On 14th Oct 2018, 10000 Hong Kong protesters hold a rally from Causeway Bay to the Central Office, to protest the government 's plan to spend probably 1 trillion Hong Kong dollars to build artificial islands and accompanying bridges and tunnels in the East of Lantau Island.
The former "East Lantau Metropolis project" proposed to reclaim 1000 hectares , has been replaced this week by an even more ambitious project of "Lantau Tomorrow Vision " of reclaiming 1700 hectares to house 1.1million people by the Chief Executive Carrie Lam, preempting the awaited public consultation report by the Task Force on Land Supply.
The protestors worried the project has not considered the risks under extreme weather, will irreversibly damage the environment, burn up the whole fiscal reserve, and deprive the public of the funding for other more important fields like medical , education, and retirement scheme.
Moreover the project , requiring 2 to 3 decades to complete , cannot cater for the immediate housing needs of the general public, as compared to other source of land supply such as the Fanling Golf Course , brownfield sites and buy back farmland from private estate developers for public housing.

The West Jefferson Avenue – Rouge River Bridge is a bridge located where Jefferson Avenue crosses the Rouge River at the border of Detroit and River Rouge, Michigan (1922). It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Bridgetender houses are original. Portions of old cable car fixtures remain, today used as lampposts.
or St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel (German: Alter Elbtunnel (coll.) or St. Pauli Elbtunnel (official name)) which opened in 1911, is a pedestrian and vehicle tunnel in Hamburg, Germany. The 426 m (1,398 ft) long tunnel was a technical sensation; 24 m (80 ft) beneath the surface, two tubes with 6 m (20 ft) diameter connect central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river Elbe. This meant a big improvement for tens of thousands of workers in one of the busiest harbours in the world.
Four huge lifts on either side of the tunnel carried pedestrians, carriages and motor vehicles to the bottom. They are still in operation, though due to the limited capacity by today's standards, other bridges and tunnels have been built and taken over most of the traffic.
In 2008 approx 300.000 cars, 63.000 bicycles and 700.000 pedestrians used the tunnel. The tunnel is opened 24 hours for pedestrians and bicycles. For motorized vehicles opening times are currently Monday to Friday from 5.20 AM to 8.00 PM, on Saturdays from 5.20 AM to 4.00 PM.

I was asked today to join a group called "BRIDGES AND TUNNELS" and help compile a list of the "100 BEST BRIDGES TO SEE BEFORE YOU DIE." So i trawled through all my photos and have come up with 8 pictures. This one is of one of the bridges over the Yarra River in Melbourne Australia. The photo was taken at dusk just as the buildings were starting to be lit up. The Building in the left foreground is Flinders Street Railway station and its Indian Temple style contrasts with the modern office blocks to its rear. Along this stretch of the Yarra River there are bridges nearly every 100 metres and no two are alike which makes for a spectacular view be it as you walk along the banks of the river or as you glide under them on one of the many boat trips that are run along it to Williamstown or down past the MCG and the Rod Laver Arena home of the Australian Tennis Open.
The Norwegians are a tunnel building (burrowing) nation. The 57 road has several tunnels being built along it. The Nishamartunnelen at 1.8Km long is more special than most, not because of the length but because of the roundabout in the tunnel. One part of the road continues onto the south side of the fjord, the other exits across this bridge before going into another tunnel. In my book that is pretty damn neat.

A shot from the impressive model railroad set up currently in Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha. All the buildings, bridges and tunnels (etc.) are building of natural wood, with bark still attached, giving this an odd "naturalistic" feel mixed with the technology of the trains. It's a very strange addition to the Gardens, but interesting nevertheless.

URBAN ART MURALISM - ARTIST EXCHANGE in AMSTERDAM
A group of 36 Urban Artists coming from six European countries – Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Italy, France and Austria – took part in the European Art Exchange Project “SH(OUT)!!!” from 18.03.11 to 27.03.11 in Amsterdam.
The main activities included several mural paintings in the city of Amsterdam, an exhibition in the Dokhuis Gallery as well as a common art workshop with local young people.
Nowadays Urban Art has worldwide acceptance as a young art form. Urban Artists form and transform public spaces and present their work, free of charge, throughout the cities. The event gives respect and pays tribute to art from the streets and makes this art form more accessible to a broader audience through various live painting activities in the city, two innovative group exhibitions and workshops.

A footbridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal, dated 1800, designed by John Rennie, engineer, and manufactured by the Coalbrookdale factory at Ironbridge. MATERIALS: The structure is of cast iron, set on ashlar abutments. PLAN: The bridge is a single span measuring c.10m, with a width of c. 3.5m EXTERIOR: The bridge consists of four segmental arches which have cornices above pierced circles diminishing in size towards the centre of each intrados. At the centre of each intrados is a moulded cast iron date plaque inscribed 'ERECTED / ANNO / 1800'. The delicate cast iron balustrade above is formed from three rows, in vertical rectangles to the base with larger panels with diagonal crosses above. The raised handrail, which was added in the late C20, steps out slightly from the middle section. The abutments, which are wider than the bridge, have blocking courses, cornices and guttae friezes. HISTORY: Sydney Gardens were laid out as commercial pleasure grounds between 1792 and 1794; the initial design was by the architect Thomas Baldwin, who, after he went bankrupt, was replaced by Charles Harcourt Masters in 1794. They were opened on 11 May 1795 as Sydney Gardens Vauxhall, and rapidly became a popular place of entertainment, hosting public breakfasts, promenades and galas. The main building was the Sydney Tavern (now the Holburne of Menstrie Museum), which stood at the western end of the central walk, and housed tea and card rooms, a ballroom, coffee room and a public house. In 1799, a section of the Kennet and Avon Canal (authorised 1794; opened 1810) was cut through the gardens, with the addition of decorative bridges and tunnels, which added to the picturesque appeal of the pleasure grounds; these were insisted upon by the proprietors of Sydney Gardens as part of their agreement with the canal company, which was entered into in 1795. The canal company paid £2,100 and the cost of providing the bridges and tunnels as compensation for the intrusion into the gardens. During the early C19, additional features and structures were introduced, adding variety and surprise in accordance with landscape design principles of the period. From c.1839, a section of the Great Western Railway was constructed, cutting through the gardens. Later in the C19, further ornamental structures were introduced, but these were largely cleared away after World War Two. In 1891, when the original 99-year lease of the Gardens expired, the entire site, including the Tavern, by then in use as a college, was sold, with the intention of replacing the former Tavern with a large hotel, and remodelling the grounds. The plan was abandoned and in 1908, the site was purchased by Bath City Council; the gardens were opened to the public as a municipal park in 1913, while the Tavern was remodelled by Sir Reginald Blomfield into the Holburne of Menstrie Museum. The gardens remain in use as a public park. This bridge, which provides a pedestrian crossing over the Kennet and Avon canal, was constructed in 1800 and remains largely unaltered since then. Through 25 joint enforcement operations focusing on ghost plates and persistent toll violators on bridges and in tunnels throughout New York City, MTA Bridge and Tunnel officers, NYPD officers and local law enforcement partners have impounded 1,540 vehicles, made 339 arrests and issued 12,007 summonses. These drivers owe more than $12.5 million in unpaid tolls and fees.

The New York Transit Museum is a museum which displays historical artifacts of the New York City Subway, bus, commuter rail, and bridge and tunnel systems; it is located in a decommissioned Court Street subway station in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of New York City.
On the platform (lower) level, two working subway tracks contain many historic examples of New York City Subway and Elevated railway equipment as a permanent display. Preserved subway cars date as far back as the predecessor companies that came before the New York City Transit Authority, such as the BMT and IRT private companies and the city owned and operated IND.

