On 14th Oct 2018, 10000 Hong Kong protesters hold a rally from Causeway Bay to the Central Office, to protest the government 's plan to spend probably 1 trillion Hong Kong dollars to build artificial islands and accompanying bridges and tunnels in the East of Lantau Island.
The former "East Lantau Metropolis project" proposed to reclaim 1000 hectares , has been replaced this week by an even more ambitious project of "Lantau Tomorrow Vision " of reclaiming 1700 hectares to house 1.1million people by the Chief Executive Carrie Lam, preempting the awaited public consultation report by the Task Force on Land Supply.
The protestors worried the project has not considered the risks under extreme weather, will irreversibly damage the environment, burn up the whole fiscal reserve, and deprive the public of the funding for other more important fields like medical , education, and retirement scheme.
Moreover the project , requiring 2 to 3 decades to complete , cannot cater for the immediate housing needs of the general public, as compared to other source of land supply such as the Fanling Golf Course , brownfield sites and buy back farmland from private estate developers for public housing.

The Bridges and Tunnels leaving the peninsula were all blocked by accidents, keeping my friend Bill from getting home, so he stopped by for a visit. Frank loved being with him.
Traveling the length of the Delmarva Peninsula this photograph was shot preparing to cross Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel. My journey was taking me to the Outer Banks in North Carolina for Thanksgiving Holiday with my family.
Approaching the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel from the east and heading west. I stopped to admire the setting sun and the color it painted the evening sky that late fall afternoon.

The Trans-Canada Highway cuts through Banff National Park. To discourage animals from entering the busy road, extensive wildlife fencing on either side of the highway was installed. The overpasses are covered in vegetation that helps them resemble the surrounding habitat.
In the past two decades, the fences, tunnels and overpasses along the Trans-Canada Highway in Banff National Park have helped at least 11 species of large animals (including deer, elk, coyotes, wolves, black bears, cougars and grizzly bears) and more than 152,000 animals cross the road safely. They have also reduced the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions by about 80 per cent, and fewer animals being killed. The concern that channeling wildlife into a few bridges and tunnels may enable predators get an easy meal has been proven not the case.

or St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel (German: Alter Elbtunnel (coll.) or St. Pauli Elbtunnel (official name)) which opened in 1911, is a pedestrian and vehicle tunnel in Hamburg, Germany. The 426 m (1,398 ft) long tunnel was a technical sensation; 24 m (80 ft) beneath the surface, two tubes with 6 m (20 ft) diameter connect central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river Elbe. This meant a big improvement for tens of thousands of workers in one of the busiest harbours in the world.
Four huge lifts on either side of the tunnel carried pedestrians, carriages and motor vehicles to the bottom. They are still in operation, though due to the limited capacity by today's standards, other bridges and tunnels have been built and taken over most of the traffic.
In 2008 approx 300.000 cars, 63.000 bicycles and 700.000 pedestrians used the tunnel. The tunnel is opened 24 hours for pedestrians and bicycles. For motorized vehicles opening times are currently Monday to Friday from 5.20 AM to 8.00 PM, on Saturdays from 5.20 AM to 4.00 PM.

The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge consists of a series of bridges and tunnels that connect Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai, three major cities on the Pearl River Delta in China.
The Norwegians are a tunnel building (burrowing) nation. The 57 road has several tunnels being built along it. The Nishamartunnelen at 1.8Km long is more special than most, not because of the length but because of the roundabout in the tunnel. One part of the road continues onto the south side of the fjord, the other exits across this bridge before going into another tunnel. In my book that is pretty damn neat.

A shot from the impressive model railroad set up currently in Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha. All the buildings, bridges and tunnels (etc.) are building of natural wood, with bark still attached, giving this an odd "naturalistic" feel mixed with the technology of the trains. It's a very strange addition to the Gardens, but interesting nevertheless.

A footbridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal, dated 1800, designed by John Rennie, engineer, and manufactured by the Coalbrookdale factory at Ironbridge. MATERIALS: The structure is of cast iron, set on ashlar abutments. PLAN: The bridge is a single span measuring c.10m, with a width of c. 3.5m EXTERIOR: The bridge consists of four segmental arches which have cornices above pierced circles diminishing in size towards the centre of each intrados. At the centre of each intrados is a moulded cast iron date plaque inscribed 'ERECTED / ANNO / 1800'. The delicate cast iron balustrade above is formed from three rows, in vertical rectangles to the base with larger panels with diagonal crosses above. The raised handrail, which was added in the late C20, steps out slightly from the middle section. The abutments, which are wider than the bridge, have blocking courses, cornices and guttae friezes. HISTORY: Sydney Gardens were laid out as commercial pleasure grounds between 1792 and 1794; the initial design was by the architect Thomas Baldwin, who, after he went bankrupt, was replaced by Charles Harcourt Masters in 1794. They were opened on 11 May 1795 as Sydney Gardens Vauxhall, and rapidly became a popular place of entertainment, hosting public breakfasts, promenades and galas. The main building was the Sydney Tavern (now the Holburne of Menstrie Museum), which stood at the western end of the central walk, and housed tea and card rooms, a ballroom, coffee room and a public house. In 1799, a section of the Kennet and Avon Canal (authorised 1794; opened 1810) was cut through the gardens, with the addition of decorative bridges and tunnels, which added to the picturesque appeal of the pleasure grounds; these were insisted upon by the proprietors of Sydney Gardens as part of their agreement with the canal company, which was entered into in 1795. The canal company paid £2,100 and the cost of providing the bridges and tunnels as compensation for the intrusion into the gardens. During the early C19, additional features and structures were introduced, adding variety and surprise in accordance with landscape design principles of the period. From c.1839, a section of the Great Western Railway was constructed, cutting through the gardens. Later in the C19, further ornamental structures were introduced, but these were largely cleared away after World War Two. In 1891, when the original 99-year lease of the Gardens expired, the entire site, including the Tavern, by then in use as a college, was sold, with the intention of replacing the former Tavern with a large hotel, and remodelling the grounds. The plan was abandoned and in 1908, the site was purchased by Bath City Council; the gardens were opened to the public as a municipal park in 1913, while the Tavern was remodelled by Sir Reginald Blomfield into the Holburne of Menstrie Museum. The gardens remain in use as a public park. This bridge, which provides a pedestrian crossing over the Kennet and Avon canal, was constructed in 1800 and remains largely unaltered since then. The New York Transit Museum is a museum which displays historical artifacts of the New York City Subway, bus, commuter rail, and bridge and tunnel systems; it is located in a decommissioned Court Street subway station in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of New York City.
On the platform (lower) level, two working subway tracks contain many historic examples of New York City Subway and Elevated railway equipment as a permanent display. Preserved subway cars date as far back as the predecessor companies that came before the New York City Transit Authority, such as the BMT and IRT private companies and the city owned and operated IND.

One of the wonders of Antiquity, this superb aqueduct was built in 19 B.C. It formed part of a water supply system with a total length of 30 miles, stretching from its source near Uzes via a whole series of cuttings, trenches, bridges and tunnels to supply the growing Roman city of Nimes with up to 750,000 ft3 of fresh water every day.
Amazingly, all the stones were put in place without mortar, through the careful calculation of the dimensions of the huge blocks of stone (some of them weighing more than 6 tons).

It was early in the morning (7:50am) so the shadows were long as the sun was low in the sky. If you look carefully where the shadow of the second bridge support meets the shadow of the road you will see the shadow of the coach in which we travelled. I doubt I have ever travelled anywhere that has as many bridges and tunnels as on this road. One is either on a bridge or in a tunnel. We only travelled on normal roads once we reached our destinations in the Rivieras. The main link roads seemed to be either tunnels or bridges! I totally loved it.
THE GOBBINS
Finally gotten round to my summer holiday in Northern Ireland photographs.
This set are from the Gobbins coastal path in the north east near Ballycarry. It is spectacular.
Made possible by the efforts of the Irish civil engineer Berkeley Dean Wise who in 1902 began his vision to bring tourism to the area. It was an instant success. With its path hugging the cliff face, suspension bridges and tunnels it is still a marvel today. It was thanks to the local council who after many years in a ruinous state and closed, decided to restore the walk to its former glory. It was reopened in 2016 and is as much a success as it was in its heyday. With funding and exciting plans to extend the walkway it looks like this breath-taking cliff walk has a great future.. GO VISIT.
