time before you actually see it, definitely a 'wow' moment when it does come into view, something like 140 cubic meters per second falls down into the crevice below!

We were really lucky with the weather here as it had been raining off and on that morning and heavy cloud, luckily it held off here and had some nice golden light, along with the rainbow which appeared and the disappeared again, the one big bonus of these falls opposed to the others we visited on the trip is that there is hardly any spray to contend with as you are a lot higher up allowing me to use filters without wiping the lens every few seconds, a polarizer was just about impossible anywhere else but ideal here with the sun in the right place at this time of day allowing a much more pleasing exposure time.

I wasn't sure if this photo worked but thought I would add it at the last minute, I sort of like it.

Location: Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse, Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Caption: If you want character, history, and storytelling, this lighthouse has it all. The views are a bonus! Many of the lighthouse keepers’ children were born in the living room, which served as a refuge for shipwrecked sailors housed and cared for by the lighthouse keeper’s family. In particular I was surprised to see a WW2 German U Boat that was photographed from the lighthouse. At the time, U Boats were sinking allied ships along the eastern seaboard. Some of the character, community survival skills, and practical wisdom is evident in this excerpt from earlier times before the lighthouse was built:

Quotation: 1889, G.C. Fearn, the member of the legislative assembly for the district that included Lobster Cove, reported, "Each inhabitant of Rocky Harbour contributed a pint of oil each week to help fuel a light kept by a local fisherman in his own home. Fearn's constituents felt they merited a stronger light provided by the government, and one resident even volunteered to keep it. "A stately old dame," Fearn wrote, "has offered to keep the lighthouse (when erected) free of salary and, said she, 'You may be sure, it will always be burning, for I have my three boys on the banks.' "

Over the past month or so, I've been watching this juvenile Commerson's frogfish which stays on the same coral head. It's grown quite a bit but hasn't changed into its camouflage coloration yet.

Bring back the old Flickr. It was much easier to use.

First, my apologies for bringing up a political subject in a forum that some feel should be devoid of political opinion.

I spent today reflecting on the merits of public lands in the U.S., and the potential outcome of turning over Federal lands to the states, and subsequent sales of those lands to private individuals and companies. The possibility of this transfer is more realistic today with the recent bill passed by the House, making it easier to transfer Federal land to the states, and the inauguration of Donald Trump.

The view in this photo is on Federal land, but is within 1/4 mile of evaporite ponds that cover a significant area near Moab Utah (earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=83905&eocn...). The ponds are used to concentrate potash, a potassium bearing mineral used largely in fertilizer. (BTW my father was one of the chemical engineers who consulted in the construction of this plant in the early 1960's, so my early well being is tied in small part to its existence)

Clearly the current use of this land has merits in enhancing food supply for humans. However this area is also heavily used for recreation. It is conceivable that this area would be used to enhance the production of the potash mine, and become one of the next evaporite ponds., which are already quite visible from Dead Horse Point, the high point on the mesa in the center of the skyline. Access to this scenic area and the White Rim road may also cease. It would enhance the profits of the company that operates this mine, and may increase the supply of potash, of which the U.S. produces about 2% of the world's production. It would also seriously compromise the aesthetic value of the area. Is the loss of public access to this land, and the loss of tourist money worth the benefits to greater potash production? This is only a hypothetical possibility- as far as I know there is no plan for increased use of the area for evaporite ponds, but it provides a reasonable scenario, given the sentiment in the Utah state government.

My hope is that those in power will properly weigh the pros and cons of use of Federal lands, and the potential for transferring those lands to the states. Let's keep public lands public. Let's also remember people need to make a living. The two are not antithetical.

Photographic note: this is a 3 photo stack to enhance the sharpness throughout.

plenty of worms for the blackbirds today

Only through extreme (some would say over the top) processing could I bring out the sunrays in the sky, which to me was necessary to create the fairy tale like atmosphere of the place and the moment. The field is sloping slightly up to the right which may deceive you into thinking that the horizon is not straight.

HAPPY VALENTINES ! Love is like a garden. It requires attention, tender care and cultivation. Remind your partner in a special way how important, valued and loved he or she is to you this coming Valentines Day! You will have some shared cherished memories when you do.

Hope this brings a smile to your face as it did mine! my youngest has an obsession with whipped cream. When I want him to sit still I take out that coveted whipped cream and then I have approximately 5 minutes max before it's gone to snap the pictures I want. He is SO active that trying to get him to sit for a portrait is darn near impossible. It's adorable that something as simple as whipped cream captures his attention. We don't eat sweets a lot so this is a treat of treats in his eyes! ;) I think we should all have a simple treasured treat that is magical yet attainable. Sometimes its the smallest things that you really have to focus on to realize how magical they really are. When I am having a dark moment or day or even season, I love going back over pictures of treasured moments and smiles - on my computer and in my mind! Sending love and warmest wishes to you for a magical and wonderful week. xxoo Rachel

This ewe was really soaking up the sun!

Iona - Scotland - May 2010

apparently these shower roses were not what she meant :)

Spring in Boulder brings the heaviest snows. From April 15-17 fourteen inches accumulated in my yard (it was melting as it accumulated), over 30 in Nederland and Ward, and over 40 inches in the northern ski areas.

So I went outside to take pictures and get some nice Vitamin D to fight this stupid cold and the Jerks that live behind us are burning their leaves and the smoke is coming right into our yard :( Sucks so much they can do that here.

So this was it, One miserable picture ;) I can't bring myself to change her out of this awesome outfit, it just suits her so much <3

Happy Sunday Guys!