July 11 Marks the anniversary of the Triborough Bridge's opening in 1936. Spanning the Harlem River, the Bronx Kill and the Hell Gate, its 3 main bridges connect Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx.
This is part of a film celebrating the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority's 30th anniversary in 1964. The full video is the property of the MTA Bridges and Tunnels-Special Archives and has been edited by the La Guardia and Wagner Archives.
One of the wonders of Antiquity, this superb aqueduct was built in 19 B.C. It formed part of a water supply system with a total length of 30 miles, stretching from its source near Uzes via a whole series of cuttings, trenches, bridges and tunnels to supply the growing Roman city of Nimes with up to 750,000 ft3 of fresh water every day.
Amazingly, all the stones were put in place without mortar, through the careful calculation of the dimensions of the huge blocks of stone (some of them weighing more than 6 tons).

It was early in the morning (7:50am) so the shadows were long as the sun was low in the sky. If you look carefully where the shadow of the second bridge support meets the shadow of the road you will see the shadow of the coach in which we travelled. I doubt I have ever travelled anywhere that has as many bridges and tunnels as on this road. One is either on a bridge or in a tunnel. We only travelled on normal roads once we reached our destinations in the Rivieras. The main link roads seemed to be either tunnels or bridges! I totally loved it.

THE GOBBINS
Finally gotten round to my summer holiday in Northern Ireland photographs.
This set are from the Gobbins coastal path in the north east near Ballycarry. It is spectacular.
Made possible by the efforts of the Irish civil engineer Berkeley Dean Wise who in 1902 began his vision to bring tourism to the area. It was an instant success. With its path hugging the cliff face, suspension bridges and tunnels it is still a marvel today. It was thanks to the local council who after many years in a ruinous state and closed, decided to restore the walk to its former glory. It was reopened in 2016 and is as much a success as it was in its heyday. With funding and exciting plans to extend the walkway it looks like this breath-taking cliff walk has a great future.. GO VISIT.
Officers gathered at the King Fook Funeral Home on Fort Hamilton Parkway in Brooklyn to mourn the passing of MTA Bridges and Tunnels Officer Thomas Choi, who was struck by a motorist while performing his duties at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Oct. 20, 2013. He succumbed to his injuries without ever regaining consciousness on Dec. 29, 2014. Officer Choi is the first MTA Bridges and Tunnels Officer to die in the line of duty in the history of the agency.

Marillion - Afraid of Sunrise
Dressed in black, no turning back
We blanked out on the Great White Way
Fingers in desire's crack
We'd bridge and tunnel into day
Abandoned to the salt of skin
Abandoned to the highway
Sand running in the hourglass
Heat of leather and mirages
So how do we now come to be afraid of sunlight
So how do we now come to be afraid of sunlight
Day-Glo Jesus on the dash
Scorch marks on the road ahead
Friendly fire in hostile waters
Keep the faith, don't lose your head
Don't lose your head
So how do we now come to be afraid of sunlight
Afraid of Sunlight
Agave flower
Sleep beside me
Driving on
Nevada's burning
Phoenix rising
Driving on
To sunlight
Day-Glo Jesus on the dash
Scorch marks on the road ahead
Friendly fire in hostile waters
Keep the faith, don't lose your head
Don't lose your head
So how do we now come to be afraid of sunlight
How do we now come to be afraid
Afraid of sunlight
The last section of I-70 built. The delay was because of the controversy over whether they could build a freeway through this beautiful canyon without destroying it. US HIghway 6 had always gone through here, but it was a simple two lane road that easily and gently hugged the edge of the Colorado River.
As you can see, they did a fabulous job with the freeway. They were generous with bridges and tunnels so as to not disturb much of the natural terrain. I am most grateful that this canyon remains accessible to the masses as they drive across the state and the country.
Thanks, Colorado Division of Highways.

The Ivy is the grande dame of London’s theatreland restaurants and, like many a grande dame, has a highly developed sense of noblesse oblige. All you first-timers, WAGs and bridge-and-tunnellers are welcome here too – just don’t gawp at the richer and more famous. Be cool is the rule. The real point is that this is simply a very good restaurant of its class, ineffably discreet, with good food and wine at reasonable prices.

While the tunnel sign is normal, you notice that for the bridge, you have to take Vernor. That's because the Ramps that go directly to the bridge are still under construction and won't be open until November.
